Fun fact: James stated on his Cali Death Podcast episode that while he's known for the BC Rich during his Obituary stint, he actually recorded the Cause of Death solos on a Charvel lent to him by Mike Davis from Nocturnus
James is sooooo underrated. Huge influence on a lot of extreme metal players....me included! World love to hear some New music from him. His playing is melodic....shred with class.....amazing tone and all of his solos are memorable and original.
What a nice surprise finding this video. Terrific! Hearing Murphy's solos on the Spiritual Healing casette in March 1990 truly changed my life, and I hadn't even started playing guitar until a year later. His vibrato, phrasing, pick attack, legato...all without equal. He's been my favorite lead guitarist ever since. Even talked on the phone with him about 3 or 4 times.
This is amazing! I know James personally and he’s one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. And he is an absolute legend and insanely talented musician, songwriter and producer. I’ve also played guitar with him and it’s a memory that will live with me forever. It’s amazing to see all the amazing words and love being sent James’s way:.
James is a straight up legend. So glad he made it through the cancer scare back in the day. His lesser known stuff on Roadrunner United and World Under Blood’s Tactical is killer. Also, I’d love to see a 3 licks episode on any of the other Death guitarists. There’s so many cool jazz and fusion inspired ideas between Paul, Bobby, and Ralph (RIP)
Oh Yeah, you did a James Murphy lesson, awesome David, thank you!! And you included that tapping lick from Turned Inside Out which is one of my fav James Murphy licks, just learned it recently and man is it fun to play!
James is one of the all time greats. His contributions to metal are substantial. His punishing riffs and shreddy melodic solos are second to none. Love the darker and groovier era of TestAmenT.
Saw the Murph man with Cancer, Disincarnate and w/Teatament. Great dynamic player and an Icon for many of us noodlers. Thanks for all covering a great group of Metal guitarist this month. Keep em comin
Thank you for this lesson. I'm a huge fan of James Murphy. Spiritual Healing and Cause of Death came out when I was in highschool. His playing on those two albums changed how I played and how my band sounded. You could play melodic shred in death metal. No longer were we just ripping off Death and Possessed. Now we could rip off Racer X and Yngwie too! I'll never forget my bass player saying "You can't play that that's Cause of Death dude" hahahaha. Anyway I love his playing and Disincarnate. If anyone is interested he was a guest on the Cali Death Metal podcast not too long ago.
That tapping lick sounds like a variant of the "spiritual healing" tapping lick almost. That is the album James played on in death. Love his solos on that album.
Good morning James. Putting myself in your shoes, itt must be quite an experience to find a video of someone as amazing as David Brewster, who broke down and studied isolated licks from concerts you performed at, that are that old, and share the tutorial with the world as a lesson to explore and improve. The honor is all yours. Keep Shining.
I don't know if you have ever posted or considered, but could you do a "Chordplay" video for Vinnie Vincent? He is one of my favorite songwriters from the 80's. He was absolute over the top gunslinger guitar player, but he was brilliant.
great channel!! Do you accept video requests? how about one with licks from Lars Johansson from candlemass and another with mike wead - (Memento Mori / king diamond / mercyful fate)

More James Murphy, please! Thank you David!
Yes, more James Murphy!
Disincarnate was so heavy for that time, these days I can only listen in small doses, I still have fun grinding out those sick sounding riffs
I use so many James Murphy licks, and I kind of pick like him and use the same picking patterns.
Awesome! Spiritual Healing and Cause of Death are among my favorite albums because of him.
James is sooooo underrated. Huge influence on a lot of extreme metal players....me included! World love to hear some New music from him. His playing is melodic....shred with class.....amazing tone and all of his solos are memorable and original.
James Murphy rulz🤘🏻🤘🏻everything he touches is golden imo !
Huge fan of James Murphy! I loved his solo from “Within the Mind” from Death’s Spiritual Healing. Thanks David! 🤟

Awesome James Murphy is a pal of mine he will appreciate this!
Another great choice for Metal Month thanks David cool friend of yours as well 👍🤘🔥
This is great! I saw James with Obituary live in ‘91 with Sadus and Sepultura. Been a death metal fan for over 30 years, thanks for this!

I played the Disincarnate cassette until it broke. I loved that album.
I bought it when it came out and still listen to it on a regular basis
wowwwww man.. james murphy from 1990 the best epoca 🤘
Awesome. James’ solos are menacing yet beautiful, and he makes any album he plays on better. Great job David!
I remember when James Murphy had a section in Guitar Player magazine. It was too short lived!
Love that guitarist, he posted about my band on facebook once. Big life moment lol
I got to see Obituary one time with James on guitar at the Country club in Reseda California. Very awesome guitarist and one of my favorites.
Saw the Murph man with Cancer, Disincarnate and w/Teatament. Great dynamic player and an Icon for many of us noodlers. Thanks for all covering a great group of Metal guitarist this month. Keep em comin
His guitar work in Disincarnate is the some of the greatest playing in death metal ever. Also, the stuff he did on Testament's Low album was killer.
Great lesson Dave !
Wow
I used to listen to obituary back in the 90's
James is a killer guitarist and totally underrated
His work on Testament Low is awesome
Another cool lesson!
James is a house hold name here in Lakeland FL

Great lesson. Don’t forget James played on Testament’s “The Gathering”, an underrated album.
another great surprise...really appreciate this lesson (perhaps you could cover Trey Azagthoth one day)
Man Murphey has some of the most evil solos I love it 🤘
My immediate thought on hearing that first like was "that sounds like a Randy Rhoads lick". Guess Dave and I were thinking alike.
Awesome job David!! 👻👻🎃🎃💀💀
James is one of my favorite guitarists, he's a monster, and has such a unique style. Thanks Dave.
That first lick reminds me the intro to Battery.
Death Metal Pioneer Lesson!!!! Thanks, David! Great Metal Month!
Murphy is a sick player! Btw Chuck's last name is pronounced Shul-deener
Hasn't he recorded the Testament record : The Gathering ?
yes 👍
Good morning James.

🤘🏻🤘🏻
He played in about 4 or more metal bands
Michael Denner next!

Could you look at licks from Alan Murphy who played with Go West plus a lot of session work
great channel!! Do you accept video requests? how about one with licks from Lars Johansson from candlemass and another with mike wead - (Memento Mori / king diamond / mercyful fate)
Van Halen incorporated in 2/3 of these licks
Disincarnate!
really nice guitar, is it custom ?
Tabs?
