- My appearance on the game show. Run, lard ass, run!
Not to spoil the "secrets" of the sweep, but just some behind-the-scenes stuff for those that are interested:
As contestants, prior to the taping of your episode, they let you walk through the supermarket for 10 minutes, so you can get an idea of what things cost. That's one of the reasons you never saw people really looking closely at the prices of things while they were shopping. You had to have a game plan (and I did!)
The studio audience isn't nearly as big as they want you to believe. There are mirrors on both sides of the stage. With the exception of the contestants, the audience that is there are paid extras, which is why most of them are only slightly enthusiastic. They tape the inros of several episodes at once, so that once the game play begins, there is no audience. The rest of the game is done in an otherwise silent studio! So all of that extra clapping is added later. The store really was as big as a real grocery store (so to see it put together on a soundstage was pretty amazing). The food was expired, though. And some of them (like the meat) were, as you would expect, props.
The winners go home with a check in the amount of their sweep, but the 2nd and 3rd place contestants only got a sweatshirt! So it really was all or nothing, in terms of winning.
As for my own performance, as you could tell, at 200 pounds, I did not have the best cardio endurance of my life. In fact, prior to the sweep, I couldn't tell you the last time I'd run, let alone having to hustle for over 3 minutes! When the sweep was over, we were ushered backstage where they gave me a pitcher of water (I was clearly about to pass out from dehydration) and before you knew it we were back on the stage for the totals. Frankly, by the time the final dash came up I was still so out of it that I wasn't totally with it, otherwise I'd like to think I would have been quicker about that second clue.
All in all, it was a fun time, and I miss watching the show!
This TV show really needs to come back. I loved it when I was younger. And I can almost guarantee it will be even more popular now than before with America's growing love for everything material.
+William M. True except...the 'NEW' America loves crappy shows now a days...it needs to have drama, sex, drugs, violence, and other stuff that doesn't necessarily make a good show...just look at GSN...Baggage game show...really?! ahaha I would love it though...I grew up watching this and miss the old PAX tv station.
Thank you so much for posting this. Was sitting at home with my best friend and we started talking about this show and luckily found it on youtube. Glad you posted it :)
I loved this show! I haven't seen it for years. Thank you so much for the whole episode.
Me and my mom would watch this when I was little nearly every night lol.
Same i miss this show
Same but I remember morning times more clearly.
+RolyaRain me too!!
+RolyaRain
My Mom and I absolutely loved this show, especially the big sweep, and the hunt for the $5,000!
This and Shop Til You Drop I would watch literally every night.
Bring back Supermarket Sweep! One of the most spectacular game shows ever! There's only one person who's capable of emceeing this fast-paced, high-energy program...David Ruprecht! He makes watching "The Sweep" fun & enjoyable! I love hearing "The Ruper"'s oft-used remarks: "Welcome to Supermarket Sweep!", "These contestants will be running wild through the aisles" & "Somewhere out in our market is $5000, & it's up to you to find it.". I miss Supermarket Sweep. Bring it back!
I sooo remember and loved this show!!!
so do I
I was very little when this show was on. I barely remember it, but I do know I loved it!
Kelli Grey yeah I know it's been several years
Thank you. It has been 17 years since he passed, but happy memories come back at the strangest times! :) Thanks again!
I was watching Brothers and Sisters the other day where he made their foster child play supermarket sweep with him. And I was so excited and wanted to find it! I used to watch this then Mama's Family in the evenings at my grandmother's. There aren't fun gameshows like this anymore.
This used to be one of me and my mom's favorite shows. I loved it.
As a kid, SuperMarket Sweep was one of my favorite shows. I used to watch it religiously as a kid along with "Shop 'til you Drop", "Candid Camera", Louie Anderson era "Family Feud", and "Balderdash". This was when PAX was good tv.
I remember when SS was taken off and we just got one full hour of STYD (it was shortly after they brought in the Costco version of the store).
You know, GSN recently aquired the 2000-2003 episodes of Shop 'til You Drop. With that, there may just be a chance that we could see SS on the air once again. I hope GSN airs it soon.
UPDATE: I think the reason why this show can't be broadcast anymore is because of all the companies not wanting their names being seen without $$$. Considering that there were THOUSANDS of company names..... well uh..... this show would be very expensive to play on GSN.
UPDATE: Buzzr is rerunning the show now. I guess it isn't as expensive as it seems.
My mom and I watched this show religiously when I was a kid. This show and "Shop til you drop" were the best!
thank you so much for uploading a WHOLE episode!
i miss this show so much! i had a dream when i was like 5 years old of being on this show with my dad. i really wish it was still being aired. good job on the show though!
Thank you for sharing. My daughter LOVED this show when she was 3 and would push her little toy cart around the house.
Me and my mom always use to laugh as people bumped and banged trying to rotate for the round robin round on the little stage. You guys were fantastic, It was like syncronized swomming. Flawless.
I LOVE THSI SHOW!!! I can't believe the show never reruns anymore. WHY??? I mean, seriously, SUPERMARKET SWEEP WAS THE COOLEST IDEA EVER!
When I was younger my mom would take me and my sister to the store and if she was in a rush she would tell us to play Supermarket Sweep and we run down the isles to find what she needed really fast.
It was so much fun and lotss of amazinf memories! I miss this show!
This show was AWESOME. I used to watch it with my dad every day after school. He passed away when I was in 8th grade. Thanks for posting this! It made me think of happy memories!!!!
I miss the good old days watching this as a little baby!
I loved this game show every time when I come home from school I turn on the TV and watch this game show in the living room.
I loved this show as a kid! Thanks for posting it and adding the behind the scenes stuff. Very cool!
I loved this show. watched it a bunch after school when I was younger.
I've heard about it replaying on sKy but I was never able to find it (I always looked at late nights thinking it would be on after midnight like they always do to old shows) THANK YOU SO MUCH I HAVEN'T WATCHED THIS SHOW SINCE I WAS 7! [I'm even doing a small English assignment on it - things that have dissapeared that you miss from childhood]
I hope it plays on weekends though I'm kind of out everday (I can't wait to be 60 when I can spend all day at home!)
OMG THIS IS SUCH A DEEP MEMORY my mom and I would watch this all the time I always loved the part where I saw people running with like three and four turkeys 😄
I remember watching this all the time. Thanks for posting.
I used to watch this all the time and I always loved how the host would go find the $5000 and wave it in front of the contestants faces. I think he enjoyed it.
I loved this show. I use to watch it all the time. Wish it still came on
This show gives me memories. I watched it when I was 7,8,9 years old and the reruns from 10-12. I have not watched it since 2005 a rerun when I was 12.
I used to look forward to David's new sweaters everyday in the early years. Then he got going with the fancy rolled shirts and cool ties. lol
I ALWAYS WANTED TO GO ON THIS SHOW!
It reminds me of the good ole days.
Thanks for the information, because my roomate and I used to speculate what it was really like! :)
To answer Bruce Lozier's question, yes Johnny Gilbert did announce the PAX episodes, and the Sweep became a continuing series, this is from the 2nd season on PAX and 8th season altogether and Johnny left after the first series of PAX episodes(7th season overall).
Incredible- I remember watching this show (not this particular episode obviously) like it was yesterday. 13 years ago? Damn am I getting old. Btw- I think you did GREAT, both physically and mentally. I would have never guessed that second clue.
I used to love to watch Super Market Sweep in the 90's. This show is a classic!!!
this brings me back!! life was so much simpler when i could sit with my mom and watch this show. can i rewind please?
I grew up watching this show when I was about 8 years old. Any other watch this show as a kid?!?! The theme song is so great.
Wow! This brings back memories! I used to watch this all the time!
This is why the internet is incredible, I think of a show, type it in, and bam I'm watching it 2 seconds later.
I loved Supermarket Sweep!!! I watched this show many times!!! And Shop 'till you Drop too!!!!!
Thank you for sharing this! I used to watch this show all the time, along with shop till you drop! Loved it!
I used to love this show!! Thank's for posting!
I used to watch this show all the time, I remember after dinner we would come out in the living room, and turn on the TV and this show would come on. \
PS. I had such a good childhood indeed! And it's sad that this show got cancelled. But it's a good thing it's on UA-cam now, well almost all of the episodes anyway.
Greatest combination of game shows, consumerism and sweaters. Ever.
"THANK YOU" 😂😂😂
The announcer during the sweep run is so funny
Holy crap, I used to watch this show ALL the time on PAX. Great to see it again. Brings back a lot of good memories. Thanks for the post !
This is awesome. I used to watch this with my mom when I was a kid. We were just talkin About this on Christmas. Along with shop til you drop, and double dare lol
Man this show is OG!!! hahaha!!! I loved the bonus prizes as a kid!
Awwwwww snap I used to looooove this show! Thanks for posting!
GREAT video! Thanks for posting. It must've been a fun experience. I so miss this show! lol
Man...this was my FAVORITE show when I was in high school! And shop til you drop would come on after this. Me and my sis used to "play" supermarket sweep in Wal-mart! lol
We used to always watch this when I was a kid and Debt.
I used to love this show, interesting behind the scenes info, thanks for posting that.
Thanks for the backstage information! It's always fun to know stuff like that about a game show.
Steven, Great Vid. Thanks for sharing and providing an insight "behind the scenes" of the show. I always thought that 2nd & 3rd place contestants would at least let them keep the equivalent cost of the food. Seems that the best strategy for playing this game to help increase the total is getting all the bonuses allowed, easier said than done of course. I don't think in all the times I've seen the show, that anyone has loaded their carts with any sort of "wax" produce.
My favorite game show growing up as well, thanks for uploading! So much nostalgia, I wish they would bring it back. I'd watch it :)
wow i miss this show...as a little kid I always wanted to be on this show...feels good to see it again
i miss these shows great shows thanks for uploading
i remember watching this as a kid. i used to love this!
OMG Ty For posting This... Absolutely love this show!! so sad it isnt on anymore =[
we used to have this show in Australia back in the 90's, but an Australian version... used to love it...
Supermarket Sweep, for whatever reason, was one of my favorite shows as a kid. It sucks that the only way I can see it is to come on UA-cam and watch clips. I thought of this show again after hearing about "Guy's Grocery Games" on Food Network that'll be airing next week.
I used to watch this with my mom all the time. This and Shop Til You Drop. Every weekday at 6:00 and 6:30.
i loved this show growing up (im 24 now) and it was almost completely forgotten by me until i watched an episode of family guy lol not kidding. i miss this show but thanks for putting it on here :)
I wish they would bring this show back. I remember watching it with my great grandma. I really think it would be something people would watch.
"Anytime you're at the checkout line, and you hear the beep...think about all the fun you could have at...SUPERMARKET SWEEP!!"
Thx for posting this! I'd seen a clip of the show on a meme, and it reminded me of how much I LOVED watching this! I'm definitely playing along on my computer!
Mannnn.... This was the show. If you grew up in the 90's you will understand...
I ♥ this show. I, too, miss it. It just added to my desire to do one of those Toys R Us and/or KayBee Toys shopping sprees. They should bring those back, too!
Nope! He's in the musical "All Shook Up" at Music Theatre of Wichita this summer playing Jim! He has a great singing voice. Such a Joy to work with!
This show is one of my all time favorites
I used to watch this show. It should still be on the air
"can she fit all 5 in there? no problem." no pun intended ahahahhahahaha
I loved this show when I was little. I wish they would put it back on the air and give it a makeover.
Oh my god, I used to watch this show when I was younger with my brother, I loved it!! :]
Congrats on being in the show!
Brings back so many memories watching shows like these that we had back then on tv. Unlike now where these new game shows are boring and not even entertaining at all!
Nikki tried to be slick and grabbed an extra bonus 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I miss this show sooo much!!! I wish it still aired.
loved loved loved this show they should do it again!!!
I loved this show! I used to watch it all the time on Lifetime when I was little. I wish they would bring it back. I would so love to be on it! You're lucky that you got to be. :)
i could swear when the announcer called in the host he said "and now our very own midnight butt boy"
I always thought that the contestants would get to go home with the things the took in the final sweep. I never knew you got a check for the amount you took. I loved this show, I pray they put it on GSN or some other channel
I miss genuine game shows like this!! Lol of course you knew the naked lady question Steven lol bad boyyy!!
I always loved this show along with the price is right and wheel of fortune

Thanks for the behind-the-scenes stuff. This was a fun show.
wow talk about a razor thin win, the extra 30 seconds, the tootsie roll sweep, and the 50 extra early in the game really saved you, but im glad you won to share it with the rest of us.
I
Loved the show! Host gives me the creeps! I ran into John Lithgow riding up the Campanile Tower on the campus of UC Berkeley!
The dude in the pharmacy section is very smart. He is going to make meth out of that stuff and make a killing off of that. LMAO.
