The original Dolomite was steel frame, the Dolomite ALX is the newer aluminum frame version.
The Kona website has a couple hardtails under $600 and the Lava Dome is just over $600.
Gotta take another look, I hear the lanai is a sweet bike???

I have a Kona , it’s a great bike, internal routing for a dropper is a big plus, if you stick 120mm forks on it, it becomes a semi trail bike you can also fit 2.5’” tyres the stock wheels are ok, and it has a freehub at that price it’s a better buy than the cannondale. Maybe look at the lanai and the fire mountain as they’re even cheaper.

For $600 I would go with GT avalanche, and upgrade the fork and group set, but yeah the rear axial is the PIA, QR dropout cannot be changed anyway.

I love my Lava dome. Dropper post, and you are golden. The ride quality is much better than those other bikes (cannondale looked cool too). Also Kona lies about the geo, is says 68 ht angle but it is actually slacker. I put a 140mm forks on mine and it is a beast.

First off, I had no idea Wolfman was a Giants supporter. Right now is the best time to buy used. Prices are finally reflecting the markets low demand. FYI Dolomite is steel. Dolomite ALX is aluminum but is actually a rebadged Argus Trail.

Hi, I've been following your channel for quite some time now and I must admit that it has inspired me. But the latest videos don't appeal to me. Don't get me wrong, but I preferred when you made videos in your natural studio. It had the unique atmosphere of a small father and son workshop. I liked that vibe of hanging parts on the walls and workshop decor. But I'm glad to see you guys, and I'm glad you're still active. Keep it up!
There is also the Ascend Zion for $500 , Which is a bass pro shops brand of bike and still has upgradable stuff. I would really appreciate if you could do a review on that bike too when you start riding again. Btw I’m a teen just getting into MTB’s and I’m looking for my big bike to go on more variety of trails. Your videos have taught me so much about bikes so I also wanna say thank you for doing what do! The Konas at Jenson USA are as much as 50% off right now which can't be ignored! Granted, you will pay $85 for shipping, but they have the Mahuna (Rock Shox air fork, Deore 1x11, hydro discs, tubeless ready wheelset) for $599.94 and it's available in M-XL sizes. I know this is all about $600 or less, but if anybody is looking for a dope hardtail and can stretch their budget, there are some really nice options. I am really tempted to get a Big Honzo DL for under $1100 delivered to my door.

Great content guys, i purchased a 29 Inch XL Eastern Alpacha for $349 about two months ago and its been great with no issues, parts on it are decent with an upgrade path.
I read a review that said the cranks
Would not stay tight and the breaks leaked. Was it BS? Have you rode it pretty hard?

18:20 These seem like a nice one, but the higher morel with better fork and parts on sale, that's a better deal. But this bike at 50% is a good deal. But if there was a Kona Honzo for similar price I would go for that.

68 deg definitely nicer than most xc bikes it seems, but not looked at xc bikes lately.
If it was mine, what I would do is install a dropper post, oval chain ring. keep it as is and look for deals then upgrade.
Would be nice if it had tru axle, but that's rare at bikes at this price point. But that won't make the bike safer. Axle can be overtightened, won't happen if you do it by feel, around 10nm, but easier and quicker to tighten, but quick release skewer if using a Shimano skewer the handle should tighten at 90 deg(straight out, level), this imprints the palm of your hand shortly, so not as comfortable to work with.but never had any issues with QR skewers. But many people manage to do things wrong, the return springs that make the nut and clamping side spread out were put on wrong, or two on one side, lever at bad positions like under fork leg, on chain stay, 1mm away from the rotor, just spun until it stopped, not clamped. tru axles are more idiot proof apart from overtightening, but you feel when it's enough, you have to really want to overtighten it to go past 10nm.
The other styles of QR skewer levers can be confusing as you can't easily tell the angle, to know if you are tightening it correctly, as the angle fo the lever does not match the clamping force so you have to go by trail and error. But those you can't go past the clamping point and close to the disc. But I prefer the classic Shimano qr levers as they are easy to work with. But not idiot proof. Been around for many decades.

The Kona was very cool. Would have been great if they had mediums, but I doubt they would have had that price. The Kona did have a clutch derailleur. The Cannondale was a good deal also. The Mongoose not only had a crappy fork but also a steel seat post.
Hmmmm, that's interesting. I wanna saybthe only difference between the Ardor and the Colton is the seatpost diameter???
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS They show the same style seat post in the photos. Not the aluminum posts that include the base for the seat, instead the post (usually steel) that requires the steel collar to hold the seat in place. I sent an image through text.
Had it been me, I would probably go with the KONA Lava Dome.

A freewheel dings the budget IMO. If you ever want to upgrade the drivetrain you gotta replace the rear wheel. No bueno!
That Cannondale is an awesome deal. It takes the win IMO. I'm still riding a Cannondale I bought in 08.
The Dolomite is still steel. There's a Dolomite ALX now that upgrades some major parts. Most major is that the ALX is aluminum. The ALX also has a 2 by with a cassette plus trigger shifters.
The Kona is sweet and would win this BUT it's too big for me:(

10:22 Geometry wise Ardor is better than this, this one has massively long stem, steep head angle.
But the cassette or free wheel is tiny. I hate those forks too.
