It's definitely been useful for me in a lot of cases! More importantly, it's a matter of getting those *round* movements, whether it's a figure of 8 or just a half-circle. There's something about curved movements that just makes things a bit nicer
I usually implement a ton of squash and stretch, this was an interesting case where I think I preferred it with none! (But with your other changes leading up to it). For the exact reasons you mentioned too: the stiffer form makes the character look and feel more strong, more snappy. The stretch on the gloves in particular make them look a little liquidy- I do like that stretch frame when landing though, at 5:00 is where I think it looked best. The bounciness on the gloves is already in the animation! So adding stretch just makes it feel too bouncy
i think it's a style preference. i like rubbery cartoon motion. but here, i think it's really subtle (or maybe my eyes just aren't as good). i don't really notice the squash and stretch on the gloves when it's in motion.
I remembered this channel when I realized I definitely needed this kinda knowledge if I want this game concept to come to light, please keep doing hese
Great insights! I'll start thinking more about circular movements from now on (and using multiple Aseprite layers). The new version is a big improvement, thanks for taking the time!
Hey thanks again Enzo for sending in your work, it was definitely a fun one to work on! As for layers, I'm quite terrible with them myself 😂 so don't beat yourself up much about that. It's mostly a problem when you want to go back and make changes
great video! it really illustrates that small adjustments can make a big difference. i think how high his feet come off the ground and the fact that he's on a single foot the whole time are not a very balanced or realistic way for a boxer to stand. those elements make it look more like a dance. so that's something i would have changed, but doing so would have been a bit more work and also lose the essence of the animation, so it's good that you kept the basic idea of it to show how squash and stretch and arcs can improve the motion.
Thank ya! And yeah I didn't want to stray *too* much from the original animation, but you're comment about the feet coming too high off the ground could be true. At the end of the day, I think a lot of it comes down to how you want things to feel 🤷♂️ Appreciate the feedback 👍
Good question. In this case, I would select, hold control, and then drag the selection to the side. This effectively duplicates the selection and moves it at the same time
I've taken a break from commissions in recent times but I'm open to little pieces of work if they peak my interest. Feel free to message me on twitter or send an email to the same place if you're interested 👍
Lesson learned: recording immediately after waking up = bad idea.
lol
xD
These changes seem minor at first but the difference is night and day
It's often the small things!
My biggest takeaway: I gotta start thinking about that figure 8 kind of motion more, and how it can make things look much more lively
It's definitely been useful for me in a lot of cases!

Yep I think you've put it nicely there! Sometimes it's more appropriate to ease up on the bounce to give things the right weight 👍

its been a while that i didn't make some animation but your videos making me feel like i should come back to it
Hey go for it, I'm glad the videos can offer some inspiration
Great!! Keep it up
Thank ya, will do!
Can you please make a new video about the 8 move?
Cool
When you add squash and stretch to things, do you select, copy it, paste, move it over, and just leave the underneath original pixels to do the work?
Good question. In this case, I would select, hold control, and then drag the selection to the side. This effectively duplicates the selection and moves it at the same time
ah, thank you very much. what an interesting technique. love your stuff btw, very easy to digest@@nootall
Hey man, do you do commissions? I would love to buy an animated character from you
I've taken a break from commissions in recent times but I'm open to little pieces of work if they peak my interest. Feel free to message me on twitter or send an email to the same place if you're interested 👍
Just animated and sent mine if you would like it
Having a look at it now! Expect another feedback video sometime next week (I'm going to try to get through a few at once this time)
