Good points on etiquette and common sense courtesy often lacking or forgotten on trail. One additional thought I might add is to put a small stick in the cat-hole to alert others that this particular spot has been used. Thanks again Roadrunner for helping remind us of ways we can be respectful so all hikers can enjoy this outdoor adventure. - Jiffy Pop

Hi HikerDancer - Another great video! All great points and all are common sense. But I think that common sense is an art long forgotten. Thank you for reminding us all. SImple things like the red light and not talking load on the phone late. Love your sense of humor, your smile, and all your advice. Please keep the videos coming, because you really do have a great way of presenting information.

When I want to pass a hiker I say, “Good Morning!”, or “Good Afternoon!”, and I try to offer a compliment, like, “You are doing a great job!”. Then I simply ask, “May I pass?” It works well, except if both of their ears are stuffed with AirPods and their music is up so high that I can hear it! Then I have to think of a visual strategy like lobbing a pine cone or rock over their head and onto the trail in front of them to get their attention.

Awesome Etiquette video. Enjoyed your livestream last night! You did a fantastic job of keeping up and responding to posts without getting bogged down. I've seen some people get very lost and off the grid. So, good job!! Also, I don't own any pigs (just wanted to see your response to my "walking the pigs") ... lol, sorry, I am a little devilish at times! Your response was great though "I want to see you walking those pigs (or something like that!). I do however own 2 cats. No walking required, just lots of attention. Badbathikes is my favorite this year. You do need to check out "Old Man on the At" from last year. He put in serious mileage, was serious yet had a great sense of humor and offered interesting comments and refection without too much self indulgence. I cried like a baby when both of you finished .... well I cried when every through hiker finished last year but a few more tears with you and Groceries and Energizer (Old Man on the AT). Still looking for more 2023 hikers to follow all the way this year. Anyway ....cheers and thanks again for keeping the videos coming!! Looking forward to your next hike~~!

Where I live it is: Horses > up-hill hiker > down-hill hiker > mountain bike. Unless it is the wilderness, and then wheeled vehicles not allowed.
Not sure I agree about hiker midnight. That is kind of a new thing. Long tradition of sitting around the campfire singing and telling stories late into the night. Of course, folks that stay up late pay the price when the early birds break camp.
Agree with the rest of your comments. I do see men and women both pee on the trail (or just off the track). I'm not so bothered by that if you keep it away from the water. But if you do #2 dig a deep hole away from the water and the trail and take your wipe with you (unless it was a rock).

Quiet hours are not new. If you’re sharing a camping area with others, it is common courtesy to keep noise to a minimum. Others may have a long hike ahead and need their rest. Some folks think they can go wild because they’re out in the woods. The National Park Service says 10pm- 6am is the norm. Campers who break camp before 6am should likewise keep the noise down. Again - common courtesy.

    • @hikingdancer
      @hikingdancer  Рік тому +2

Maybe the long tradition of sitting around campfires singing and telling stories would be when you don’t share the space with other hikers. Sure, do your thing when you are by yourself and Stealth camping, but as soon as a hiker shares a space they should be considerate and respect hiker midnight.

IMO generally just stop and let anyone pass you or move over and give them room in all cases. No confusion. General politeness.
As far as when to "be quiet". I think once the sun starts to set, cut all the noise, any loud talking, have your gear setup and any noisy movement to a minimum. Unless you just know there is definitely no one that is getting ready to hit the sack.
Having stayed in many hostels: snorers - work that crap out before you hike and sleep around other people. Seriously. I won't even be polite about this one. I get it, you have a condition but that shouldn't be ANYONE else's problem. That's your problem. Don't make it our problem.

I can’t get over how some people won’t survive without their phones! When I go for a walk on the local trails I see many people yakking away non-stop, even if I pass them again like a half hour later! Why not just stay home? 😮😡 Most people go there for the peaceful atmosphere, NOT to hear some loud (they always yell into their phone) and obnoxious conversation. 🙄

That’s asking a lot Juliane. We can’t even get people to use rest areas on our highways. How many times have you seen some guy pulled over on the Interstate in broad daylight relieving himself. Another etiquette is enjoying the sacredness of a mountain summit quietly and not talking away for a half hour with your friends while others just want to take in the beauty. Love your videos.

There are no rules in nature. Anything goes. If I wanted “etiquette”, I’d go to a 19th C British tea party. Hiking is a nice reminder that we are part of a wider universe. We are animals. There are no “permits” or laws or rules. We are animals and free. Free to fall to our deaths, starve, dehydrate. Find a lover. Or an enemy. We are social animals, to be sure, but our species is characterized by diversity. Customs of etiquette vary. Some places kiss-hello, others burp in public, some require women to cover most of their body and faces, others have entire families go to the beach naked together. But even though we all have a our cultural biases and norms, there is no “etiquette “ in nature, just humans clinging to Order, Control, Security. The bears don’t care about your etiquette, neither do the rattlesnakes. You are an animal in denial of that fact.

The "rules" as they say on the trail pretty much boil down to keeping nature natural (and not looking like a city alley) and just treating other hikers the way you'd (likely) want them to treat you.

    • @RC-qf3mp

@@jesuschrist69 bs. There are no “rules”. You’re just making bs up as you go along. Just as Jesus did.
People on trail come from different parts of the country and world. On the trail, there are no rules. If you want to follow a make believe etiquette because it gives you a false sense of security, go ahead, knock yourself out. But there are … no … rules. You’re deceiving yourself.
