    29:44 - 37:07 Was absolutely asTOUNDing. The fact that she took the time to pause, simmer, and discuss everything with a breakdown of not only the story beats itself but the meta of the theme in general was a breath of fresh air. Same with 1:10:11 She clearly "gets" it and is obviously someone who can take a deep bite into a game or story and understand it on every level. If I was a developer, I would be begging her to be a VA in my next game. I sincerely hope someone from Santa Monica watches her stream and appreciates her ability to grasp characters to their core, and hires her to voice... someone - anyone - in the next game. She would bring so much to the table.

Thank you so much for going back to replay the whole game, I feel like not many people would have done this and the quality of the series benefited incredibly. It was fantastic to see your reactions and realisations of key story moments. I feel like your commentary and insights into the story and character relationships elevates your playthroughs above many of the others I've seen. The pay off in this series has been so worth it! Thank you.

    40:36 The mistletoe thing... that was just something really in Norse mythology as the one thing that could actually hurt Baldur.
    "Once upon a time Balder dreamed heavy dreams which seemed to forbode his death. Thereupon the gods held a council and resolved to make Balder secure against every danger. So the goddess Frigg took an oath from fire and water, iron and all metals, stones and earth, from trees, sicknesses and poisons, and from all four-footed beasts, birds and creeping things, that they would not hurt Balder. When this was done Balder was deemed invulnerable; so the gods amused themselves by setting him in their midst, while some shot at him, others hewed at him, and others threw stones at him. But whatever they did, nothing could hurt him; and at this they were all glad.
    “Only Loki, the mischief maker, was displeased, and he went in the guise of an old women to Frigg, who told him that the weapons of the gods could not hurt Balder, since she had made them all swear not to hurt him. Then Loki asked, ‘have all things sworn to spare Balder?’ She answered, ‘East of Valhalla grows a plant called mistletoe; it seemed to me too young to swear’. So Loki went and pulled the mistletoe and took it to the assembly of the gods. There he found the blind god Hother standing at the outside of the circle. Loki asked him, ‘Why do you not shoot at Balder?’ Hother answered, ‘Because I do not see where he stands; besides I have no weapon.’ Then said Loki, ‘Do like the rest and show Balder honour, as they all do. I will show you where he stands, and do you shoot at him with this twig.’ Hother took the mistletoe and threw it at Balder, as Loki directed him. The mistletoe struck Balder and pierced him through and through, and he fell down dead. For a while the gods stood speechless, then they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly"
    So yeah, if you make somebody invulnerable to damn near everything, but you forget to make him invulnerable to one single thing... well guess what? And as you saw from the ending, it makes PERFECT sense that Atreus was the one with the misletoe that hurt Baldur... because he IS Loki.
    Sony Santa Monica did their research well for the lore of this game, let me tell you!!

    RE: Mistletoe - there was a reason for specifically mistletoe! In the old tales, Freya didn't cast a specific spell to protect him. What she did was go around to all things in existence - plants, animals, earth, fire, steel, water - and made them all swear oaths that they would not harm him. And because Baldr was the Norse god of light and beauty and universally beloved they agreed...except for mistletoe. Mistletoe was too young to swear an oath, and so Freya didn't extract an oath from it - leaving it the one thing that could hurt Baldr.
    Its not an explanation that really works for the world of this game, and it shoudln't have kept them from coming up with some reason, but tehre you go.

    I think that your take on Kratos killing Baldur is the best take I've heard in all the playthrough videos that I've watched of GoW 2018. You're a smart person! It didn't even come across to me the way it did to you when I played it. I had a simple thought (and I'm pretending to be an intellectual personality lol) like : "Come on, Baldur is a f*cking douche & serves no purpose in the world except chaos and Freya is very useful with her spells and her role as the Witch of the Forest. There's no doubt that Kratos did the right thing". Then I realize now that all along there was a very deep philosophical meaning to this scene. Thank you very much for bringing this up!

  • @jaredberry4762
    @jaredberry4762 Рік тому +1

    The ending is such a brilliant twist, because even being moderately aware of the mythology might not be enough to clue you into what's really going on. It's so good because they never draw attention to it by directly calling it out, that is right until the very last moment. I hadn't connected the dots my first time playing through and then that scene hit and my jaw dropped.
    I even remember reaching a certain point in the game and wondering why Loki had never been mentioned. You'd think he'd pop up at some point with all the lore that Mimir is constantly dropping. But what Mimir's stories do inform the player of, and what the narrative as a whole is doing, is setting up the conflict between the Jotnar/Aesir/Vanir, and that despite Kratos' efforts to stay hidden he and his son are now central figures in it. That same network of conflicts is recontextualized from the myths ala the original GoW trilogy. The Aesir gods are now evil douchebags, and the Giants are now the underdogs that were preyed upon by them. So Loki is no longer a trickster, but a hero.

    Kratos has already walked the path that Baldur was walking (killing a parent responsible for their suffering) and he knows that doing so doesn't alleviate the hate and bitterness that they have towards the parent that wronged them.
    At this point in the game, Kratos still hasn't come to terms with the guilt he feels over killing his first wife and daughter, but he's trying with Atreus and by honoring Faye's wishes to spread her ashes on the highest point of all the realms. Faye, however, had ulterior motives behind that request, as can be seen when they find the murals in Jotunheim.
    All I can say after that is to play the sequel to learn more!

    On the mistletoe, I believe the way the story goes is that frigg/freya, upon baldurs birth, asked for all the things in all the realms to agree to do no harm to baldur. All agreed, from gods to trees to wind. All but one, mistletoe. It was too young and freya had to finish the spell. And thus mistletoe having not been able to tske the vow, remained the one thing that could harm baldur.

    Brings a smile to my face when listening to Briana think about why this or that happened in Norse mythology. Just to bring my 2 Norwegian cents to 3 matters of Norse mythology, so I hope you are reading this Briana.
    The builders history is somewhat correct, but the builders desire if he wins is Freyas hand in marriage along with the sun and moon.
    Balder was the beloved of all the gods, his name meaning either hero, lord, the light or shining one. Since he was so cheerished, the gods made everything in exsistence from plant, to beast to man to god, swear an oath that they will never hurt Balder. Everyone acquiesced except misteltoe. Then Loke came along and tragedy strikes.....
    And about Loke. Loke in game is incorrect in every narrative vis-a-vis the norse one. Yes, he is a jotun, and yes he is the trickster god, and yes he is the father of Hel, the Midgardsormr and Fenrir.

  • @danieldickson8591
    @danieldickson8591 Рік тому

    If you want to know about mistletoe, look up the actual myth of Baldur. There's a connection, but it doesn't apply to this interpretation of Norse myth. But those of us who knew the myth saw it coming a mile away.

  • @danieldickson8591
    @danieldickson8591 Рік тому

    It's worth noting that Freya never said to Baldur, "I'm sorry. I was wrong. It was my fault." She kept saying, "I made mistakes, but I was trying to protect you." She never really took responsibility for taking Baldur's choice from him, for hiding his cure for a hundred years. She still made excuses for herself. If she genuinely had apologized, maybe Baldur would have chosen differently. Or maybe not, we'll never know.

    LokI was like the father to the serpent so it made sense he could call it when they we were in danger from Freya crushing them. the endings is o emotional. Mimar did say something he said that the magics were different colors like it was green and the mistole toe had purple magic which i took to mean like opposing elements like ice vs fire, water vs lighting and such. He could have gone in to a bit more depth about it i agree but he didn't say nothing about it. Maybe the thought you could it out as when you were fighting Balder and you had to switch elements to do more damage. LIekj when he was fire an dash and lava you used your axe but when he was in ice mode you used your blades cause it looked to me like they had elemental properties.

    Also when Kratos Says “Cycle Ends here” is the same exact thing that Zeus said to Kratos in Gow2.

    In mithology, freya ask all the things in the world to do not harm ever baldr, but she skip asking the mistletoe because it was innofensive. In the game its a spell. I prefered the mimir explanation in this as a middle point. He know much things but he is not an expert in vanir magic... So he give the explanation he could.

    The cycle Kratos meant wasn't only about revenge. It's also the cycle of the gods, children killing their parents, which recurs in many mythologies particularly Greek. When Atreus asks, "Is this what it means to be a god?" is just what Zeus stated as a fact to Kratos.

    That mistletoe reasoning is definitely not glossed over if you know the actual mythology and how baldur died. I would HIGHLY suggest you to brush up some norse before starting ragnarok…
