I hope you keep a lot of your stuff in storage.. I remember when Austin Evans house burned down and he
lost most of his collection. Rare, but it could happen.
The disc drive is the same as the Sega CD Model 1. I used parts from a Model 1 to repair a NGCD top loader.
Thanks for the video. I’m going to clean mine. I’ve had it for 25 years and I’m glad that it’s still running.
Been so long for a cleaning video, but good to see again nonetheless. Great cleaning Adam, cheers!
I didn't even know these consoles existed! Really cool restoration, good to see these again!
Planning to get a Neo Geo CD Model 2 from Japan. I love the design of the 2nd model.
Your cleaning videos are always so satisfying. Definitely my favorite videos you put put
Was waiting for another cleaning video in forever. They're so comfy
Informative as always, good work Adam
I could watch these all day. Seeing what they look like inside is very interesting to me but I don't know why. The retro consoles at least. Thank you, Adam.
Oooh yeah, finally a new one. I absolutely dig these. Great work Adam!
Nice, I recently purchased a front loader off ebay. Definitely will be using your tips to clean my front loader.
Front Loader for under $20 working, that's great lol. Good job 😎
Just picked up one of these! Sadly not the sort of deal you got, but thank you for all the info!
Loved ur video Adam I've missed thses videos alot glad u brought it back love watching u clean a system always fun to watch and super informative can't wait to see what else u clean
Awesome video Adam!
Fantastic stuff as always, Adam!
the cd drive in these is the same as the mk1 mega cd unit, usefull info for repairs and for sourcing new laser units, i have actually seen suppliers charging more for the laser just because its for the "neo cd", yet the sega cd unit was 15 pounds cheaper, they had the same part numbers lol, dont get skanked.
I always enjoy your cleaning videos, Adam--it's been too long!
I had no idea this existed, crazy little contraption
My air duster is fantastic. The clump of dust it blew out of my mega drive cartridge slot was incredible. Looking forward to Magnavox odyssey 2 cleaning video 😉
That's a nice looking board 👍
was the neo-geo cd ever released in the us? all i've seen online is japan units
Pledge is Mr Sheen in the UK.
i just use wd40
Great work Adam 👍
What I'm always worried about is for this neogeo cd model is that there is no eject button on the console and there is one for the menu screen meaning the game could be stuck inside forever
I mean, you can open the system up and get it worst case scenario.
Cool find. Never had one, but it's a neat looking console.
My brother is planning to get the it on his trip to Japan, he's hoping to find it in one of the book/hard-offs.
whoa! had no idea there was a front loading NeoGeo CD console.
I use pine sol , it gives you perfect shiny black finish . It’s actually really good.
Good video
That's an incredible deal !
Interesting to see the insides of one of these
Have you pondered the ideal of running it though a dishwasher
Hey does anyone know if this particular system was released in the UK because I prefer this design to the top loader and would prefer to use this model but I havent seen any from the UK online.
I love these! And it's a Neo-Geo CD!!!! Nice!
Interesting video. Thanks, dude
We going to get a Magnavox Odyssey disassembly? Should be some good 40 year old dust in there.
Not sure yet.
Love these cleaning videos. Do one for Fat ps3!
Interesting that this was just uploaded! I was playing mine last night and it kept rejecting discs. I tilted it slightly to the left while it was loading discs and it works perfectly! Really strange. I’ve kept a bunched up shirt under the right side to keep it tilted
Nice find Adam. Did you you add grease to the cd drive cogs and the underside of the cd tray? You will see teeth that will probably need grease too.
Did anything in this video give you the impression he knows what he's doing?
Ayyy. Adams alive.
Damn that is crazy. I am familiar with all the other major Neo Geo machines even the Neo Geo Pocket, but this, wow super interesting. I guess this was the first design before they made the sleeker top loader?
cool neo geo talk adam
Should do a vid on cleaning the original Xbox controllers would be quite interesting love this vid btw great work
any plans to do a retroactive fourth gen recap video on the Neo Geo CD now?
Nice cleaning video! :D
Hey Adam. I’m finishing up a documentary for the Neo Geo. I was wondering if I could use parts of your recap of the AES within? I PROMISE to give you, and your company: Figure It Out Productions credit, and Special Thanks. Especially for videos like these. If I may (for the sake if you DO intend on cleaning the AES) DO NOT use Windex/Windolene on the system itself. The console’s manual, and the Neo Geo Development Wiki states that it will-in fact discolor! I’d recommend Armorall Cleaning Wipes instead. Sure the system will look greasy, but it actually helps to polish it. Works well for my Sega Genesis/CD.
Sure, go ahead.
Planning to get a Neo Geo CD when in Japan
Interesting that they decided to use zip ties on the inside. Very odd. But I guess they didn't really think a bearded guy would be opening it twenty-some odd years later.
So how's the load times for you?
Hey Adam, did you get the Neo Geo Mini?
Great video Adam! How big is this console compared to a 3DO model FZ-1?
Hello Adam, my front loader is closing tray automaticly could you help me to fix this issue? thanks
You might be running into the same issue as me, does it attempt to read a disc or just spit it back out?
8.22 for the magic eraser
Classic Koralik
Amazing video, love the NEO GEO. Are buying or have bought the new NEO GEO home arcade?
Nah
Have you tried using lighter fluid on the scuff marks instead of the magic eraser? I tend to find it works quite well on game cartridges and old toys and it less abrasive than magic eraser.
But I suppose it would depend on what the scuff it.
I have never used lighter fluid. I always use isopropyl alcohol. Doesn't lighter fluid cause similar degradation of plastics like acetone?
Either way, anyone who uses magic eraser to rub down a console is an idiot. It ruins the surface finish. I do know that's what the retards at game stop do to their "refurbished" consoles. Magic eraser is only good for spot treatments and metals.
Will there ever be a cleaning of any of the consoles from the xbox 360 onwards?
SilverStormShadow He's said they're overly complicated too many little parts and such and essentially not worth it.
Just use compressed air and common sense :p
Not much of a point, those have too many other problems that a cleaning can't solve.
Low res on this video or bad lighting? Anyway, good watch! :D
Aww man Adam, you didn't throw some white lithium grease on the gears and rails for the cd drive? WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE?!
I'm a monster or something.
Who needs a neo geo mini when you got one of these.
Anyways. how's the latency with the neo geo mini. mame in retro pi is unplayable for me. example metal slug and can't jump right before the ledge when moving. gotta jump a bit before which is annoying.
What is the advantage of this system versus the aes or mvs? Are the games cheaper?
Yeah, that was the plan anyway.
Think caps have gone on mine possibly was working flawlessly then randomly started resetting itself. Would happen after a while then after few more days of testing it to hope it magically was ok, it would constantly reset barely getting past the initially loading screens of any games...need to find someone to repair it. I have another unit with a defective disc drive which I attempted to repair but failed. Uses same laser assembly as the original mega cd but it was beyond my limited skills. Need someone in uk I can trust to repair them!
You sure it's not just a bad power connector? That was the issue on mine.
man, i wish i had either one of these or a 3do (do you find 3do consoles in the us adam?)
Own an mvs collection but always wanted a cd as alot of games are peanuts. I own 5 saturns so if they die i'm fine, just cant bring myself to buy neocd for $100+ when they die so often. No idea if they can be an easy fix either.
Can you do one on the sega cd model 2?
Dude I think you Completely disassemble other consoles AND clean it, cause then the video is twice as useful because then people know how to take apart the console AND clean it. With this in mind, I recommend making reduxes of previous cleaning videos. You don’t have too. Just my opinion.
Which is rarer: a divers 2000 or a crystal white gamecube?
Divers 2000, I'm certain
I mean, technically it'd be the crystal Cube.
I thought windex and plastic weren't really a good combo, have I been misinformed?
No chemicals and plastics are really a good combination in the long run. I'd just rise it off very well after to keep unforseen reactions to a minimum at least.
I think they could have made these consoles a bit bigger. lol
Nah dude, windex got some shit inside who leave a bit of grime on the lens, use 99% alcohol.
KOF FTW
Ayy.
That's pretty nifty m8
I would have gotten a Neo-geo but it was WAY too expensive
"I have never seen a console use zip ties"
Original Xbox does! They use it for the power cable to the HDD. Otherwise.. Yeah that is uncommon.
Mine never had them. Just popped the stickers to open it up for the first time a month ago.. I wonder if that's a first or second revision thing
The CD drive is oddly similar to the CD drive that the Sega CD model 1 uses. They look almost exactly the same. Strange
Yep, a lot of CD consoles back then used a very similar Sony / Sanyo / Philips CD chipset, and there were some common laser assemblies, too.
The 3DO uses the same type of Panasonic (Matsushita MKE) interface as the old CD-ROM drives sold by Creative in the early 90s.
The protocol for most of those chipsets is almost the same as well. I think the PCE / tg16 CD drive uses a Sanyo / Sony style chipset.
I've been wondering about a project to replace the CD drive in my Neo Geo CD with a faster one. I'm fairly sure the main bottleneck for the loading times is the drive itself, which is apparently a single-speed drive in the first NGCD (so around 150KB/sec).
@@electronash I think I heard something about replacing the drive with a faster one but forgot what the conclusion was.
Bugger the “factory original” zip ties 😤 Clean it proper and just get replacement zip ties.
BTW 2 years ago you weren't the first.
Hm?
@@AdamKoralik was kidding. Great content btw.
snk made kings of fighters
beautiful lust machine
So... apparently nowadays "cleaning" is a synonym of "restoration"?
I know you'll think I'm a shithead, but I really don't give a fuck at this point. I am disappointed when people claim they are doing some amazing repair job, while doing almost nothing other than impress other people who know even less about those devices.
Nothing you did in this video made the console work better apart from maybe cleaning the laser.
Here are some examples of what you should have done, to be allowed to call it a restoration:
- Re-flow solder joints (for example on the power input connector, which seems to be a common problem with this device)
- Replace some caps (I think some video output circuitry caps go bad in this device)
- Calibrate the laser
- Calibrate the disk drive tension
- Re-grease the drive gears
Those are just some things off the top of my head, even though I know almost nothing of Neo Geo CD repair. I however am familiar with how temperamental this CD drive is, because it is also used in other consoles.
How exactly can you call this "restored back to the condition when it came off the assembly line"? You don't think that's arrogant? In a way you are shitting all over the invaluable work of professional repair people, because you give viewers the impression "a good cleaning is all that's necessary". You think this device saw zero use within the past 24 years (based on when you uploaded the video) and none of the materials deteriorated?
You should have just called this a tear-down and left it at that instead of posing as some kind of repairman.
I think you really misunderstand the point of the video. I didn't claim this was a top to bottom dismantling of the console, with an elaborate focus on recapping everything, resoldering this, redoing that.
All I said I was going to do was clean it and hope it worked out. It did. If you have an issue with that, then holy shit dude, you need a hobby.
Adam, $18? And you almost never bought it? Seriously? Go buy some zip ties!
I think you're not understanding the sequence of events. But yes, obviously I bought it.

wow you are very rich I wish I could visit Japan but I am too poor
Rich? I didn't pay for the journey.
Mr Clean rubbing it in! ;)
Adam Koralik ok how did you buy stuff from Japan
Ever been to a Book Off or Hard Off in Japan? It's not expensive.
Adam Koralik no I have never left my town how much is a book off
i honestly skipped a head looking for the magic eraser part. you did not fail me.
