This has got to be one of the most satisfying videos I've ever watched, seeing a broken gem being restored to like new. I've got to get my hands on one of those controllers, and someday make a mod so I can combine that delicious d-pad with the buttons of another controller. Where could I start learning to refurbish or mod things like this? Help me out here RetroGameTech!
i started to like your channel , i am a maintenance expert my self actually , i repaired pc's and consoles for 12 years now , but i havent seen all those old consoles in my career time , you are quite lucky to find all these old hardware pieces ,
I wanted to say thanks for this video so much! The thermostat controller in my room has been wonky since forever, and so I saw this video a few weeks ago, and it occurred to me that the buttons might be the same style. They weren't exactly the same - these just used the metal dome switches over bare contacts on the board, not a microswitch, but the process for cleaning them up was the same. Got everything back together, and it works like it never has before! Thanks!!!
Thanks. Very true! It's so frustrating when I heard someone say they junked a whole system/controller just because it developed a small fault. So many useful parts wasted! :( I'm just really glad I managed to remember where I'd stored those little contact discs! :P
I have a PC gamepad that has the same problem (registering as going in a direction without being touched) and for years I thought I can't fix it but thank god I kept it! now I will try to fix it thanks to you :D Thank you.
Fun fact: Neo Geo Pad 2 and Neo Geo Pad USB, which are updated versions of Neo Geo CD controller redesigned for use with PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 respectively, use regular microswitches like the one you've shown, instead of tactile switches like the original Neo Geo CD controllers use.
I wish the PS2 controller was as easy to fix as this. Your main problem here seemed to be a massive accumulation of shite inside the controller and a couple of distorted micro switch discs. A very informative video, good stuff.
Thanks. I've got a couple of working Neo Geo MVS boards at the moment. I paid around or just under £50 for each. The price really depends on the version you go for and condition. I see a lot of older working MVS boards sell for around £40. The games I was playing were Breakers and Robo Army. Breakers is probably my favourite fighting game on the system :)
Thanks Luke. I couldn't find that tut you mentioned. Where abouts on the site is it and I'll throw a link into the description along with the others. Love these controllers! They have a really satisfying click to them and are perfectly shaped.
Thanks! Sometimes I wonder if making these vids will actually just bore the crap outta people, haha. It's really nice to hear when someone says they enjoyed watching. Cheers!
Time for a rebuild! A lot of the time those discs can just be refurbished instead of completely replaced. But GBA SP's contain the parts if you need them.
You might not have noticed but I'm a thrifty bastard when it comes to my gaming hobbies. I like to lag at least 5 years behind the current gen of consoles where prices are reasonable :P . So unless I find someone selling one for under £40 in the next few weeks, I doubt I'll be doing Wii U related vids any time soon, :P. Thanks for the suggestion though :)
Just regular cleaning items, nothing fancy. I normally just mix some shampoo into very hot water. Throw all the parts in and leave them to sit for 5min. After that I use an old tooth brush to scrub all the dirt/grim off. Works great! :)
manufacturers like SNK often "rebadge" off the shelf components I know NEC did this in the turbografx. SNK wouldn't waste money tooling new machines for a slightly different component, it might be an obscure part but it's probably out there.ps big fan of the show keep it up :D
For just over £10 I can't complain :) . Never tried the AES sticks but I'd really love to pick one up sometime. Neo Geo accessories can get pretty expensive!
Aww I love getting faulty controllers, I remember years back when me and my dad fixed a faulty 2600 joystick, great fun and super simple projects, plus you got a bargain on the controller! I prefer the AES joysticks though :)
Ty for the food for thought on this vid. Hopefully you can answer this but the discs dont give the clicking sound anymore well a few but i guess they got bent somehow when trying to take em out. Is there a way to buy replacements? Ebay has tactile switches with just the bare discs but dont know if it would work ty.
Thanks dude! Haha, it's funny because I actually had considered that. The charity shop where I got the little Sony had another identical model for sale. It was gone buy the time I went back but it would have mad a cool little mini cab project :) . I have zero room for even a mini cab though so probably for the best! :P
Hey buddy ! Great Vid ! your just like the king of repairs ! anyways i wanted ask how much if you dont mind saying, you got your neogeo console for ? plus what were the games you were playing in the vid ? Thanks man !
Ahhh.. I see what you did there! Yes it is indeed a joy to use. If only the Mega Drive had had something like this! Better yet, get rid of that crappy d-pad on the 360 controller and replace it with one like this! :)
bin watching quite a few of your videos lately and i was wondering if you were in to the n 64 i have like 6-7 n64 controllers with bad joysticks. was wondering if you had any tips on fixing those
That's good, when you have or can find replacement parts. May be you can give me advice? Where I can find rubber pad for sort of chinese PS1/PS2 Dualshock? I've got some of PS2 gamepads, but buttons feels bad, very bad sensations.
excuse me, i'm very interested to kow what camerra u used in this video and what kind of micophone u used lie the camera one or an external one Btw im a bigg fan and ur vids are great
very cool joypad. that must be a joy to use actually.. micro-switched thumb stick. nice. my fingers are sore from playing halo online. new stuff sucks. : /
Awesome, heres a request if you can, There is a controller for Wii U you have probaly heard of called the "Controller Pro U" by inerworks. The D-pad doesnt work so well on alot of them and the reset button isnt big enough, you need a pin to reset it. Can you do a video showing how to fix the dpad if posible and how to make the reset button a bit bigger or easyer to press. It would help ALOT of people including my self. Thank you
Nice, you should do a tutorial where you clean a console or a controller (for example the product that you use, something like that), here's my advice. :)
I am working on making my own Jamma Supergun and want to use the Neo Geo controller standard, but I am having trouble with the connectors. People go on about using normal DB15 connectors being to short, but in which way? Can you please tell me if: A. Will a Neo Geo Controller plug into a DB15 Male (console side, (aftermarket, not official 15 pin Neo Geo one.)) B. Or is it a normal Neo Geo console joystick plug (not aftermarket) will plug into a aftermarket female DB15 plug from the controller side. Any help you can offer is appreciated.
my neogeo cd just came in today with 2 controllers, but both aren`t making any clicking noises, in fact, they are stiff as hell and barely even move. i opened my control pad following this video and surprisingly, the little metal circles are missing... what am i supposed to do? where can i get these?
also, my controller looks alot different on the inside... the boxes inside are black and seem to be a little smaller.. there`s also so white plastic things inside
they are fairly cheep and aslong as you have a wii it will work with that, its just made for compatability with wii u. anyways, i love your videos so i understand if you cant do it!
Water\dust proof tact switches (Right Angle). Google Image this: "Waterproof Tact Switch Meet Ip67" The blue one is very similar. (???) I NEED to replace it!

CthulhuFTW enegining courses/experimentation and also other youtube how to videos to get the idea of main faults in machine's and how to fix them ect
i started to like your channel , i am a maintenance expert my self actually , i repaired pc's and consoles for 12 years now , but i havent seen all those old consoles in my career time , you are quite lucky to find all these old hardware pieces ,
Martin, watching you fix an old controller is better than an network T V tat!
Although I will never own one of these controllers I still find it entertaining watching you fix it. Looking forward to more repair videos

I love your repair vids, they are so pleasant and interesting to watch!
These videos are all so awesome, your personality and optimism makes it really great too!
Thanks. Very true! It's so frustrating when I heard someone say they junked a whole system/controller just because it developed a small fault. So many useful parts wasted! :(
I'm just really glad I managed to remember where I'd stored those little contact discs! :P
Another great video Martin. You seem to be some sort of retro gaming wizard with the eBay finds and repairs. Look forward to the next video!
Very cool. I've repaired a number of SNES controllers over the years and some NES and SMS controllers but nothing like this, very cool to see.
I have a PC gamepad that has the same problem (registering as going in a direction without being touched) and for years I thought I can't fix it but thank god I kept it! now I will try to fix it thanks to you :D
Thank you.
It is impressive how you fix a pad controller... easy and ready to work for another 10 years
Excellent repair Martin!! I love to see something broken Fixed, there's just something special about it. Cheers Martin

Excellent repair as usual. Just shows you shouldn't throw anything away that has useful and/or working parts in them :)
This was a huge help!! I've been agonizing trying to cut out those little white discs.
Thanks retro game tech, my neo geo cd pad now works mint !
Thanks. I've got a couple of working Neo Geo MVS boards at the moment. I paid around or just under £50 for each. The price really depends on the version you go for and condition. Awesome! I love the Lets Repair Series, Keep it up!
Thanks Luke. I couldn't find that tut you mentioned. Where abouts on the site is it and I'll throw a link into the description along with the others.
Love these controllers! They have a really satisfying click to them and are perfectly shaped.
Cool project. Glad you got it working. Neo Geo Rocks!
You seem to have very very much knowledge about retro consoles, nice fix again!
Thanks! I'm never quite sure if anyone will be too interested in watching me repair stuff like this.
Thanks for a rare look inside a rare controller
Thanks! Sometimes I wonder if making these vids will actually just bore the crap outta people, haha. It's really nice to hear when someone says they enjoyed watching. Cheers!

Thanks for the suggestion though :)
Thanks. Even if it was beyond repair I would have used it for spares or another project. Appreciate the support :)
I doubt you shorted it. It's probably just got dirty contacts somewhere or maybe a worn cable.
Just regular cleaning items, nothing fancy. I normally just mix some shampoo into very hot water. Throw all the parts in and leave them to sit for 5min. After that I use an old tooth brush to scrub all the dirt/grim off. Works great! :)
Cool hobby, i find it really interesting to watch :)
Thanks for your videos.I like them a lot.Do you use regular cleaning material for the plastic parts like liquid soap or an industrial cleaner?
Great video thank you, i know its old 2013 but you think this switch will work ?
Tactile Switch, RACON 8 Series
They work but need a bit longer nipples on the plastic pushers. Someone made a 3d Printed design of them, you can google it. Good luck.
manufacturers like SNK often "rebadge" off the shelf components I know NEC did this in the turbografx. SNK wouldn't waste money tooling new machines for a slightly different component, it might be an obscure part but it's probably out there.ps big fan of the show keep it up :D

Thanks.
There's a mod to do something similar to this but it's a lot of work and I'd imagine you'd lose that original feel.
Aww I love getting faulty controllers, I remember years back when me and my dad fixed a faulty 2600 joystick, great fun and super simple projects, plus you got a bargain on the controller! I prefer the AES joysticks though :)

I absolutely love these videos.
Ahhh.. I see what you did there! Yes it is indeed a joy to use. If only the Mega Drive had had something like this! Better yet, get rid of that crappy d-pad on the 360 controller and replace it with one like this! :)
You can buy replacement switches, I think allelectronics or digikey has some that are the same size. what are the dimensions of the switches in mm?
Haha, thanks. I appreciate you watching. I'd post more if I wasn't so lazy!
Looks much better now, at the start it looked like it would be safer to handle with rubber gloves.
It kinda is the trickiest part on the controller to clean and rebuild but it's really pretty easy :P . Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
I love how you saved the controller ^.^, it would have been sad to see it go to waste :'(
Just Subscribed!
bin watching quite a few of your videos lately and i was wondering if you were in to the n 64 i have like 6-7 n64 controllers with bad joysticks. was wondering if you had any tips on fixing those
Do you use your much? Or do you prefer the arcade stick?

Pretty sure you can't. I wish you could though. They appear to be proprietary SNK and designed specifically to fit inside that black plastic housing.
yeah! also.. you can copy/paste the url... put everything after the = sign in the vid url.
Cool fix😎😎Is there anyway to use this on a Genesis console? I like this controller😎😎😎😎😎
Nice video! :D would it be possible to make one of these pads work on the ps4? maybe an adapter or a mod?
Do you think that ds xl ones will fit well too? I have one that my son broke in pieces...
Man.. that robot has sweet chest & back lasers. :)
excuse me, i'm very interested to kow what camerra u used in this video and what kind of micophone u used lie the camera one or an external one
Btw im a bigg fan and ur vids are great
damn I thought the joystick will be the hardest to clean up, but since I saw this, I not scare to fix it up thank :)
I have 2 so always useful to know
@9:45 I found the GBA SP contact pads to be too small, and would not fix my click-free pad :(
Same as with the last controller. I'd just find a faulty GBA SP and harvest those discs from its mobo :)
How would you approach the repair if you did not have any spare parts? Still possible?
very cool joypad. that must be a joy to use actually.. micro-switched thumb stick. nice.
my fingers are sore from playing halo online. new stuff sucks. : /
I have a neo geo cd pad the directional control is not working. Do you repair the pads still? What are your fees? Thanks.
Glad you like them :)
Glad you like em! :)

Brilliant mate. I love what you do :)

Breakers. It's a very basic but fun fighter :)

You're awesome, dude.

Very cool channel!

It's definitely one of the best! :)
i swear i find the the dpad from neo geo Cd controllers the best dpad ever made, shame it breaks a lot :(
Nice fix
what did you search to find this
