But I do certainly hate the south for consistently voting and supporting homophobic policies, voter suppression, racist policies and all... all of that. I Lived and taught in Appalachia for many years, Vance's stereotypes of a miniscule group of highly uneducated people who have no concept of generational wealth, are some of the most inventive and resourceful folks on the planet. They have to be, since they're systematically stripped of opportunities. Many miners of these areas were, and are, used up without adequate healthcare and benifits, and for generations were victims of the "company store" where their pittance of payment was immediately folded right back into the pockets of unscrupulous corporations. Many were so ill treated that their only hope was to send young boys in to work alongside their fathers. Many if not all, succumbed to respiratory disease and cancers, without benefits of medical care. Along with a for profit healthcare system, many these peoples only recourse, is to turn to readily available prescriptions, which take every shred of dignity they have left.
Corporations, and poor Governance has failed Appalachia, not it's people...

I’m from the Netherlands. When the government closed the mines, they brought new activities to the region. There came a new university, the pension fund of all government workers was moved to that region, and the country’s bureau for statistics. The mines were transformed in a chemical plant.
Healthcare was giving extra resources to work together with other organizations like social work to cope with the problems. And it worked very well.

The Atlantic also has several good articles about him and his reductionist descriptions of Appalachia. Anyone with half a brain can easily see what he’s doing w/that book and it just adds to that ludicrous GOP/MAGA narrative that “poverty occurs because folks are lazy, stupid, addicted or worthless and, as such, they deserve it.”
My sister-in-law was going on and on about what a great book it is and how it clearly depicts how people perpetuate their own misery and remain trapped in situations of their own making. I just wanted to scream.
Vance reminds me of a white Clarence Thomas in that he was afforded chances through several programs; programs meant to help level the playing field and reduce barriers to education and future opportunities. But instead of be grateful and push for an expansion of those programs so that even more might experience those opportunities, he believes he did it all himself; that his superior character opened those doors and his self-determination to pull himself up by his bootstraps gave him the American dream. AND, as such, since he could do it himself, so should others. Thus, he’d handily cut those programs because if people don’t have a safety net, they’ll either destruct (& no longer be society’s problem) or they’ll “shape up and ship right.”
    🤮
Uh, but no. The South has not been left behind from the beginning of the country. That part you got seriously wrong. The South & our founding fathers who enslaved huge populations were tremendously powerful people. And our early laws were written through their paradigm. We still have their idiotic electoral college and House structure only because they could count the enslaved as 3/5 of a person without giving them a voice or rights. When you think that enslaved folks made up 21.5% of the country during the Revolutionary era, that was A LOT of power in the South. Sadly, today makes it way easier to elect like Trump (or JD Vance) when the majority of the population did not elect them.
That’s not to say that there wasn’t a huge power dynamic between wealthy plantation owners and poorer white folks. There was. I guess what I’m saying is that it’s a little more complicated than how you portray it.

It wasn't the government who owned the coal mines, but it is the government that refuses to adequately regulate dirty industries so that people are safe from workplace injury and the environment can still support human life. Republican policies only benefit the extremely wealthy, who believe that they will be insulated from environmental collapse. But they don't seem to understand that they won't have any servants or service-sector labor or for that matter locally grown produce if there is environmental collapse. Furthermore, if they have enough seats in Congress, they plan to slash corporate taxes to the lowest level in 80 years, while raising taxes on working class people. I think it's absolutely critical that people learn what's in Project 2025. It's a free download. and I encourage everyone to download it. There are some really scary things in there. Remember the devastation that was caused in 2007-8 with the Great Recession because of deregulating banks? They plan to slash banking regulations, and to totally eliminate the government insurance that protects all of our bank accounts. There are so many things in there that are a thumb in the eye, or worse, to poor/working people that it's mind boggling. The plan includes eliminating Pell grants, which help really poor people be able to go to college. They also plan to get rid of payment plans that let people set their repayment schedule based on their income. That means people with student loans could instantly find their monthly payments tripled.

I agree with her to some degree, except for the fact that Southeast and very Southern Ohio are Appalachian. They were coal mining regions of the same or very similar culture. Also, I feel like she's downplaying real issues with the South. One of my grandmothers on my black side refused to live south of the Mason Dixon line because of the terrifying Klan racism she experienced when she went down there from the north to work. As Dave Chappelle put it, Southern racism is just [insert connoisseur kiss]. It may not seem so bad to her now in 2024 because race relations have improved over 50-60 years little by little, especially in metropolitan areas or areas with a lot of non-Southern transplants, e.g. Atlanta, GA, Huntsville, AL, beach areas on the Gulf Coast, or areas around military bases. But there were high schools still having segregated proms as recently as a couple of years ago.
Also, Appalachia and The South are different regions with different cultures. For example, West Virginia (Appalachia) split from Virginia (The South) over the slavery issue, something that West Virginia should really be quite proud of in my opinion.
    That said, Vance is terrible.

An educated liberal from anywhere never blames an individual for the challenges they face. And reading books or seeing movies about those challenges is about trying to find ways to change society so that people won't have such a hard time just living. Liberals are also called 'bleeding hearts' because they can't help but feel the pain of every person who's having a hard time, and they have a compulsion to know about the pain so that they don't ever forget the people they're fighting for. The reason most liberals are on antidepressants doesn't have to do with their own lives, but their frustration with society keeping others down, and their own helplessness to effect change which will help everyone.

That's not even mentioning the fact that you're complaining about being stereotyped based on your liberal political alignment which is something you have a lot more control over than where you live and how you speak.
You freely admit to being educated and are therefore presumably middle to upper class, so no- your life won't be affected by negative stereotypes about "northern liberals" will it? Not in the same way as poor southerners who face employment discrimination amongst other things.
Your class based privilege and discrete political alignment are perfectly valid points to highlight when critiquing your condescending and hostile attitudes towards working class southerners. Especially your political ideology, liberalism laid the foundation for neo-liberalism which is the economic theory and practice which ruined the lives of countless southerners and put scores of Americans out of a job and into the poorhouse, I can't blame any southerner for having a bad impression of liberals.

That is, factually, simply repeating the prejudice one is criticizing, and ot is also blatantly untrue. Reading a few comments here, what astonishes me most is the fact that both the author of the video and some other people are accusing all liberals of being privileged by having an education, while completely ignoring the fact that these same liberals have been advocating for and voting for equal chances and better education for ALL for ages. However, most of the South is staunchly supporting republican politicians, who have been systematically destroying the US public education system. So if one is hating on the educated as being privileged while simultaneously refusing their attempts for equality and voting against one's own chances of education, then what are we even talking about here? Apart from nonsensically equating liberals with the current republican VP nominee, which is completely ludicrous, why are those who are attacking the educated also voting for the policies which keep them uneducated? But other people do have the right to run for office themselves (despite the difficulties that entails). And again, Republicans pander to the dominant culture in rural areas anyway. It's not like a social democrat would get elected if they'd only run for office. And even American liberals in metro areas typically don't vote responsibly (they're just typically less irresponsible people in rural areas typicallyare). Voters need city, county, state and federal officials that have their best interests in mind ALWAYS. It doesn’t help folks in GOP dominated states that President Biden has passed a bill with plenty of funding to get internet to rural America or President Obama passed a bill that changed healthcare in our country if GOP governors and congresses refuse to accept the federal money to help the people in their states.
