- We spent the 2016 New Years Eve at Madeira. The island is not large (it's only about the size of a big city), but the terrain is very undulating: it's hard to find a flat ground or a street that is not steep. We had only one week, and the weather was far from perfect, but we still experienced a lot: hikes in the mountains and on the rocky coasts, volcano museum, lava caves and pools, tobogan on the Monte, botanical gardens, and last but not least, the great NYE Fireworks of Funchal. All spectacular, and very diverse. Must go back someday.

Have been going for 16 plus yrs now. fantastic island. if you are able to walk around a town for an hour or so shopping then you are capable of walking along some fantastic Levada walks. Just go. Great island. Great people. Great experience just lazing by the pool, enjoying the local eateries, bars and restaurants or going for a lazy, easy walk alongside a Levada or for the ultimate, fantastic, never to be forgotten Pico Pico hike, (described as the best walk in the world in a national paper some years ago). GO, do not procrastinate. Go.

lovely video. i last went in 1997. the airport has changed since then (though i saw the start of construction work as my plane departed) and i think there are new roads too. Time to go again!

Awesome footage! I went to Madeira this Christmas and made also a travel video. This was my first video where I used a drone. I bought the drone 2 days before the trip 🙈 and practiced a little bit in the DJI simulator. But man.... when you watch the videos online it looks like a computer game. But when you start this expensive thing yourself and hear the wind blowing and all the stuff.... I forgot all the settings as soon as it was in the air and got almost a heart attack every time 😂. It doesn't help to know there is no chance of recovery with all the steep terrain. But in the end the footage is epic. Would love to know your opinion!
Your video is awesome, but advertising it in the comments of another video is not a really nice thing. (I'm not talking exactly about this comment, but about the other three, also accidentally mentioning your video.)
Madeira - as every island in the middle of the ocean - is very windy, and you have to be very cautious when you fly your drone. I learned a very important rule there: Never fly in the way of the wind, before you check how fast you can fly in the opposite direction (against the wind). Luckily I still had 10+ minutes battery time when I turned back, because it was just enough to return, as the wind was almost as fast (~45 km/h) as the maximum speed of my drone (~50 km/h).
Since that - although I've never lost my drone yet - I always backup my SD Card on the end of the day to make sure the footage is safe.
@@thearctictern9323 I'm sorry for the advertising... I'm still experimenting with the whole UA-cam thing and am trying to find out how it really works. I'm struggling with people finding my video and I don't understand why certain videos have so much more views than others. So I'm trying out different approaches to understand things better.
Thank you for your drone tipps. Also a good one I googled later is to click on the minimap and check out the level of the drone while hovering still. That way you can somehow measure the wind and its direction.

Madeira is an excellent place for hiking, even for the less trained: The levadas have just a little slope to let the water flow, so you can walk a big distance along them - surrounded by amazing scenery - without going uphill too much. Don't miss it if you are there!
