- It's not very often you get handed the keys to a museum condition Subaru WRX STi 22B AND an entire race circuit to yourself, but thats exactly what we're up to today. Hopefully we don't blow it up.

Should we fix our 2 Door STI that blew up on the track? The like button improves the head gasket quality.

Now i know you guys are famous and have the insurance to cover anything that may go wrong, but i still can't fathom the fact that they allowed anyone to drive this car. especially knowing it only has 7000kms on the clock. you guys are so blessed to have that experience.

These things were $75k in New Zealand when new. That was a LOT of money back then.
I got to work on one as a car audio tech & it didnt feel like a $75k car back then: just another WRX.
True, I had a friend play around with the turbos on one of these. Tried twin turbo and it blew up, went back to single and it blew up again! Ended up convincing him to buy a Mazda 323 GTR 👍🏻 He said it was way better than the WRX and far less problems.

That sound makes me miss my stock MY02 WRX. It was the only quick car I ever drove and even without any mods, to me it was magic.

I know of a 22B in my home country that was converted to LHD back in maybe 2006-2007. I'd imagine those sorts of modifications would've seriously hurt its value, but back then nobody could've imagined in their wildest dreams that these cars would become so insanely valuable.
Around that period the car dealership I worked at bought one for 8 thousand pounds and then sold it for 12 thousand pounds. I nearly bought it myself.

That's a great private track. Great Subaru, not in anyone's wildest dreams would they believe it's future value would be almost 1 million dollars to buy one. It's crazy just thinking about that.
Excellent! Very special cars, and like you say, if you know, you know. To many people they are just another blue Subaru, but to others it is an absolute dream, the unicorn car of the generation in many ways.
I remember my best friend's neighbour used to park his 22b outside. As a 19 year old playing Gran Turismo 2 Endurance races all night I used to chubb up at the sight of it when leaving in the pre dawn light as I got in my mint 33k miles mini deluxe and headed home. Those were the days...

You should convert your type r to a 22B replica. A guy in Croatia makes the panels in steel to do it the right way and not from fiberglass rubbish. This would make a cool MGM series.
Gotta get down to Adelaide at some point and check out the SJ22B, it's the complete antithesis of this example. Fully built race car, probably one of the few 22Bs in the world that's actually used hard

I think it's time for a 2.2 build with a US 91-94 Legacy 2.2 turbo closed deck block. I have absolutely thrashed them with the low flowing sohc 16 valve head we got in the US and they just take the abuse and make big torque with a bunch of boost. Unfortunately I have seen many of these under appreciated motors go to the crusher here because it wasn't common knowledge that the block was the same block as the 22B.

While the 22B is indeed rare at only (about) 400 units ever being made, there are rarer models. And no, I am not one of those "there were only 152 of this super popular model made in this paint color!" kind of people... (I am looking squarely at those Acadia Green Impreza 2.5RS owners, all of the 2005 Legacy GT owners, and others just like them)
There were only 300 S201s, 300 STi Spec C Type RA-Rs, 300 Impreza UK300s, and the rarest single model that I know of: Legacy S401 with only 286 made out of the planned 400. Many of the leftover parts for the unbuilt S401s became the 2003 Legacy S-Edition.
Back in the day they knocked out a 555 version of this car, sti, all the fruit, very expensive, very exclusive, i blew the fkn doors off one with a $2500 junker rx3 13b na bridgy, the look on the guys face as i chirped second next to his door after his admittedly quick launch was priceless, as was im guessing his eternal memory of what series one tail lights look like in the distance 😂

Just watched the 22B video with Benny. He said you could get one for around $65-$75k, 10 years ago. lol
And we nearly did get one! Prices changing constantly but when we shot this late last year they were still trending up

Way back when ( when I didn't have children ) there was one for sale at Autostyle Beverly Hills Sydney. It was 90k from memory. I remember saying to my wife " should buy that, it will be worth some serious coin one day".
There also was one on Carsales not long ago. It had 3500 k's for 800 grand.
I was at a track day a few months ago at Chadwell park in the UK and there was a 22b there. Battle scarred and beat up. Mad
I was at the Silverstone festival last year and stood behind what was Colin McCrae car. Build 001 when it sold for £430k at auction. 😎
they also made a concept car of this later on in life and top gear loved it never put it in production done by prodrive
You mean the Prodrive P2? I dont think it was related to this in any way, it was more an effort from Prodrive to stretch their legs after building the P1, which is a worse edition of an STI Type-R.

One day I plan to take my 2.2 closed deck block and build a pseudo 22b. It's currently in a 3rd gen legacy gtb. Love it. Safe tune makes 220 wheel. But Iv always wanted a sedan impreza
I know of two of these (at least when they had bottomed out around the €25k mark many moons ago) that were within 6 miles of each other in Ireland. One got hit in the rear while doing donuts, the other had a garage built especially for it. Both owners have kept very quiet about whatever happened to them. Now I know why.
The reason this car exists is to satisfy homologation rules for WRC. They needed a specific amount of production road cars to take it racing in the series.

I felt lucky that I spun up one of these on Forza Horizon 5 last night. They seem to be fairly rare no matter which world you use them in.

A friend of mine rolled one of these into a field in the UK about 20 years ago. How bad would you feel knowing now how much it would’ve been worth now!
Closest ill ever get to driving or owning a 22B is if i can get my hands on a nice late 90's 2.5 RS here in the states. Ive always loved those but the 22B is really special. and im really not even that much of a Subaru guy.

Larry Chen had recently a garage tour of an Aussie that used to have 22B as a daily back in the days.
Subaru Australia brought in a lot of limited number locally delivered vehicles. But the 22B was always the unicorn (5!). I had a Subaru Liberty (Legacy) B4… Marty is familiar with the twin turbo aids. It wasn’t the fastest thing, but I miss it all the same. That said, other than the S401 I can’t really see those appreciating in nostalgic value too much.
Speedhunters did an article driving a 22b and a gc8 wrc car side by side. As wild as the 22b looks.... The wrc goes even further

I don't hate it by a long shot, I think its a cool car, I just don't understand it. Different shocks, slightly up-rated engine, subtle bodykit, I get that it's a limited edition but you could easily make a far better impreza for $20k so where does the extra $980,000 come from

Bro pick yourself up a EJ22T and build that up. Its the Grand dad on the EJ22G in the 22B. They made just over 8000 EJ22T's so you can find them. BUT it will cost you.

Due to serendipity, I found one of these parked on the street in Osaka. I didn't even realise what it was until I walked up to it for a looksee. I took a few photos of it that day.
200k landed for the bottom end of the 22b spectrum, Andrew Hawkins posted about one recently.

Yes, 2 door 2.5rs is hard to find, a 22b is the pinnacle of the Impreza. I would fix it.
Cars were just better back then. No one gave a pair about Apple connectivity or skill sapping blind spot alerts. They just cared if the car was fun or not.

Yeah 600k AUD is a bit more plausible. Car nerds fall for this all the time. Just because two people got drunk at an auction once a set a record price that doesn't mean that's the value for ever after.
for any car to be worth a million, the first thing you've got to do is find someone with a spare million they can drop on a car. then of that short list, you've got to find someone with an interest in that brand and that model. And want that model more than any other brand or model at that point in time.
Simply put, there isn't a list of half billionaires out there lined up to pay a million for this model car. I could see a lot of people finding 250k for it, but after that the field of potential buyers would thin out very quickly.

They definitely sound better that and for them to be doing awd donuts! They can't be holding their value very well.
The 22B makes me both happy and sad. Sad because it's still considered the pinnacle Subaru dream car. I wish they'd try something unique again on the levels of the Supra, Skyline GT-R, NSX, RX-7 etc. Modern Subarus are still nice, but nothing since the 22B has been on it's level.

HOLY Crap!!! Its now worth 1Millon Aussie Dollars. Far out I remember it was worth 100K 10 yrs ago. God dam. I'm pretty sure there is another one out there around the Eastern states, thats being used sparingly.

Love this car, i have a model of it coz i cant afford one. When I bought my 2004 STI (£11,500) in 2009 the place I bought it from had one upstairs for £30KPLUS but talking to the guys there were like the owner doesn't want to sell it. It has a wider body as you know but it also has specific welding (cant remember what its called) on all the panels - hence the price. Think it came out at £35K in the UK.
Seam welding, extra welding between the metal seams on the unibody, **all done by hand

It was in August last year that one of the prototype Subaru Impreza STi 22Bs sold for £480,500 UK Pound Sterling. The car was one of the prototypes originally gifted to Prodrive. One went to David Lapworth the engineer at Prodrive, Colin McRae also had one along with his co-driver Nicky Grist.

Are you sure the 22B was worth $50k? Subaru Australia only got in 5 Australian delivered 22B's back in 1998/1999. They sold for $125,000 back then, and their values only got higher due to their limited build of 400 worldwide.

The 22B isn't worth a million dollars as yet. I haven't seen or heard of one that has sold for that amount anywhere in the world, including at auctions. The highest I have seen one advertised for sale was at Road & Track dealership in Sydney last year. It was one of five Australian delivered 22B's, completely stock with 3500 klms, and advertised for AUD$800,000. Even that price in my option is slightly over valued.
