      Try asking at the game shop you got the fleet at. They're probably willing to run events which encourage people to buy expensive models.
      If you got them online, then um...I dunno. Look for a local game shop?

      I mean, you'd either have massive and expensive Star Destroyers or fighters the sizes of grains of sand.

    • @adammullarkey4996
      @adammullarkey4996 7 років тому +4

      Harrison So why not just do away with the fighters? In the films, at least, the only time a fighter does any damage whatsoever to a capital ship was when it crashed into the (already weakened) bridge of the Executor. Of course, that's not counting the Death Stars, but they had massive, stupid weaknesses that would never exist if it actually happened.

    Scott, have you ever played Star Wars empire at war? It's an old Star Wars RTS and the multiplayer was just brought back online using steam servers instead of gamespy and it has a very active modding community (if you ever take a look at it, check out the mod "Republic at War", which can be found on moddb. It's practically a sequel to the original game).

    • @506thLittleberry

      This game is still alive? I wanted to get into it but I only found out about it when it was already a pretty old game. I thought the multiplayer community would have been long dead by now.

    I have the benefit of playing in one of the most active Armada groups in the world, with several dozen people playing on a weekly basis. The meta can become stupidly competitive very quickly; more than any game I've ever played, player skill matters. Don't be afraid to travel around to other meta groups, it's one of the best ways to learn new and different playstyles.Good video Scott.

    The beauty of a medium like this table top thing is that they actually have the latitude to grab designs from the more obscure areas of the expanded universe. So it's theoretically possible we could see ships that aren't necessarily loyal to one side or the other (Slave One, the Hounds Tooth... whatever IG-88 flies) and even ships that were designed specifically for the game. On a related note... thanks Scott... Now I have to explain to my wife where several hundred dollars disappeared to and why I suddenly have tons of miniature ship statues around the house...

    Glad to see this game's base is expanding. I'd never even heard of the game until my roommate exposed me to it. I got super lucky finding a guy who fell out of the game selling his collection for a respectable discount.
    It is worth it to pick a faction and stick to that. Saves some serious cash that way.

  • @leakycheese

    Thank you for an entertaining and knowledgable review of this game. It's cool to see so many Imperial vessels from the West End Games RPG of the 80's, man that was great.
    The price comparison with 40K is interesting, I think you will probably here this quite a lot in the comments but the Games Workshop offering is a more expensive to get a decent army for, potentially very much more so (although you can create fun skirmish forces for less if you want to play a different sort of game).
    It will be interesting to see how the upcoming Legion game fares, that resurrects the concept of a Star Wars table top infantry wargame that we last saw officially with the Miniature Battles game, also by WEG.

    Seeing X-wing and this Armada game makes me wish that Wizkids would update the Star Wars Pocketmodel TCG. It's a game from the mid to late 2000s that gives you styrene models to build of starships and ground vehicles along with some cards, a set of rules and mini 6 sided die. They had all kinds of booster packs and even a few tins. You can only buy them online now. Stores stopped carrying them around 2009-10 I think.

    I tried X-Wing but didn't get into it so I sold off my starter sets. The ships were too big I thought and there was way too much luck in the dice rolling. I prefer Armada for the size & detail of the ships and the amount of strategy involved in playing the game. Super fun!

    Geez, a little rich for my blood.
    This would make one heck of a video game. The upgrade cards and whatnot would match up perfectly with typical VG upgrade systems, you wouldn't need to fiddle around with straightedges to see where firing arcs end, and you don't need to pay through the nose for new models! Though that last part might put a damper on the idea once investors caught wind...

    As for expense the starter is expensive but if you keep up with waves as they come out I find it very reasonable. New players can build lists online and just buy what they need. Lists are generally limited to 400 points a side so often 3-5 ships, depending on how you build it, will make a full list. I have played much more expensive games.

  • @carbon1255

    I would like to see dreadnaughts, the old pre clone wars ships still used by the empire. They are also a smaller capital ship than the victory I & II, being 600m (victory II is 900m) and of course less wide. Known to be very hard to destroy, they are however slow and originally could not carry fighters.
    I dislike any smaller ships having the distinctive arrow shape too, the victory class for example just looks poor with its flaps. The other little star destroyers makes the real one less impressive. I do like the interdictor cruiser though, of course. Though not much use in the game really I should think, being a tactical weapon.

      Everyone needs a core set: amzn.to/2xWTY9r
      But core set on its own is weak, if you're playing it in a family situation like me pick up a few expansions to add more stuff on each side
      Rogues and Villains is good because it adds tje Millenium Falcon, Slave 1 and more amzn.to/2gUvo5l
      And then just get some extra ships for both sides amzn.to/2xm3Yfn
      I kinda put together a buyers guide here: ua-cam.com/video/S3rfyzLHLfU/v-deo.html but it got corrupted....

    For instance, I imagine that the dials on the model bases will get used quite a bit, but they seem to be made out of cardboard. I'm guessing that it will degrade quite rapidly. If I were to buy this game, that would be something important to consider.

    The fantasy flight games forums are a good place to post, if you want to find players in your area. community.fantasyflightgames.com/forum/402-star-wars-armada/
    Also, most of the players I've met would be happy to let a new player try out the game, and can provide balanced fleets to get started with.

    I once made a zero cost Magic the Gathering deck by writing the names of the cards on a deck of free playing cards from a casino. Maybe a similar solution could work for fans of this game.

    I feel there would be quite the potential for a PC game inspired by those rules.

    you sure its more popular than 40k? on a tournament near me which hosts several different games, x wing got 8 players(and it had 17 empty spots.) whilst 40k got 36 and 9th age got something like 20 and sigmar round 20 aswell. I wish it was more popular though its alot cheaper and it doesn't require work building and painting models which is expensive aswell. also the models are really cool aswell.

      The 'Most Popular' statement is based on distributer reports showing that it's making more money than 40Kicv2.com/articles/markets/view/38061/top-5-non-collectible-miniature-games-spring-2017

      That's also true, X-Wing was sold in stores like Target and Barnes & Noble in the US so it's easy to see how it got into lots of homes.

    • @Edw101wolf
      @Edw101wolf 7 років тому

      That makes sense. Where I live its only sold in hobby stores so it wouldn't get much exposure or sales in general compared with Target in the US.

    Me personally I don't feel that it's that expensive. Yes an ISD costs me $85AUD BUT it also takes up usually half of my list so in the grand scheme of things it's not that bad not expensive.

    You could have kitted out two kids football teams in Africa. The Scotts and the Manleys might be doing well in the league. Learning to work as a team, dealing with victory and loss.

      Sadly not in any official tournament, but what you do in the privacy of your own home is not their business.

    given Warhammer prices i guess the low price is a reason for Xwings pupularity.... Pretty simple the world, when you think about it....
    And as for expansions... has someone said "Pay2Win DLC" or "microtransactions"?

    I am a nerd and my friends are nerds but I know nobody who owns a tabletop wargame. I wanted to try it but with each of these games the starting price is damn high. I am a Halo fan, but getting a decent fleet for that is literally more expensive than getting an xbox one with Halo that I can use for other things as well. Even I did it I would have to get my friends crazy enough as well. That is just such a barrier to entry.

    • @scottmanley
      @scottmanley  7 років тому +2

      If you have a bunch of friends I'd suggest starting with Imperial Assault - it's a single box and plays with up to 5 players.

    It needs to be about half its current price. The insane cost coupled with a small player base is a huge turn-off for me.

      I confess I bought my Armada Core set for $50 on Amazon, but I never got close to that level of discount on anything else.

      I purchased the vast majority of my ships either used or at Barnes and Nobel. They're slowly getting out of Armada so scour the clearance bins and you can find a lot at 50% off.

    • @roshallock5747
      @roshallock5747 7 років тому

      You can find a lot of the ships on Amazon for a pretty significant discount compared to what the FFG wants for it on their official website. Problem is it tends to go both ways, as you can find people price gouging on the fighter packs, especially the first released set of fighter expansions.

    I dunno, these days two 40k armies could easily cost more (depending on how much flexibility you want/need) and you still need to assemble and paint them

    Meanwhile Battlefleet Gothic is for all intents and purposes dead. The videogame adaptation is pretty fun, and I'd love to get into the tabletop if it's ever re-released (at reasonable prices).

      The game available on tablet is a damn near perfect port of the original table top.
