Excellent presentation and some real great info. I went a different route and bought a low mile Japan spec 09 Mazda 2.5. The price difference was only a couple hundred more than a Ford was but it has the right intake on it. Other than relocating the solenoids and swapping the heater hose manifold it looks like a straight bolt in.
When you did engine prime on first crank after rebuild - how long did it take for engine oil warning lamp to go out? Or did you just let it fire and build up pressure at higher RPM then just cranking with spark plugs removed?
Unfortunately that was awhile ago so I'm not sure how I did it exactly but I would say about 15 sec with no spark plugs should be plenty. I don't remember the position of the oil filter off the top of my head but if it's in a position where you can fill it before installing it, do it.
looking at a 2.5 swap when my 2.3 gives out. When this happens I would like to swap the trans to a 6 speed because it would be easier to do it while i have everything out. What are some of the options that I would have?
Any manual that fits the 2.3 or 2.5 would work for the engine. Not sure about the transmission mount though. But if the studs/bolts to the transmission are the same you could just install your trans mount onto the new transmission most likely.
Hey man I really appreciate ur work...I just wish I found u b4 I did this same swap, only I put the 2.5 out of '11 fusion n my 05 tribute. Hi I am in Australia and I am going to do this swap can you use the 2.5 from any Mazda in the same year group I have a Mazda 3 and was wondering if a 2.5 from a cx7 with vvt would be compatible thanks in advance
Other descriptions of this swap say that they had to swap the intake camshaft, but you only talk about camshaft position sensors. Did you leave the Ford camshafts and just change the position sensors on the side? I'm confused why people would change the camshaft if it isn't necessary, as it makes the job a lot more complicated. Did you have to take off the timing cover to replace cam position sensor, or just the sensor that bolts on the outside?
All the sensors bolt to the outside. I did not need to swap the camshaft. The only reason you would have to swap the camshaft would be if the timing wheel on the back of the camshaft that the sensor read was different. In my case I didn't see any differences. I did have to swap the crankshaft balancer as the ckp sensor reads the teeth on the back and there was some difference between the tooth count or spacing.
I'm not sure what the last year you can use is, likely up to they change to DI. But I think 2005 or 2006 is the earliest you can go. I use a 2011 escape motor
I used a 2011 escape motor. I believe you use one up to 2013 maybe 2014. I'm not sure when they switched to DI. But should be able to use 2006-2012 without issue as long as you change the needed parts.
Got a 2.5 Mazda but didn’t know it was swapped out to a 2.0. After buying it. Now realizing the reason why the air on the intake was leaking air is because the intake on right now is for a 2.5. Do I need to replace the throttle body to a 2.0 as well with the intake? To fit right..
What year/model is it? Are you sure its a 2.0 and not a 2.3? 2.0 is a different engine than the 2.3/2.5 so they would be a lot more for someone to change to go from 2.5 to 2.0. Ecu and engine harness would be different on the 2.0. If its a 2.3 in place of a 2.5 you should just need the intake. I don't remember the throttle bodies being different as far as the bolt spacing goes.
Would this apply to a m3 with a 2.0 . I can't do this (disabled) and would need to find someone to do it. Do you think a auto shop would be willing? Where are you located?
Great video on the subject but I've got a question the video didn't answer, I'm wondering if you would need to do any rewiring of the engine wiring harness to fit a 2012 mazda6 2.5 and ECU into an 07 Mazda6? I got offered a dirt cheap 07 hatchback with a trashed 2.3 and was wondering if the later 2.5 engine/ECU/harness would fit without modifying the harness (also BCM compatibilty issues if any)?
Honestly I'm not sure, but I would doubt they would be exactly the same. You can use just the engine like I did and it'll work fine with the 2.3 harness ECU. But this is the only 2.5 swap I've ever done so I never tried to swap harness and ECU as that would mean immobilizer/key programming would be needed to sync the ECU to the car. Unless you swapped ECU and all the immobilizer parts, which would then require figuring out any harness differences between the old and new anti-theft systems. Too much work and unnecessary if you ask me for day to day. If you needed more power you could just tune the 2.3 ECU.
I have an 06 maz6. Blow the motor. Ended up buying a 2.5l from a 2010 mazda 6 with only 26,000kms for less than half the price of a replacement high mileage 2.3. Bolted straight in. Only thing i had to change was the 2 solenoids and put original injectors in. Thats it. No engine codes and car runs perfect. The 2.5L motor came complete with intake manifold, injectors and throttle body. The 2.5l throttle body plugs straight in. Easiest engine conversion. Probably a little different if you have a 6 that is not built in 06 or later. But wouldn't be much more work.
Strip engine down to long block and add all the mazda parts onto it. I think you'll need to change the crank pulley as the crank trigger teeth are different. So you'll need timing tools and a new diamond washer.
Sort of unrelated question. Will the 5spd manual transmission from a 2004 2.3 match up to the transmission from a 2007 2.3? My transmission is on the way out and I'm trying to find a used one.

You can but you'll need to swap ecu and harness. I am not sure about the trans harness. I did this on a 2.3 manual which is the same base ford block. The 2.0 is a mazda engine so harness and ecu is different, as well as injectors and other stuff.
2.3 from the 09 escape will work in the 2.3 08 mazda yes. You'll need to swap the crankshaft pulley from the Mazda engine. Which means you'll need a new crank bolt and washer. One piece and very cheap from Ford. You'll need the timing tools to lock it a tdc when you do this.
Well it will still work then but you'll need to change the intake manifold from the 2.5 mazda onto the Ford 2.5 then swap the intake manifold runner actuators over. Increase in low rpm torque which is where most normal driving occurs. So better take off and cruising torque which is better for mpg. Instead of choosing between short and long runner intakes trying to get good torque and hp you can just have both. Just like vvt systems where you can have a torque cam profile for down low with little valve overlap to a hp cam profile with alot of overlap for top end.

what difference do they make to you?
im not trying to drill you i just genuinely dont know why someone would keep them
Increase in low rpm torque which is where most normal driving occurs. So better take off and cruising torque which is better for mpg. Instead of choosing between short and long runner intakes trying to get good torque and hp you can just have both. Just like vvt systems where you can have a torque cam profile for down low with little valve overlap to a hp cam profile with alot of overlap for top end.
Hey bud can you help me oit
What do you need?
I have a 2006 mazda 2.3 standard emissions I want to do the 2.5 swap will a motor from a 2013 ford fusion work?
Thanks for your reply brother
Do you know what years I can use brother
when it came to the camshaft sensor, did you use the 2.3 camshaft or the 2.5 with 2.3 sensor?
Honestly don't remember which likely could be cause they were the same, if they are different use the one for the 2.3
What 2.5 liter engine do I need to swap into my 2005 Mazda 3 hatchback (2.3litre)
any of the 2.5 pre 2010 should work I believe. The ford engines are much cheaper. Maybe even 2011 but I can't remember when they changed.
What transmission did you use?
Same stock 5 speed.
