Appreciate these most thorough, considerate, and comprehensive retro gaming technology reviews on the internet, bar none. Great work, as always, Russ! While I’m sticking with my Steam Deck, I respect all the Wallaces out there that find this device more to their tastes.
My biggest gripe with the 6800U in handheld devices is that the APU isn't really designed around a handeheld 5-10W performance level. In that specific setting the steam deck produces much better performance than the 6800U. However, it does become more powerful when it hits 13W and above. Which makes it a great alternative for those looking to play mostly docked.
Yeah that's what I'm thinking too, the Steamdeck performs extremely well at low TDP's, it may not be portable but for the bang for the buck, it's still the system to beat. I got an Odin so I just stream these games from my PC and I saved nearly $1000 not buying this Ayaneo device. lol.
@@umamifan I know! And I personally get kind of frustrated when I see youtubers optimize their games for 15W (often 60fps) on the Steam Deck, and then complain about battery life. It's basically the same as running the Switch in docked mode, portably. In those cases the Switch would also have 1.5 hours of battery life as well. Anyway, the Steam Deck's efficiency curve at 5-8W is crazy. You get about 75-90% of the full performance. The 6800U really only becomes cool once you dock it or use an external GPU with it (since the Steam Deck APU lack that functionality). But by that point it's on a whole different category of product imho.

@@KyleRuggles To be fair though, the Steam Deck has far better battery life than people make it out to be. I get around 5-8.5 hours running X360-era games, 2D games, indie games and emulation. I would consider that being seriously impressive for such a device... But yeah, if you're just playing on the couch. Streaming is a VERY viable option. :)
As always great review and comparison. You are my go to for Intel on devices these days and I decided to purchase the Neo 2. Most of these windows handhelds are planned for selling a big batch to fans who follow them, then move on to the next model. For example, this Ayaneo Geek device cost only $749 for people who order it within the first 3 weeks of its release, and that's pretty much 90% of their customers who would buy this device at the end. I personally ordered my geek through an agent in China for around $620 USD, but plus shipping it will be about $690

IMO from this video some companies nail the analogs and others nail the shoulder buttons, still waiting on a perfect combo from a future handheld. Thank you for the easiest way to describe a d-pad
2-4 hours was around the battery life of the original Nintendo Switch, so I think as the chips get newer and more efficient we will see whether these companies decide to go for more performance at the same TDP or the same performance with better battery life (the 2019 Switch revision boosted battery life to 4-9 hours just by using a more efficient chip). Though I believe that decision will largely be left to the user as they can chose what TDP and battery life they want which is a huge advantage in my view.
I'm really looking forward to the Next 2. They borrowed a lot of proven success from the Steamdeck but with so much more power and should just chew up anything that's thrown at it that isn't emulator compatibility code related. I hope Ayaneo listens to you and implements glossy buttons. As always thanks for your reviews.
On the question of my tipping point for another x86 handheld (since you asked)... I currently have the Win600 and like it a lot. I just finished a full playthrough of Persona 4 PS2 on it, and no complaints over that 80 hours of Batocera. I will probably wait until next year to consider something else. We should be getting Ryzen 7 7740 or 7840 processors that will be even better than the 6800u. That depends on self control though. The 2023 handheld I'm the most enamored by is the GPD Win 4. The overall design I just think is really cool. But if I am going to buy that I'd probably sell my Odin Pro first while it's still got some mindshare, because I never use it. So 70% chance I'll wait until 2024 for another x86 handheld, 30% chance I'll experience a lapse of self control and order a GPD Win 4.
It looks fantastic, and the early bird price was actually very reasonable and attractive. That said, I think I am still looking for a Steam Deck this year to fill the gap between my RP3+ and my PC. For high demand, quick-controllinh and long-playing games like Cyberpunk or Destiny 2, I prefer to use my main PC, but streaming indie games and some mid-tier games I already own on the smaller RP3+ screen is only fun for so long. I think the Deck is still hard to beat at $400, with upscaled PS2, GC and Wii U emulation to boot..
You can't game on 400$ steam deck, people will always swap the 2230 ssd with a bigger one plus add in a sd card, which is not cheap either. Stop saying it's 400$ when in reality you have to pay more than that for other essential add-ons.
@@chunlin173 You can absolutely put 64gb of PC or emulated games on it, plus stream from your main PC with Steam Link. That's a decent amount of emulated PS2/Gamecube games, plenty of indie games, and a large title that you can play anywhere, plus more if streaming over wifi. I'd say you can absolutely game on it for the listed price. I also have a microSD compatible with it, so again, no further cost, for me at least. Even if I upgraded, bringing the total to about 500, the basis of my comment doesn't change - still cheaper, still fills the gap, and nothing will replace my PC for intense gaming. I think 5:30 really depends on which games you play. Try playing FFXIV Online with a vertically aligned controller, it's extremely awkward and uncomfortable for longer than 10 minutes (of course, this also varies from person to person). It also bothers me that even when they offset the controls, the offset isn't the same on both side (center of joystick & center of D-pad vs. center of joystick & center of face buttons aren't the same X-axis distance)
I play a quite unknown game called "Solace Crafting" and the steam deck with its extra input options is very useful! I have the right track pad set as quick action keys (for skills) and the back paddles assigned to "jump" and "map". Those are missing from other handled.
You could always get a Sopi skin if the smudgieness bugs you. I have a geek coming and I plan on doing that. Love AyaNeo products and have a good experience with them as a company.
I don't actually have a handheld console and I've been watching your videos recently which made really want to have one just because of the way you describe and review them. I came here because I am getting this for 400 second hand on Facebook and boy I can’t wait to tinker I have an ally and a steam deck but for the price I couldn’t say no
On the "pressing start button" after switching the resolution, I've found that "holding the start button" is what actually works. Probably a translation error?
Real-World Battery Life ficou incrível!!! Tempo de Overnight discharging, games de referência! Simplesmente um review incrível para tomada de decisão de compra do console☺️!
I'm starting to really worry about the promised 6600U handhelds, which is what I thought the Geek was supposed to be when they originally announced it.
Can you hook 2 monitors on this device? Is that possible? Seriously considering replacing my work desktop with this, just so I can take a work-vacation with my family. I'm a big fan, by the way. Grew up in a 3rd world country where emulation and jailbreaking stuff was the most accessible way to play games.
Yes, this is about 25-30% more powerful than the Steam Deck. That being said, the SD is better at saving battery at lower TDPs than other handhelds, and so when playing less-demanding titles you will get more efficient battery life on the Deck.
Dig it! I'm gonna wait, to have such a big device with such a low battery life where I can expect the most 4.5 hours.. Not now. Since I play mostly at home. I just stream these games to my Odin using Castor and get a good 8h+ of battery.
The Aya Neo 2 devices in particular do not work for a lot of people because of the SSDs! Not only with the 2 terabytes! As a precaution, I installed a 2 terabyte Samsung 970 Evo Plus in mine and I am now reassured that nothing can happen there! With the factory-installed Cong SSD, I had a stomach ache!
As a Mac user, I am having trouble deciding if the Linux steam deck is going to fall short as a PC desktop option. It seems like running windows would be a large advantage to some of the more expensive handhelds but all the reviews I watch seem to come from the perspective of seasoned PC gamers that already have a pc setup. I just wanna play some computer games lol.
You need Windows only for some esports titles like Counter Strike or FIFA; they require it for anti-cheat and copy protection. In principle all other games will work the same on Linux.
they already have a oled aya neo air and they already announced aya neo pocket air which will be oled with a 6800u chip like this one so thats the handheld to get
I just went through the HoloISO changelog and unfortunately it doesn't seem like they've implemented power profile controls yet, and so I'm not sure how well battery life would be without the ability to tweak the TDP, refresh rate, etc. I can't wait for an official SteamOS release from Valve, I think it's going to shake things up quite a bit!
So far there has not been any sighting of the 800p Aya Neo Geek. I wonder why. All these reviewers have the 1200p version of the Geek which is pretty much like the AyanNeo 2.
As for now, the steam deck is great for the price it at rn, fully upgradable, but hopefully we can see more powerful devices from ayaneo in the near future, once I graduate and get a job
They release ca. 3 new devices a year, so you will see plenty new ones! The audience for such a device is pretty small as well, I think they sell ca 2000 units of each device.
Hey Russ, thanks for all the great videos. 👍 I went with the Ayaneo 2 based on your review and really loving the device. Still having issues with controller priority when docked, though. Wondering if you can suggest some software that will help with this. JoyXoff is being flagged at having a Trojan in it so not sure what else I should be using? Let me know what you suggest. Thanks again. 😊
Do you plan on reviewing the beelink ser6? It has the same chip as the Ayaneo 2/Geek but I’m curious how they perform against each other with the different form factors and also your thoughts on using a mini PC vs handheld if performance is equal. Thank you for your videos!
I don't believe in paying almost the same price as an actual decent gaming laptop or great gaming pc for an handheld pc. I think steam hit the target in terms of price range.
@@crestofhonor2349 Ahhh, I'm sure the colors will be really nice. They should make it an OLED since it's an 800p screen, the battery life will also most likely be a good 1-2 hrs extra. I agree I would also like to see how it compares to the original Geek.
I feel that once we get into PS2 and above territory, I want to play on a big screen TV instead of on a portable screen. I like that the dock allows for that, but at that price point, I might as well get a laptop, and then buy a cheaper handheld for anything below PS2.
Really depends on the type of game you want to play. Let's take Xbox 360/PS3 as an example. If I like Mario Sunshine or Zelda Ocarina of Time on a handheld. Why not Kameo or Ratchet and Clank PS3 games? Same if I play Marvel Vs Campcom 2 on handheld. MVC3 or games like Mk11 and SFV might be fun as well on handheld.
I'm just amazed at how many ridiculous different options they have for every single different version of every different model they launch every 2 months and then different versions launch to different people ordered at different times and we're surprised with different configurations for different reasons at different pricepoints...
Hi i have an issue with citra and 3ds games. I have ayaneo geek with ayaspace 2. I don't succed to use gyroscope. Do you know where is this settings ? Thanks for your help.
soundtap is not published yet? I'M 95% sure there is a toggle in ayaspace to "transform" sound to vibration. I do use it for emulation on older system and it does vibrate based on sound, I think
As a fan of the Vita, The GDP Win 4 looks sexy af, but I'm also keen on the Pimax Portal. Two different operating systems, completely different feature set. Which would you say is the better investment?
My tipping point is a stable price at around 750 to 800 with transparent purple or other transparent colors permanently available, and if they could collaborate with steam to maybe just have proton on the device as the os. Maybe this is a bit too pie in the sky, but for me that's what will do it.
@@inconspicuousalien519 i mean you can literally use whatever os you want on steam deck or this thing and most other handhelds besides nintendos that has been true forever basically ...aya neo need to drop their insane margins or atleast drop the price after 6 months and let the die hards keep buying for their insane markups
@@samgoff5289 You're assuming all of these devices are unlocked and can boot desktop Linux. That's a big assumption. The Aya Neo Air for example is completely locked down. It can only run the stock Windows, or any other OS that someone goes to a significant amount of work to hack onto it.
@@harleyn3089 so you first say I am wrong and use the aya air as an example being completely locked down...and then go on to admit you can use any other os on the air right after. 🤷♂️
Tbh i wan to buy it this year, since it's way cheaper now in my country. Can you give us insight of how this device now after one year reviewing this unit? Thank you
Even though OneX has better software and GPD has a pull out keyboard, I will say that if I were to buy any of these x86 handheld gaming computers, it would either be from Valve or Ayaneo for one reason. They both have good track records for service when things go wrong, and GPD and OneX have some pretty horrible reports about a lack of communication for months at a time and holding hardware for repair for over 8 months. EDIT: Forgot to mention that I did buy a Steam Deck but if I had the extra money these new Ayaneo devices definitely seem worth it and I would have picked one of those up instead. Unless you just really want those track pads or need to save a few hundred dollars, I would say the Ayaneo Geek or Ayaneo 2 is the way to go.
I know these machines are getting better and better,. However, I still say that the Steam Deck is the most affordable handleheld. I wish these would drop in pricing. Would like to have a native windows based handheld unit.
The SteamDeck is important, even if you don’t get one. It is stetting a bar for performance requirements and controls on a handheld PC. Not because it is first, but because it is popular. As for Windows support, the SD does that reasonably well, though I am having sleep/hibernation issues with the current drivers. SD has demonstrated to me that SteamOS is amazing. So much so, that support for it is a key feature for me when considering other option hardware options. The only reason I setup Windows was to get GamePass installed.
@@robbates4704 You can download gamepass on the SD. I checked out some youtube channels that can walk you through it. It runs well. I really would like Windows mainly to run COD. But I am sure at some point SD will figure out a way to run it effectively without windows.
@@BobBradford AFAIK, streaming is the only way to run on Steam OS. GamePass is tied to the MS store and would be very hard to port without MS assistance. I have SD card that I can boot to Windows and run Game Pass native for now. Not ideal, but it works.
I have a steam deck. I have no interest in portable unless it is hand over fist better battery life. Because the performance in the games I care about is great.
Question: With windows based machines like this do old windows games like Outlaws run on it? I can't get the game to work on the Steam Deck but I'm thinking my next device will probably be a windows device, I know I can put windows on the Steam Deck but I hear it's not too great an experience.
Sure, older games like that will play just fine on this, just like any other Windows machine. In fact Outlaws is available on Steam and GOG, so you have a choice of launchers for it. The Steam Deck does great with compatibility but it'll be a while (if ever) before the vast majority of games will work as well as they do in Windows.
@@RetroGameCorps Thank you for the reply. I miss and love those old windows games. That’s awesome and with this I can run the steam OS and get the best of both worlds. I see. That’s my only gripe with Steam Deck is Windows compatibility. Thanks for your time 🙂 I just might look into getting this 👀
Sure, there are a few now. The Anbernic RG503 and RG505 devices have the PS Vita OLED panel in them, and the AYANEO Air models have a 1080p OLED panel as well. The upcoming Pimax Portal will also have a QLED option.
I really like the form factor, power, and ports. I have a steam deck that I like but man I wish it had a second usb c so I could use my nreal while I charge it. Also I just don’t like the location of the buttons no matter how long I use it. I just feel like ayaneo will release something even better as soon as I buy the geek or the Steam Deck 2 is just a year or so away. I don’t know. The steam deck everything I need it to so while I want to buy the Geek I really don’t need it.

Just ordered a one player 2 thank to your reviews if you can do some more on that product that would be great!
Waiting patiently for your gpd win 4 review 😬
Thanks for the Video
Can you hook 2 monitors on this device? Is that possible? Seriously considering replacing my work desktop with this, just so I can take a work-vacation with my family. I'm a big fan, by the way. Grew up in a 3rd world country where emulation and jailbreaking stuff was the most accessible way to play games.
"shoryukenable" is the perfect word to approve a D-pad, thank you!
Thanks for the review. Stupid question : is it more powerful than a steamdeck ???
Yes, this is about 25-30% more powerful than the Steam Deck. That being said, the SD is better at saving battery at lower TDPs than other handhelds, and so when playing less-demanding titles you will get more efficient battery life on the Deck.
@@RetroGameCorps thanks you.. you r the best. I m French I certainly miss the information. Your videos are always great.
@@RetroGameCorps hi 👋 sorry to annoy you .. but did you ask me to telegram you ? Because it s said my message was sélectionned
@@doxdox54 hi, sorry that was a scam reply, please ignore it.
Good vid. Really wanna know if you would buy either or ?
Dig it!
I'm gonna wait, to have such a big device with such a low battery life where I can expect the most 4.5 hours.. Not now. Since I play mostly at home.
I just stream these games to my Odin using Castor and get a good 8h+ of battery.
The power adapter you held up is for us Australians.
@@goekhanbag uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh CS:GO is literally a Valve title. It’s a native steamdeck game.
@@XfarglesX
Of course you’re right. I mixed it up with another fps title but don’t even remember which one now because I don’t play any fps games.
@@goekhanbag probably Valorant. It’s similar but their anti cheat doesn’t work on the deck.
You're supposed to use shoulder buttons in Wipeout for faster turns.
Walter, I've been playing this game wrong for 20 years now! Let me be bad at it! :D
Ahh I love my AN2021 but this is beyond awesome. Maybe I’ll wait for AYANEO OLED. Some day.
they already have a oled aya neo air and they already announced aya neo pocket air which will be oled with a 6800u chip like this one so thats the handheld to get
I wish somehow one of these pocket PCs could both fit in my work vest and not cause bankruptcy. Until then, basically free Vita it is 🤔👌
GPD Win 4?
@@Berd95 Definitely doesn't fit the "doesn't cause bankruptcy" part.
Pulls out the Aus/NZ plug: "I think this is from Antarctica"
😅 shit, we ain't thaaat far south
Great to hear the ship up Antarctica
Nice and sunny in Antarctica today22c no snow in site..🤔😀
It would be interesting to see SteamOS running on the Geek. I suspect battery life would be better, mostly because the management options are better.
Could you do a review on Nreal air glasses and handheld devices
So far there has not been any sighting of the 800p Aya Neo Geek. I wonder why. All these reviewers have the 1200p version of the Geek which is pretty much like the AyanNeo 2.
Loved the CRT with Celeste on it. Got the idea from Wulff Den?
I think steam hit the target in terms of price range.
dont worry you are not the target market of aya neo 😂
Man none of the reviewers got the 800p screen which sucks because I wanted to see it in action
Probably they made a total of 4 devices and just waiting for the indiegogo money to roll in build a factory and start to manufacture them
What are you looking for exactly on the 800p version? Screen color or htz?
@@4G3NTOR4NG3 Color accuracy and battery life
@@crestofhonor2349 Ahhh, I'm sure the colors will be really nice.
I'm just amazed at how many ridiculous different options they have for every single different version of every different model they launch every 2 months and then different versions launch to different people ordered at different times and we're surprised with different configurations for different reasons at different pricepoints...
the digital sticks and d pad remind me of the logitich g cloud device.
Thank you for your efforts sir, my question is does ayaneo run windows by default?
Hi i have an issue with citra and 3ds games. I have ayaneo geek with ayaspace 2. I don't succed to use gyroscope. Do you know where is this settings ? Thanks for your help.
soundtap is not published yet? I'M 95% sure there is a toggle in ayaspace to "transform" sound to vibration. I do use it for emulation on older system and it does vibrate based on sound, I think
"Lets get into it" should always be your intro before someone else takes it.
As a fan of the Vita, The GDP Win 4 looks sexy af, but I'm also keen on the Pimax Portal. Two different operating systems, completely different feature set. Which would you say is the better investment?
the win 4. pimax portal is primarily a vr headset. all you will get to play is android games and emulators.
My tipping point is a stable price at around 750 to 800 with transparent purple or other transparent colors permanently available, and if they could collaborate with steam to maybe just have proton on the device as the os. Maybe this is a bit too pie in the sky, but for me that's what will do it.
They don't need steam to have proton as the os anyone can use Linux
@@samgoff5289 well that's a start...
The starting price for the AyaNeo 2 is $1,000. The starting price for the Ayaneo Geek 1200p is $1,000. Where is the lower price?
That so-called "stable 30 frames per second" footage for Uncharted 4 very evidently had horrendously poor frame pacing.
Also the next ayaneo device is gonna have track pad (its after this one)
@@feetenthusiast1015 oooohh that will definitely make windows less of a chore
Any chance you can do a comparison with the onexplayer mini and the aya neo 2? I’m so torn between the two
I know these machines are getting better and better,.
I look forward see videos on handhelds until I see them be overprice my excitement goes down fast
Would something like shadowplay or Medal TV work on a handheld like this? It'd be perfect if I could do 30 second clips for any game I'm playing
What kind of monitor are you using?
I have a steam deck. I have no interest in portable unless it is hand over fist better battery life. Because the performance in the games I care about is great.
HONEY WAKE UP RUSS JUST DROPPED A NEW VIDEO
40 hours at 33 watts, well you had me....:).
Have nice week.
Thanks for your time 🙂 I just might look into getting this 👀
$1,200-$900 is budget priced when Steam is around $400???
Steam suck tho
I'm just about to order the dock for the Geek I've ordered, is it that good?
I love it, it works well and the port is adjustable so you can use it with various devices.
Can you use the ayaneo devices as an actual computer as in use windows?
Hey RGC. Do you know of a recent handheld that has a OLED display (Minus Switch/Vita--Looking for emulation)
Sure, there are a few now. The Anbernic RG503 and RG505 devices have the PS Vita OLED panel in them, and the AYANEO Air models have a 1080p OLED panel as well. The upcoming Pimax Portal will also have a QLED option.
Screen is native vertical? Did it come from like, a Galaxy Tab or something? I wonder
Ryzen mobile 7K series introduced, this project should evolve on the go…
🔥🔥🔥
800p screen for how much? Oof.
I wish they would have put back buttons on it.
$4k for that one day away from being an obsolete door jam! I'll stream on a potato instead.
Shame you couldn't test the 800p version, i strugle to chose between the two 😔
😊😊👍👍
Please install cru and change refresh rate to 30hz to make that 30 fps a lot smoother.
Highly impressed with my neo 2
trying to figure out if i should get the Ayaneo 2 or the GPD win 4
Wait for the ayaneo 3 in april
