Title: "Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace"ep72-73-1

I love the fact that it rained on her behalf when she walked back. She couldn’t cry over the fact that her husband ignored her in front of everyone. Her only relief is sighing and the rain became her tears. How very appropriate and saddening. You can see how the disillusion began in this clip alone.

That went the exact opposite of how he hoped. She knows both she and the Han princess have been disrespected by his whims and yet he refuses to see it. And she refuses to cosign this abuse of power.
I know right. The actress playing Empress Ruyi is amazing too. She doesn't have to say anything her face is filled with such sadness and emptiness already. Like I feel for her.

I expected to be annoyed with the Empress but the fact that she actually empathized with the Han girl despite her jealousy and even spoke against the Emperor for her is amazing. When the Han Princess, the Emperor and the Empress were on the balcony, I was just waiting for the Han Princess to say something like "His Majesty is very shameful to display affection for another before his wife." And the fact that the Emperor told the Empress it's her job to be kind to his mistresses made my blood boil.
And when the Emperor said "I thought I could tell you this and you would understand," I hoped she'd reply with: "No, you hoped I'd bite my tongue."
@Divya A A good point, but the producers usually make the "current lover" position out to be the villain. Their characters are most often built to be discriminated upon and disliked, so I was prepared to dislike her but was pleasantly surprised.
@Divya A They make the "current lover" dislikeable, in my opinion, so the viewers have an excuse to pair the love interests with one another without feeling bad.
I wouldn't be surprised to find Empress Ruyi has a similar personal experience. You can get that from her conversation with the Emperor.

Also the reason why he excited, with the Empress Ruyi on his heals was because The Hans Princess did not take her life. She now will want to stay.
So, The Empress and Mistresses really had no choice in tbe matter.
Such outspoken dislike would of placed her on the wrong side of his grace.

I also saw a documentary video that stated it was the Empresses job to be a mother figure to her people and her husband's mistresses. The Empress knows first hand it's her duty to treat this girl with warmth, but instead of supporting her husband, she is genuinely concerned for the Han princess. The Emperor is lucky to have married such a remarkable and kind hearted woman. Readily and shamelessly unfaithful partners should be thrown to the curb.

What an Amazing actress the woman who plays The Empress is!
You could feel every despairing emotion she was struggling with as she spoke to the Emperor, and left with in the rain.
This is only the second episode I've watched and I'm totally hooked!
yea the person that plays her is also in a show that recently came out about a girl who lives in an abusive family and the actress that plays Ruyi in this ends up saving the little girl. in that show this actress is amazing she plays the role so so well
From one Elizabeth to another! I watched 3 clips so far and man... I can't tear myself away. But I'll get angry with it sooner or later, my blood is already boiling. She is sooooo amazing though isn't she!? One of the best I have seen in years... Can't remember last time I felt what the actress was feeling just through voice, punctuation and poise. Incredible!

So heartbreaking to watch this episode because this is the time when Ruyi is so heartbroken and her old love is falling apart. She's finally, slowly but a little bit on denial, that no matter how much love she gives to the Emperor, it wasn't enough for his satisfaction. You could see her heart breaking here and I feel so sad for her:( She looks so done with him too.

Every Qing Emperor, starting with Nurhaci (Emperor Tianming), all had multiple wives, concubines, and mistresses. The harem system was all part of the imperial Chinese institution since the beginning, the Qing Dynasty just maintained the harem system.

Rather than "her heart began to shake", more like Princess Xiangjian's finally realising her situation and that her family and tribesmen are at the mercy of the Emperor. And also that her tribesmen will only be treated as such if she stays to serve the emperor. Women of the imperial harem are all pitiful.. At 14:33, there's an ancient chinese saying/rule of "men to put his left leg forward first and female to put her right" but you can see Ruyi no longer cares for the so called "rule", why? Rules are set by the emperor at his wishes and she has //finally// given up on the Emperor (to ever turn back).

He divorced his 3rd wife shortly after the marriage cause he didn't like her looks at all and apparently they never even had sex .But he had good friendly relationship with her after and treated her like a sister. 4th wife was beheaded also because of alleged adultery. And last wife lived longer than him and then married someone else. Actually she was married 4 times. The king was her 3rd husband.

Honestly I didn't come to these clips expecting anything very good; I'm used to cheesy Chinese dramas, and the avalanche in the previous section made me laugh out loud :'D But this is really good ! The acting, the decors, the costumes, even the photography and music: almost nothing feels cheap or tacky. I also love that the Empress isn't the usual petty rival, her poise and grace (and dammmmnn the colour of her voice!) are compelling. I think I'm going to look up this drama and go on a binge next month!
Wow! At 12:19 or so, his whole expression changes to one that Ruyi and we see for the first time. The Emporer looks like a different person in that shot, a stranger. There is no more denying that whatever childhood bond they had has run its course.

The Emperor looked like a crazy man talking to Ruyi about his obsession, like a woman would understand you just want her as a Phuk chick. The hurt on her face makes me want to cry. A very heart broken episode...
The idea of a harem is based on lust and that the desires/lust of the King are more important than anything else. What the Emperor wants, the emperor gets. No sense of the feelings or anyone. The emperor in this series ran the harem based on his lust and thus why everyone got away with everything under the sky; a light punishment and then again, all based on the Emperor and what pleases him. Another aspect of the harem was that of forming alliances with tribes and so on. A tribe or minister would offer their daughter up for marriage as a means to form an alliance with the Emperor so not all of them were women that were desired or chosen. Many of these titles were conferred to women of society and rank and rarely to a maid or simple women.
To be fair, many of his concubines and consorts are from powerful noble families and clans...many of them provide basic necessity for the palace and also helped defend and keep the empire together....so he oftentimes he had to turn a blind eye to the trouble makers.
Do they all have personal helper ladies because of the foot binding the noble women of that era had?
Qing tribe didn't do that. Actually Han people used to bind their daughter's foot. Qing Dynasty forbidde that practice.
