  • Have you already achieved the comfortable fluency level in your language? Congratulations! Wanna know what next? The best thing is about to start! If you have achieved the level in your foreign language where you are comfortable using it, communicating with people, listening and reading without any greater problems, the best thing is about to start! 😉 Now you can actually start using the language to learn new stuff and new information using the language as a tool. This is one of the reasons why I love learning languages.
    So if you want to further improve your language skills, and maybe also get to a C1 level, I suggest that you start using the language to learn new stuff with online courses. For example, Udemy has a lot of them for free on every topic possible. And many universities also create open courses for the public. In this way, you can use the language to get new information about something that interests you, and also to learn the language itself - if you start working with the language with a specific topic, you'll learn new vocabulary connected to that particular topic. Don't forget to process and learn those new phrases with a vocabulary-learning method (e.g. Goldlist or Anki) so you get them into your active vocabulary.

    In my experience to go from B2 to C1 was hard, I mean, It took me a lot of effort. There is a point in which the only way to get to C1 is to enjoy practicing this language. So, I needed to be inmerse, reading, listening and writing in english. I should say that my path started when I needed to prepare for an international english exam (IELTS academic/TOEFL). Others may find other motivations, but it's undeniable that all will turn easier if you enjoy studying and discovering new words, phrases, etc.

    • @marioalll
      @marioalll 2 роки тому +10

      @@strangerperson7177 it depends; some people only need 6 months, others need 1 year, others need 2 years; so it depends on your current level. If your current level is basic, you will need 2 years in average and studying consistently, being inmerse in english. That's why I mentioned the fact that one needs to enjoy learning english since that will make it easier.

    I came across this video about a year ago because I had reached plateau at B2 level and couldn't break through it for a long time and in a nutshell all I did was what you described in the video , nothing more nothing less. Reading books in English , listening to tv series , Podcasts and UA-cam videos as much as possible and an unwavering patience and only then you'll break through the intermediate plateau and in my opinion , past C1 level is all about enjoying the language and mantaining patience for a very long time. Great video.

    thank you so much for the video Lydia! it was the first video of your channel that I watched and I absolutely loved it! To be honest, I am stuck in the B2 level. I need to do a proficiency test this weekend and my goal is to achieve the C1 level, so I am trying immerse myself in the language as much I can. I learned english by my own when I was fifteen, consequently the parts that I believe that I am better is in the listening and reading parts (the passive one's), in the other hand, my speaking and writing is not that good because I never had someone to practice with me. In the past months I started to have calls in english with a friend and it is helping me a lot! Nowadays, I feel that I am more confidence with my speaking and writing skills. Every day I have the goal to write and speak (with myself) at least one hour, which is helping me also. To conclude, what I mean is that you absolutely right! The best way to reach the C1 level is including the language in your daily life and turn it as a routine.

    One of my goals for French is to take MOOC's in it. There are a lot of them offered every year. Université Laval in Canada has a few that look interesting that they repeat every year, such as > and >. EdX has a course by Amnesty International called > which is offered year-round. There are a lot of MOOCs in French (but many teach computer programming). I think, though, that I might use these courses to maintain my C1 rather than attain it. But there's a lot of other non-fiction I can read and listen to which will help me reach C1.

She sent to me some music from the Czech republic and Slovakia.I used to listen 1984 song Stuzkova by slovak band Elan.I also had some booklets from your your university: Comenius University. The best way to find new words is watching travel-vloggers because, firstly, the travel-vlogger and the person he is speaking to use the vocab that is used on the regular basis. There are lots of such words as parole, for instance, that are used daily. I think it's better to memorize those words then try to explain them. At B2 people, certainly, can explain them, however, I expressed my opinion. Secondly, as Metatron's Academy said: it is hard to understand natives, but the even harder task is understanding conversations between natives. Watching Peter Santenello (I take English into account, you can pick any vlogger in any language) will not only improve your vocab and knowing idioms and stuff, but also will it put you in a sort of simulation of the real life because of noises on the background.

    Use other language to study something is how I learn English as my second language at College/Uni. We are 'forced' to master the language to do well in our study.
    And now, I'm studying Korean using English for personel growth :-) Not that difficult because I love to watch Running Man and Law of the Jungle. Also I enjoy the Korean songs sings by Kim Joong Kook, Haha and others. That way I can immerse myself everyday in Korean. The difficult part is the Grammar which I am currently dive into.

      I'm currently studying using this website, howtostudykorean.com
      It focused primarily on Grammar at the very beginning. Just precisely what I want because I prefer to 'understand' how the language works first. Not just know 'pre-scripted phrases'.
      I subscribed to free 'koreanclass101' course and UA-cam to 'know' some phrases or to get a different explanation on the same topic that I've studied. It really help my understanding and also I don't feel bored.
      But I don't really use other resources.
      I also bought a book called Complete Korean from TeachYourSelf for the purpose of learning Korean while not Online or when I want to stay away from monitor/mobile phone.
      I actually want to buy the 'Korean Made Easy' book by Go! Billy Korean. But It's not available in my country. I can buy it online but I just don't want to wait.
      My main Korean Study Course that I follow is from howtostudykorean.com. The 'koreanclass101' & 'Complete Korean' books are only supplementary. And of course, watching Running Man and Law of the Jungle every week and listen Korean songs everyday to get the 'Korean environment'. :-D

      The general rule is that it takes as much time to get from B2 to C1 as it took you to get from A0 to B2. I personally don't aim for C1 in most of my languages because I don't need such a high level. To me, B2 means that I feel comfortable speaking the language and I can use it whenever I want. That's my goal when I take up a new language - to be able to talk to the locals when I travel to the country where it's spoken.

    • @Michelle-go4io

      @@Languagementoring That is a tricky answer for me because I first learned a similar language to the current endeavour at school and through passive exposure over many years up to an intermediate level. So getting to B1 was "basically cheating" and in getting to B2 I have had a nice head start. However, getting to C1 is going to be essential professionally. I have a working strategy, but I like to look out for tips and encouragement to keep me plodding along. Thanks for your work. You are an ispiration.

      Hi, thank you for reaching out to us. Firstly, it's great that you're immersing yourself in English through various mediums like podcasts, movies, and UA-cam videos! It's important to expose yourself to the language as much as possible. However, it's also important to practice actively using the language, such as writing and speaking.
      One effective method is to find a language exchange partner, someone who is fluent in English and wants to learn your native language. This way, you can practice both speaking and writing with a native speaker who can provide feedback on your mistakes.
      For a more structured approach, you may want to consider checking out our video courses for self-directed learners. Our courses incorporate fun, effective methods and system, covering various topics including writing and speaking.
      It's important to not be too hard on yourself and to celebrate small successes along the way. Remember, language learning is a journey and it takes time and effort to improve. Don't give up, keep practicing, and you'll get there! (Daša from Language mentoring)

    I actually understand you all but do i really need to get classes to go to c1 from b2 without any course pursued just by reading listening and trying by my own

      Hi, a lot of exposure is needed to get from B2 to C1. Grammar is covered at B2 level and then it's mostly about collocations, vocabulary structures, etc. That's why working with the real language in context is so useful. Language courses can be beneficial too, of course! A combination of both could work really well :)

    How long from b1 to b2?

    • @Languagementoring
      @Languagementoring  3 роки тому +2

      Hi there, the step from B1 to B2 is basically double compared to how much time it took us to get from A2 to B1. The biggest challenge at this level is grammar that needs to get much more attention than at the previous levels. In general, Lydia says it’s possible to learn a language (from A0 to B2) in two years if we study for about an hour every day using effective methods. Hope this helps!

      @@Languagementoring Actually, I got from A0 to B2 in two years. But now, it is difficult to be able to get C1. I dunno what to do. And how much time does it take?

      @@Jefferson-ci5dv Hi, count with double the amount of time you spent reaching the previous level. It can differ based on the time and effort we put into it, of course.

      Hi Richard, thank you for your question. Lydia is Slovak. The language levels mentioned in the video are according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (abbreviated as CEFR). It's a guideline used to describe the achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and in other countries. (Daša from Language mentoring)

    I'm going to help a lot of people by explaining my experience:
    I didn't even knew what meant "walls"... I played games that were only in English, I knew nothing, I spend a few days (like 3) on free website to learn grammar, I did all exercices in grammar...
    I forgot everything that I had learnt very quickly...
    But I tried to learn most used vocabulary, it was very effective...
    Then I tried some methods to learn English, all failed, I watched youtubers that I liked, and with time;
    I was able to understand nearly 100% of what they said, without subs';
    What happenned then is that I tried to read Harry Potter, what a mistake.
    It was impossible without opening a dictionnary, so I tried songs, and it works well I learnt a lot of vocab' and I felt good enough even watching movies and TV shows, I forgot the grammar, but it feels almost always wrong when something is wrong, so I felt like I don't really need grammar, but I was wrong, so I bought a book about grammar and did half of this book, and now, tests are saying I'm C1...
    I feel like I'm not but English feels easy, but not perfectly undertsandable, obviously with context it is very easy to understand, but I feel I like I lack of vocabulary ... And now I'm lost because it feels to reach the real C1 level that I need to learn an ocean of worlds.... And since I'm confortable speaking and listening English...
    Its even worse I'm not very motivated and I know I can get better by spending time talking with natives....
    I don't know what I should do ... I guess finish the grammar book i'm gonna forget soon... And learn a whole lot of advanced vocabulary + talk with natives

      Hi Maximum, language learning is a journey and one finds out what works but also fails, and that's OK. We recommend being exposed to authentic materials and working with vocabulary and grammar structures encountered there. A book and conversations with native speakers also help, as you say. If you lack motivation, try to remind yourself why you're learning the language and fall in love with it again :) Good luck!

    I'm currently in between a B2 and C1 level. All I'm doing is smashing content focusing on listening and reading, and talking whenever I get the chance. I will commit to undertaking 2 hours a day of immersion, and by the end of the year I hope to reach a C1 level. If I don't reach it by then, I won't beat myself up about it.
