If you going to discuss your take on events here, please be respectful of one another and try and take onboard what this video is about, we are communicating in an environment where we don't share or have an agreed upon set of facts. Social media has created bubbles of realities for each and every one, different sets of information we hold and events like this are showing the effects of that division. We need to reach out to one another and communicate with good intentions if we are to get to a better place than this. Thanks.

for instance, when innocent peaceful protesters where being assaulted by the police and someone justifies the violence with the argument that they've deserved it, and a similar thing happens to the other side, I can't stop myself from using their same response to them!
Mostly to prove how much anger we get when someone uses that argument against "my side"!
We are an emotionally driven beings and we lose our senses with reality when stuff like this happens.

I mean yeah, opening fire and gassing a crowd of protestors is certainly unjust and kinda violates what the US “advocates” for, but the storming of Capitol Hill is not even a comparable scenario. A few thousand people get together with guns and munitions to demonstrate at a legislative building and then breach barriers kinda get what’s coming to them, ngl. But what should have happened didn’t. A coup attempt was had on the American parliament and the disorganized militia was met with smiling faces and open arms rather than tactical gear and small arms. Handicapped and disabled individuals demonstrating in the exact same place were dragged by their arms, legs, and crutches because they were protesting the decisions made regarding healthcare.

Don't give your opinion on something unless asked, and be honest if they ask. If they give you some counterpoint, either tell them why you personally made the choice you made or tell them that you will look further into what they are saying. I think that one MAJOR problem that needs to be addressed is the lack of ability in the majority of people to really deal with information. They just dropped the internet in our laps and assumed that everyone would just use it, causing the world to flourish. What no one considered is that we now live in a time, where we have all the world's information in the palm of our hands on our phones, even. And most people don't have the tool kit to.. parse that information. Most people don't understand, for instance, "What is evidence.", "What is a good source of information, and what is a bad source?", "How can I tell the difference?", "What is cognitive bias, and what can I do to help eliminate mine when evaluating information, and sources of information?". These are things that are learned and require practice in order to learn. Right now, this stuff isn't even a bottom priority for our schools. And people really only get taught this stuff if they go into advanced college schooling, and even then, only in certain curriculum. With how much information is being dumped on us every day, this stuff is IMPORTANT to learn. The solution is to make this stuff a top priority for education, and they need to start YOUNG. Kids are using the internet at younger and younger ages. We need to teach these habits right from the start. With enough people out there with this critical thinking training, it will take a HUGE bite out of the vast numbers of people who are getting conned by conspiracy theories, and spreading them like damn viruses. This lack of the toolkit for critical thinking, and dealing with information, is one of the most major sources of the problems this country, and many others face.

I generally agree with the sentiment that we need to be able to communicate with each other better. However, a large part of society, at least in the United States, straight up believes in conspiracy theories. Myself and my father have spent our entire lives trying to have respectful conversations with his family, trying to get them to understand and respect our beliefs but they will have none of it. Many of them straight up believe in conspiracy theories. There is no avenue we have not attempted to use to reach some kind of understanding. We are not alone. Many, many people are the same way. And I would say people on one side of the political spectrum tend to be more likely to believe in conspiracy theories than the other. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe these people make up a small but vocal minority. But at least in the United States, we are at a point of great social unrest. It has been building slowly since pretty much around 9/11 I would say, but became much more noticeable during the Obama years, and much worse in the last 4 years or so. I would argue we have not been this divided as a society since before the American Civil War. Our leaders have been ineffective at best in dealing with this crisis, and recent leadership has actively made it worse, which I think is objective. The fact that Americans were not surprised by these events just goes to show you how bad things have become. And I hate to be pessimistic, but I don't know how things get better, to be honest. America has always had this culture of freedom of speech that has perpetuated problematic views. Even after the Civil War, an event that should have given southerners great shame in their past, they only embraced their ideology more, with the confederate battle flag being a normalized symbol of conservatism in contemporary society. We are so unbelievably far from normal, it's just really hard for me to see how we get back to a healthy society.

While I will immediately add I am left leaning, I would like to talk about conspiracy theories and such.
Those people who believe in conspiracy theories usually do so with such strong emotional connection that it is nearly impossible to convince them, since it will result in their entire past being wrong and they'll have to create a whole new view on said matter. That's why it is so hard.
Yes thry can believe in alien landings and such, but usually it's more than only that, and it goes to the root of how they see society. For example alien landings and covid-19 all come down to losing trust in the government for telling the truth. If you want to change that, you'll have to go for the root of these conspiracies and that will affect those peoples lives to the core.
Same with the confederate flag, thry believe st the core it stands for true values of their society, not for slavery, or racism. Even though that's what everyone else sees it for. It's a problem rooted deep in the mind of those people who either have lost faith or lost hope. This is why communication is important, but nearly impossible sometimes

Here's my perspective, for what little it is worth:
With all that has gone on the confidence in the democratic process is at a low point. I believe that is why the storming took place. I think there was a way to prevent this from occurring -> They should have let the voter fraud allegations be heard in court.
If you are R, and believe voter fraud: obviously happy to be heard.
If you are D, and don't believe voter fraud: happy that it can be finally put to bed.
    My biases:
English, live in UK. Drawn further right by polarisation, but generally centrist. Consume generally 'rightwing' media.
I feel that it looks dodgy that they wouldn't even hear the allegations. There were people who signed sworn affidavits who, if lying, should face repercussions for intentionally damaging the confidence in democracy. It makes it seem like the Democrats they have something to hide. If the allegations are as ridiculous as it's said to be then they should wilt under the scrutiny of a court. I think that Biden is corrupt enough to only care about winning. The way that Silicon Valley has reacted to this makes people like me feel like there might not be more chances to speak up.

As I watched the police officers holding the mob at bay, I thought of the families they left that morning. There is so much anger in the hearts of people. That display of violence was wrong. I think this goes beyond who the president is, or if the votes were messed with. People are angry in America, and instead of productively and peacefully talking about it, they destructively shout and resort to violence. It is sobering. Truth is so hard to find. He lost either way and to storm the capitol with the intention to hurt those who disagree with you isn’t okay. Stop pointing fingers because both sides were involved with cases of cheating. Shurikens Miner I agree, but intent matters, too. They are called domestic terrorists because they broke into our nation’s capitol and tried to disrupt democracy with the intent of hurting our country’s lawmakers. They said ‘heads on pikes’ and ‘hang mike pence’. It wasn’t harmless. It was shameful and damaging to the image and strength of America just as the blm riots were that got out of hand. But you cannot dent there wasn’t looting and rioting on the trump supporter’s side, too. The context is that they were at a Trump rally, all fired up, and told by their idol to ‘go to the capitol’ and ‘never concede’. If that isn’t war mongering, I don’t know what is. The media also portrayed the blm protests as heinous and critics had their share of opinions on it without censorship. The context for those riots, however, were over centuries of discrimination and racism. It’s not right, either way, but the intention of why each side first started the protest were completely different. There may be a double standard on how these two groups have been portrayed, but there is also a double standard on how they were dealt with, which is a whole other discussion. It’s disgusting all around

As a pole living in Poland I can tell you all that tribalism is absolutly insane. There are issues that are called rightwing or leftwing for eg. mail in voting or lockdowns and the crazy thing is that in another country like Poland righwingness or leftwingness of those issues is competly flipped. It really just shows that its not about any ideology or logic, its just "belonging" to a "tribe".
Another thing is that im really not found of Trump but man, it is obvious that this whole thing will just lead to more conflict or even civil war... Those people have real grievances you have to understand how it all looks from their perspective. They are being called all sorts of names by the media. The amount of censorship is insane. Media is even calling pewdiepie and enrice tario "white nationalist" and "nazi" and i have to add for those who dont know that enrice tario is a black man. Media and other personalities keep calling them studip, crazy, insane, conspiracy theoriests even your own audience is doing that :/. And sure some of them are but my parents and I arent even from USA and we think its crazy that voter turnout in some places was over 100% and whats more it was always in a swing state... There were some other things pointed out by trumpists and poeple like Matt Parker analysied that data and explained why its OK.

But they've been conditioned by biased media to believe that "the other" are all extremists. This is true and I'd normally agree with that, but if you were at a protest, and some of the protesters broke into the capitol, any logical person who did not support what was happening would leave.
If you continue to stay in a crowd of people who are committing sedition even after you've known that they are committing sedition, you are endorsing that behavior.

The blm protests, while some of them did turn violent, did not involve a mass of people attempting to overthrow a democratic process. The people at this protest who were still there, a whole 7 hours later, aware that people had raided Congress, aware that not just the mayor, not just biden, but Trump himself, had asked them to leave, and aware that they were violating a curfew, were endorsing what had happened.

See, the "hear out both sides" and so on approach is what I'd love to see as possible. But this only works if you assume good faith in politicians. Almost every Republican and almost every Democrat has nothing but their own career in mind, and these are the people who stir up this hatred. Because by opposing us against each other, they distract from genuine anger that their actions would cause if they weren't hidden by said opposition they create.
What the rioters did yesterday was absolutely terrible and cannot be defended. But they were led on to this by certain politicians (Trump, Cruz, Hawley) and those are the ones who started it all.

The only criticism I have is that one of the sides involved has mastered the art of using these polarizing media algorithms to their advantage. In my opinion, this side disproportionately benefits from extreme polarization and the misinformation strewn about their echo chambers.

"There are good people on both sides," is a memetic example. While I agree both sides are made entirely of people, I find the question of their goodness frankly irrelevant, and functionally a red herring.
My question is not whether the people on a given side are good, but whether the ideas are.
