The biggest lesson I learnt is you need to have a good instructor and enjoy their style of learning. My 1st instructor was incompetent, and had a very strange way of teaching and often used to make me feel on edge and uneasy. If you gut instinct says that you are not progressing with your driving then take the courage to find a new instructor. Have faith in yourself and be confident, and finally be proactive when learning how to drive. Good luck to those who are leaning, you CAN DO IT!

    • @ChrisAndCats
      @ChrisAndCats 2 роки тому +1

      Driving in the left to me makes more sense - not just because that's what I've learned/am used to, but because the majority of people are right handed, therefore it makes more sense to me for the driver to be on the right side of the vehicke, to hold the steering wheel with the dominant/right hand and change gear with the left, non dominant hand. Changing gear the other way round feels all kinds of wrong to me for that reason! With regards to roundabouts, they're pretty easy. You always give way to traffic from the right (unless they're traffic light controlled and say otherwise). Generally, you're in the left lane to turn left, left or middle lane where there is one for straight on, and right lane for turning right. Where there's a 2 lane approach and exit, you can follow round in both lanes.

      In this day and age with power steering I still don't understand the need to feed the wheel through your hands. That should have gone out with the ark. That was OK in the days when there was no power steering and you needed a bit of strength also the steering on a lot of old cars was worm gear rather than rack and pinion. I saw someone a few weeks back struggle to get round a corner because they were feeding the wheel through their hands. It looked like someone not long through their test. Clipped the kerb twice because of it too. I passed my test first time in 1975 and the first thing I did was drop the feed through the hands. No accidents and still have a clean licence.

Fine if you were a man and had the strength to feed the wheel through your hands as you were taught - much harder for small women like myself so as soon as I passed my test, the feeding went out the window and I crossed my hands. So much easier. Seems to be a relic from the past they've held on to. Remember when brakes weren't servo assisted? You literally had to jump on the brake pedal to do an emergency stop and if you had air in the system had to pump the brake pedal like mad. I once had total brake failure in a Morris Minor. Not something I'd like to repeat but no harm was done except I shook like a leaf for a while. I cringe when I think of the deathtraps I drove as a young driver but I'm still here to tell the tale.

    Surely it’s just common curtesy not to wear earphones in the presence of one other person.
    Especially when that person is driving instructor providing a free mock test for UA-cam pmsl

    Wish me good luck, I'm having a 1st try with state practical exam on Thursday. The only thing I have to focus on is observation, observation, and once more observation. If not the instructor I posed the danger to 10+ pedestrians over 30 hours of learning and probably 6 cars because of my wrong decision making (I've done decisions, but I've done wrong ones).
    Remember, I'm passing it in Poland because it's obvious, I'm a Pole. I hope I don't mess up, I want to surprise my mom.
    Btw British roundabouts infrastructure and streetlights positioning looks so odd... OK, in Poland it's not great either, but our infrastructure looks so intuitive...
    Edit: Hell yeah, passed the 1st time, but only because of good examiner. He stopped the car when I was about to hit a pole on the curve on manuevers square. Also he passed my parking despite it being not the best.
    Seriously, even infrastructure wanted to fail me. Construction sites, hedges and I was scared he'd count some actions (like left lane driving) as equivalents of British minor faults.

      You can but you would have to clutch all the way down before changing to 1st gear and you may have to slow down a bit depending on how fast you’re going because your car may be thrusted forward a bit if you’re going too fast for 1st gear

    I have no idea why it's still taught to learners to use the push-pull technique in all circumstances. I would never do that to do a U-turn at mini roundabout, hand over hand all day long. Sure, an examiner might have given her a minor but it's worth taking over a serious fault and failing for hitting the kerb. Just my opinion. 🤷‍♂️

      It's pull-push not push-pull which is important, and if done properly can be very efficient as you can quickly make full turns without noticeable pause either at the top or bottom of the steering wheel. Yes, hand over hand can be faster if done really quick, however if you don't have excellent dexterity there's risk of slipping wheel out of hands while you crossing them and losing control of the car.

    Why would you ask a learner driver to perform a U-turn on a mini-roundabout (a dangerous manoeuvre that the highway code recommends to avoid making)? Although it is not illegal, I don't think it is good judgement for you to be directing learners to complete this manoeuvre. It would have been safer to ask her to do a three-point-turn or a U-turn in a safer side road.

    • @mint_au

      i mean everyone will have to do it a somepoint or she shouldve payed more attention and not have her airpods in whilst on a mock test either way kinda disrespectful by not paying full attention. it falls into being her problem for taking the wrong exit in which she had to do that manouver and failed to complete it

      @@mint_au I feel as though you lack reading comprehension skills. Yes we may all have to do U-turns at some point but as mentioned above, U-turns at a mini roundabout should be avoided (you can’t argue with the Highway Code lol). It would’ve been better to do a U-turn at a normal roundabout or maybe traffic lights whereby it’s not illegal to do a U-turn orrr a 3-point turn would’ve been better. Also taking a wrong turn isn’t a minor or serious fault and I bet you weren’t an expert at following a sat nav when you first started learning either🤨
