  • Knitting sweaters that end up too big? Your size selection may be why! Let's talk more about it in the comments---do you have any questions?
0:30 - Why choose a size based on upper bust?
    3:44 - Where do I measure?!
4:16 - But what if my boobs don’t fit?
6:02 - What if I’m knitting patterns that don’t tell me the intended upper bust measurement?

thanks for this -- i started knitting 2.5 years ago, and almost every sweater i've made has been too large, except this year when i started tentatively sizing down. still working on finding the best approach to interpreting "standard" patterns (and also still trying to shake my lifelong paranoia that the chest area will be too tight for my aesthetic preferences), but really appreciate your addressing this issue in your patterns -- and hope you do indeed make a video on bust darts!

🙌🙌🙌 Hallelujah! And thank you Aimee. This makes sense. I’m finishing a sweater that I chose one size down, but probably should have been 2. Thank you ❤

Brilliant Amy! Great advice and I found it to be spot on. I think I will lean into buying your patterns just because I think I can trust the size and I can add bust darts if necessary. I can't thank you enough, but I hope by supporting you as a designer that will be a good start. Be well!

This is hugely helpful! I have had a hard time with sweaters turning out too big and just deciding to try knitting a smaller size. You just confirmed my decision and gave some helpful tips. I also will now be checking out your designs now.😊

Fantastic! I hope that you can find the perfect size range for your particular upper to full bust ratio.

Thank you! Echoing what everyone else has already said, this is a much-needed video that helps people with larger busts make the right choices to get their sweaters to fit the way they want to! I have also had the problem with sweaters being too baggy in the back, too sloppy/loose in the shoulders. Thank you for accounting for this in your patterns, I'm about to go buy ALL of them!

This was AMAZING!! I need to knit one of your patterns. I am going to go link this wonderful video to The Grocery Girls, it is a topic that comes up often in their podcasts 😊

Thanks Aimee ❤ great discussion. I definitely have an issue with sizing and typically end up with a yoke that bunches up above each arm (extra yoke fabric). So upper bust I might be a much better number. I can see how this works with top down designs. Not sure about bottom up. In any case, I knit with Nutiden frequently and just purchased your new Matthew pattern. Looking forward to exploring sizing - better fit is my 2023 goal

That's a great year goal to have! Hope that you will knit the best fit for you yet. Every single sweater is a learning experience

Thank you! Excellent explanation!! (I was wondering why some of my yoked sweaters ended up with extra fabric in my armpits.)

I will say that for yoked sweaters this can be a design choice or grading inconsistency! Especially for round yokes it can be super helpful to figure out how long you prefer the yoke to be and adjust patterns for that. It's what I do myself when I knit other folks' patterns that may not be my preferred armpit fit.

Great explanation, and it makes SO much sense. I'll be picking my Slightly Sassy V size using my upper bust measurement. harpingJanet

Aimee, I am a new sweater knitter and this concept is very new to me, but I am scared to purchase the sweater to knit. I have no clue as to which size we are to choose and how do I implement the bust darts you are suggesting. I purchased one of your other patterns but had no clue navigating through the pattern. Would you consider doing a video on the whole process from start to finish for those who are interested in your sweater patterns.

Hi Janice. Unfortunately it’s so far beyond the scope of a pattern writer to do this! I highly suggest bringing it to a local yarn shop if you have one near you. Or, a local spinning or weaving guild usually has beginner meetings.
