OK so, FUN FACT
The reason Kratos breaks chests is because developers were asked about kratos' strength. They were asked how is it that he can throw giants and overpower titans but struggle to open a chest. The developers said something along the lines of "I don't know, it's just a game. Fine. We'll fix it." Now Kratos breaks chests. I think after 2 or 3 he stopped opening regular chests and started breaking them instead.
Yes though also Kratos' sole godly power is more subtle than it appears, which is 'always having the strength to overcome any obstacle', therefore his strength is potentially limitless provided anything is stupid enough to become Kratos' obstacle.

It's really nice watching someone playing this that doesn't know the backstory ahead of time, that's when you see how good the storytelling really is.
We'll find out! I know my playthrough will be unique in that way!
How does that improve the story telling? Shouldn’t knowing the backstory....heighten the story telling of this? Especially for certain things that happen.
its told in the story. If you already know all of his back story, it makes what happens later on less impactful because there are no surprises for the player
Actually you don't need to worry about that the game does a good job of explaining kratos past. So if you're new by late game you will get the giest of what happened also wether you're new or old you will still feel the impact for some scenes. But there is some surprises for the people that did play the old games.
That's subjective. They will hit differently. Moments that are hinted at for someone who knows the story will be one of excitement and even bewilderment while those who don't know the backstory are given mystery that pulls them deeper into the narrative to find out Kratos secret (because they are like Atreus-wanting to know what Kratos is hiding). However, both veteran and newbie are given the same level of anticipation of the upcoming moments and pieces of dialogue that keeps them engrossed in the game. That's good storytelling and game design. She'll be fine and it'll make her playthrough stand out from everyone else
I honestly think the scene of Atreus killing the deer is very well done. For a game that revolves around themes of slaughter, gore, and plenty of violence, the deer scene definitely shows the intensity and weight that comes with taking a life, human or not.

Well you get to see him from Atreus' perspective, not really sure what mysterious darkness is troubling Kratos and having the true nature of this grumpy old man slowly revealed to you.

@@Philweasel it's cool because it makes the earlier games more interesting because Kratos is full of mystery, he is a detailed accumulation of conflicting emotions and PTSD. His vague stories, wisdom, experience, cool head, and expressions make newcomers want to experience his story and past by playing the earlier games. They build anticipation throughout this game and get to immediately go on an other adventure playing the originals on PSN. Considering that this is a soft reboot to the God of War franchise it really is a perfect starting point, that's what they designed it to be intending to draw new fans rather than just long time veterans to the series like us. My friend never really liked the God of War Games but I made him play this one and he got addicted. As soon as he finished this one he binged all the games except Chains of Olympus oddly enough. lmao

But in the same time it is really interesting experience to uncover his story at the same time as the boy does. It gives you very different view on the game and the story this way.
On the other hand, there are tons of videos here on youtube that describe the story of Kratos from the beginning.

Bri's fight with the stranger is in contention for the greatest moment in SRG history. The fight had so much suspense and you can see how emotionally exhausted she was at the end of it. Not only because of the intensity of the fight, but also because of her geniune concern over Atreus. The moment gave me chills and her authentic reactions were so fun to watch and so memorable!
haven't watched it yet but, as good as that scene is, I can almost guarantee it won't be as good as her crying at the sam and henry scene, aswell as her monologue after.
Makes one wish she had a prior connection to God of War. Her reaction to the mid point of the story where Kratos has to unbury his past would have been interessting. All the people who were fans of the series beforehand went totally bonkers in that moment, including me.
Her face when she recalled the Leviathan Axe is priceless!!!! I like gamers who explore everything. I will definitely finish this series of yours!!!
A few years late to the party, but this game's story, design, and the music by Bear McCreary are just phenomenal. This game is truly the epitome of what games are meant to be. Journeys. And not just for the characters, but the players as well. Well done Santa Monica Studios and everyone involved on the project for the amazing accomplishment that is God Of War PS4. And here's to the upcoming Ragnarok game!

It is interesting to see newcomers to the series play and see the tragic story of kratos unfold slowly the truth shall come to light, even if they didn't touch on these points in this game it gives me hope for future gow games

Disagree. I think she made a HUGE mistake. How are you supposed to enjoy this story if you have no idea the tragedies that Kratos has lived through. There's so many callbacks in the dialogue for instance that are just going to go over her head & that's a shame because she's missing 75% of Kratos's story

One often overlooked fact is that whole speech from "the stranger" in this when he first meets kratos was all directed at Atraeus's mother, As someone who loves mythology and has always enjoyed Norse mythology I love the surprise about Atraeus's real name and how Baldr/Baldur's story is told for once. He's often left out of stories.. they always seem to center around Loki, Thor and Odin.
That honestly blew my mind when I heard it a second time after beating the game, because it makes perfect sense for him to be referring fo Kratos with his wording but the same is true for his wife since she's a giant.
Why are you spoiling the end of the game on the comments of the first part of a playthrough?

You need to be A LOT more proactive during fights in this game. Defending, backing up and throwing your axe all the time will get you nowhere other than the game over screen.
Actually, that's mainly what I did early-to-mid game on my first playthrough on Give me a Challenge. It works, just takes a "bit" longer, :P. Although I did start to lean more against an aggressive playstyle later in the game, especially once I got good runics.

I love that you actually review the game and talk about the components of it (like when you talked about the fact the tight squeezes are actually sneaky loading screens and atreuses vs Kresto's characteristics) instead of just playing the game and not taking the time to actually appreciate the game and acknowledge little details

Also, I love how you point out the amazing acting moments and your appreciation for it. 99% of players on youtube either can't notice it because of lack of depth, it goes over their head, or don't care.

Not gonna lie, this video came on my recommendations I was a little curious to see how this gameplay would be like for someone else who didn't know about the backstory, was surprised how casual and nice you are throughout and your story telling is quite beautiful for someone who didn't know about GoW definitely gonna subscribe

Their dedication to little details is really on a next level. I especially like how they've made sure to get the Norse mythology correct, too. For example, the big troll you fought had a name in the Old Norse language that means "Death Merchant"! It's stuff like this that makes being a nerd about mythology and language all the more satisfying.

Far better than most playthroughs i've seen. Most youtubers dont seem to acknowledge whats going on in the game world and to the viewer that can be kinda enraging, it's like an itch that doesn't get itched. You not only acknowledge and comment on those things but take it further by dropping little factoids and just generally pertinent information regarding what we are watching.
It sounds like something obvious, but it's often annoying watching youtubers just fly past things on playthroughs without so much as a goddamn flap of an eyelash.
Plus it felt like a fresh perspective because of the way you were seeing the game and story, even though i've completed the game and know it well I still found myself going "oh yeh, shes right, never thought of that" at times.
A solid 11 out of 7, would watch again

Okay tbh the fact that she doesn't throw the axe with R1 gets on my nerves a lot.
You should be more aggressive when fighting stuff, the fights don't have to be that long but since you're playing so passive they kinda are. It gets pretty boring watching someone hiding behind a shield or just throwing the axe from a mile away a hundred times. The stranger fight for example isn't even hard so there's no need to be so cautious. Also anyone reading don't take the comment as hate I'm just trying to give some constructive criticism on how to make the gameplay more enjoyable to watch.

Cory Barlog is a visionary. He wrote and directed God of War 2, the game previously hailed as the best in the series, and then came back to write and direct this game. He had a hand in most of the other games as well but when he's in charge, he creates masterpieces.

Boy oh boy, I think you're going to totally enjoy this! I think this game will do a good job explaining the back story without you playing the previous ones. Although I've played the previous ones, I was quite young and it's done a great job re-explaining. This is in fact my GOTY right now.

I’m still not over how insanely good this game is. I only had a distant understanding of God of War going in and I wasn’t sure how I felt about Kratos in Norse mythology and how that was going to work. The presentation in this game and the way the story unfolds is so spot on, it just blew my expectations out of the water. And hats off to Bri for getting through that entire boss fight without a scratch 👍 That’s SR Gaming at its finest. Keep up the good work.

It's not so interesting, because after that game you'll know pretty much about Kratos.
But this is one is much different. Still has flashes of the older games, but much dif gameplay feel.
Yes, this game deffers from previous ones, but when you see a flashbacks(or characters) of events from previous games. or when Kratos takes out a certain weapon... If you don't know the story behind all this, you just won't feel the Epic
yeah i still have all 6 of them on ps3 and do a marathon like once a year mabes. playing through all of them besides ascension. i found it interesting that ascension was the only gow that wasn't very good and the only one to have the same director, like breaking the new director for each game cycle cursed the game or something.
Vladimir T. Not true at all the older games were all about story and gameplay andpuzzles that was the standard set since God of War 1 the original 2005 game!! You absolutely have to go back to the original games to see how badass Kratos was he was a serious killer and was vicious as hell you get a sense of that from this new game but you have to go back to experience how amazing the fights were and how they pushed the PS2 technology to its limits.
I'm also impressed, as anyone who has seen or played this game, wow! Great video Bri and expression of exaclty what is concidered quality gaming we all enjoy. I have played the previous games; this is more than eye candy..It's more than creative, it's what we expect to play tomorrow, or next year. :- )
I have watched numerous amount of "Blind" and regular play-throughs of this game. I will have to say that Strange Rebel Gaming's "Blind" play-through is the best in my opinion. She makes hilarious facial Expressions and funny side comments throughout the whole series. She even gets grossed out from the blood and gore at first. other times she is very happy when an exciting event goes the way she wants it to. Her face also lights up when the Father and Son bond together. She is by far one of my very top favorite UA-camrs.
