In english literature we're studying the play Macbeth by Shakespeare. It has lots and lots of historical context which explains why it was written in that way, such as the nature of an Elizabethan woman being gentle and kind while men were fierce and in charge. We don't learn about it because that's what our society and beliefs should be, we learn about it to understand the historical context which explains why it was written in the way it was (and also cus we have to do Shakespeare but we dont talk about that)

However keep in mind that Shakespeare's work is not usually taught as it was either. It's been changed to be more acceptable for being shown to the demographic of teenagers and young adults (For example the scene with a drunkard who complains about not being able to get it up). Tor McLean is right in saying the demographic matters. Media effects how we formulate our ideas and expression, and not everyone is born the same, some children will be able to understand that the ideas are outdated and move on with broadened horizons, and some are going to be effected. If I told you that I'm growing an orchard of apples and only Some of them are poisoned, would you want to eat an apple from my orchard?

I think Disney actually did something right in this case, in some darkwing duck episodes, there are stereotypes involved, but instead of completely removing the episodes, they just put a warning at the start that says that there are stereotypes in the episode, so viewer discretion is advised. what I would do is just remember that they were different times, when that was the culture of the time. obviously what they are doing in that case might be wrong, but you can look at that and **know** that they are wrong, and discuss it with others instead of blocking it from your mind.

  • @wilson7351

I agree with the idea that some remakes of old shows/movies that are remade just to get a new, more diverse cast isn’t really a good thing. Sometimes. Sometimes, a remake can really work, but in that case I think more than just the cast would have to change. For instance, in the case of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, the directors and producers did change the designs and personalities of each character, but they also changed the plot points and overall story, the world (I think) and added more characters that worked with the situation. Personally, I think that remake was really great, but sometimes a remake like that doesn’t really work (like with the Ghostbuster movie) because they changed only a little bit of the original source material which made the movie seem really fake and done before.
So, if any film producers or directors are reading this, don’t create a remake of story that you liked, create your own film featuring the story’s you want to tell, rather than the stories that have already been told. (I think Molly Ostertag said something like that, or Noelle Stevenson I don’t remember.)

My problem with remakes with a cast consisting of minorities is that they are often being used as shields against criticism. For example, when people criticized the Star Wars sequels, Kathleen Kennedy wrote it off as sexists and racists who hated the movies solely because of the actors of the characters, and not because they were destroying the legacy of the previous movies and the characters lacked any development

Weren't selling very well, and B. Had asian racial stereotypes that didn't comply with the publishing company's values. There is a fine line to be careful of when keeping old and problematic movies/other media. It is absolutely valuable to keep them around in order to learn from them, but when viewed in the wrong context, the problematic aspects of a movies can come across as being a normal thing. If people go and watch lots of old movies without understanding the problems with them, then the outdated ideas within them will seem normal. When they come across modern films they could see something like more inclusivity as being "forced in" rather than just being totally normal.

A main protagonist can apply to anyone despite race and gender. its the character that matters and the meaning and lesson that shown in media. Yes some films like ghost-busters 2016 was bad not due to the female cast but its was a writing issue, the same with the charlies angles remake. making all of the females in that film generic and very feminist makes it hard to see any personality in their characters and journey.

When young children see racist imagery and see it being treated as normal and not questioned, they learn racism. That's a little bit true for adults as well, but the more educated and intelligent the person is, the more they are able to question and resist those things for themselves. It's a lot harder though if you've already absorbed years of it from a childhood steeped in it.

There is one term that I take issue with: "out-of-date" or "out-dated" ideas. Ideas like this (e.g. race, sex, religion, etc.) shouldn't be framed as being either outdated or current. The way I see it, either the idea is wrong or it's right, and that shouldn't change just because the earth went around the sun a few hundred times. Yes, society changes and what is acceptable to the majority of people is sometimes different. However, that doesn't make right and wrong. Ethics doesn't change; society either complies with it or doesn't.
Anyway, a great video, X, and a very good view on the subject!

The problem is that a lot of people don't agree that its outdated. There is a small minority which is actively looking for these "problems" and get a lot of media attention in the process. Then the mainstream media and big tech companies mostly only show one side of the story, and people who disagree are demonized as racist/sexist/whatever so that small minority gets what it wants. That last part is vital since it disrupts normal discussion about the subject. But it fuels rivalry between the groups.

Some of Dr.Seuss’ older books had racist messages(that he later apologized for and went against). They weren’t selling well so the company stopped production on them. Some people thought this was done by the pressure of the public or the direct banning by the government and done for more than just the racist books. In actuality the company just stopped distributing books that painted a bad picture of themselves and their author when neither agree(d) with the message.

And ofcourse you have to take the actual differences we see in the real world into account to (a white kid in the suburbs probably grew up with different experiences from a black kid in the hood so to say) though this can be used as a narative device, you have to make sure that you think it out (a suburban black kid probably doesn’t know to much street lingo). Dr Seuss, even though he wasn't my favorite author, was a big part of my first 7-8 years alive, and I remember reading and enjoying one of the cancelled books 'If I Ran the Zoo'. Almost everyone who reads Dr. Seuss is a young child and they don't look into every image/word to see what stereotypes are there. Even if they do stereotype people after reading a book, I'm sure the parents would correct them/make them understand why Dr. Seuss said that. Now, as a 15 yr old, I don't recall ANY racism in Dr. Seuss books at all and I had to look it up to find some websites highlighting some passages or images here and there showcasing racist statements/images. Dr Seuss is a classic for children, and if we're banning his books due to racism, we should probably go ahead and ban most shakespeare plays too (im joking but shakespeare has so much more racism than dr seuss)

even more so how would they be hooked to the story if they themself don't relate to that story

    Just a comment on LotR:
This is an extremely difficult one... the main reason being that the authorial intent behind LotR was to create a European mythos or origin story. It is all about the winding down of the age of magic and the beginning of the age of man. It's a comment on industrialization, truly.
Personally, I am biased towards adding non-white people (and offset the fact that Harad, a black nation, were corrupted by and served the Dark Lord). There is an Epic-ness about it, too, in terms of literary epics (like The Illiad and The Odyssey). In my mind, Epics are far more about events happening than individual comments on culture vs culture. It's a worldly comment on civilization as a whole (again, LotR is about fading of the natural world and industrialization).
"The Wheel of Time", another fantasy series, serves as an evolution on Tolkien; it is far more human and deals with how someone would react to the events carrying out, how nations would react to the Dark One's return and the imminent apocalypse (long story short, it's how nations are currently reacting to global warming: even when they do agree it is occurring, they don't agree on how to tackle it or agree on who should lead the charge). In this series, the world is Broken 3000 years before the story starts. Imagine if the all the Earth's continents were cracked into little pieces and reshuffled. In this scenario it would make complete sense for a little village in the middle of nowhere to have a large amount of diversity in its population. What causes discrimination is differences in skin or eye color (in another series, The Stormlight Archive, eyes are how people are racist and arrange classes).
LotR would not make absolute sense, since Tolkien very deliberately modeled it after the consistency of Western Europe (though again: I would rather their be non-white representation). In the Wheel of Time, they're casting both because skin color doesn't matter when it comes to who can play a character and because it makes sense in-world. And again again, in The Stormlight Archive, there is specific description of racial attributes, in a way far more deliberate than LotR, BUT white people are not the dominant or the most socially dominant race; but in Mistborn you have the same scenario as The Wheel of Time, where skin color is far more mixed.
The fantasy genre is an excellent way to strip away our biased world and put the concepts of racism, classism, cultural-superiority, and nationalism under a microscope without real-world politics getting in the way.

To be fair about lotr, everyone there is from the northern part of that world so it makes sense for them to be white. The haradrim are not black, but they have darker skin because they are from the south. It would not be worth making an entire new movie just to change them to being black

The problem is not that things are getting cancel (they are not. Cancel culture is not a thing), is that people are not willing to take a critical look at works that are indeed problematic, and that have always been problematic, and identify why they are problematic. We need to make a deeper analysis of the media we consume in order to better the representation. We need to be able to say "well, yeah, these movies don't represent acurately slavery, instead they glorify it" or "these drawings are racists sterotypes and Dr. Seuss perhaps is not the best banner to represent tolerance", otherwise we never gonna achieve progress.

Hamilton is juxtaposing the culture of the mid 1700s with the culture of the new millennium. It attributes the culture of the mid 1700s in its titled, Hamilton, to an individual, How ever it tribally attributes the culture of the new millennium to African Americans, who conveniently have a gap in their culture to fill and inconveniently have nothing to hold onto if this tribal project goes awry, instead of artfully attributing it to the handful of individuals who indeed invented hip hop. Because It subscribes this false tribalized route of attribution, it pays its dues via it’s casting, but to me, someone who respects the individual, it fails to pay it’s dues. The choice Lin made was to conflict those who respect the individual, instead of choosing to confront those who hold this tribal belief to be true, but it even fails to do this, by respecting the individual of one of the two cultures it juxtaposes. To actually accomplish what it sets out to do, it would do the very opposite, It would be the story of Hamilton, forgetting his name, told through a musical called Bambaataa.

We have numerous--countless--generational stories about the shit that we have had to go through. At some point, you can't expect us to just let white people walk all over us and expect us to explain to them nicely what they have done wrong. White people have immense privilege in countless different and daily ways that I don't think they can understand with years of studying about it, so I don't feel the need to have to explain it nicely or to have to deal with it. We have been tone-policed for so long that it is just plain tiring. I genuinely trusted that you would understand that at least a little bit better than others considering your past and the progress that you have made, but you have yet to reach that point. I hope you understand some day and reflect on it but until then I cannot continue to support you. Please look into "tone policing BIPOC (and/or minorities in general)" when you want to learn more about why that is bad. /gen /srs

Yes, lets stop making remakes of old movies just in general. Its not very creative and when film directors do that they HAVE to include a diverse cast, appeal to everyone and have some moral highground included. It just makes it almost impossible to score 10/10 on all things in a single movie since there will probably never be "the best" movie objectively.

There is no point in talking to someone who just says "Something Privilege" over making a genuine point. If I am ignorant, fair enough. If I dont get it, fair enough. But that got nothing to do with privilege, that has to do with me either not being confronted with knowledge over it (cause thats a thing) or with me not understanding the bigger picture.
"Something Privilege" is usually only called out by those who arent interested in holding a conversation in the first place.

@@GikamesShadow Benign ignorance has everything to do with privilege. If you're life has been so sheltered that you can be ignorant to certain concepts that means that your life has certainly been privileged. White privilege is just a fact not a buzzword.
Sure you're right in that just saying privledge doesn't address the root causes for said privilege, but that doesn't make the statement of privledge wrong either.

    • @GikamesShadow
      @GikamesShadow 3 роки тому

@@dominicgunderson Well first things first: White privilege is not a fact and you are directly contradicting yourself when you talk about it.
Which I find somewhat odd as well since you go into the topic of ignorance.
You say that privilege is being ignorant. Not only can just about any person be ignorant that you can think of, that also includes everyone who isnt white but also in its most basic definition Ignorance is a lack of knowledge and information. In other words, you currently are fairly privileged, cause you make assumptions about a topic you know fairly little about towards a person that knows a lot more.
If White Privilege is a thing, Black Privilege is a thing. Asian Privilege, Hispanic Privilege and so on and so forth are a thing if White Privilege is a thing. If you acknowledge that, then I will acknowledge the existance of White Privilege. And then we take the word "privilege" and turn it back into "people are being ignorant about other peoples issues" and go back to the norm. Because that happens on a regular basis regardless of how you call it and regardless of whoever it is going against.
So no, this has nothing to do with so called "White Privilege". You can argue that Privilege exists. But then we start a whole "Privilege Olympics" on who is and isnt privileged in other specific ways.
[Random examples pulled out of my behind]
Am I privileged because I am white? - Well yes cause I dont know how non-white people live their lifes. But non-white people also dont know what life as a white person feels like.
Am I privileged because I am able bodied? Yea cause I dont know what it feels like to not have only one arm or leg. But disabled people also dont know what it feels like to have both. (for the sake of the example, we assume the disabled people are disabled from birth).
Am I privileged because I am a male? Yea cause I dont know what life as a woman feels like. But women also dont know what life as a man feels like.
      To close this off:
The grass always seems greener on the other side.
And to be honest, on my side it is pretty green, cause I live in germany where I can sit back and relax while america is throwing a hissifit over meaningless nonsense while things like systemic racism are an actual problem. But here is a fun fact: The crowd who says "white privilege" didnt help me understand that. Aba and Preach helped me understand that.
I mean I dont need to care. I CAN be ignorant lol. But I still choose to interact cause... why not? I wanna learn.

    • @dominicgunderson
      @dominicgunderson 3 роки тому +2

@@GikamesShadow You can't seriously be arguing that every "privilege" is somehow equal. I was disabled, in a wheel chair for half a year, and trust me when I say that our society (I don't live in Germany so I won't comment there) is seriously lacking in accommodation for those with disabilities. Everything is built with able-bodied people in mind, and that's before I get to general biased conceptions you have to face on a daily basis.
Living in a country in which white peoples assumed and maintain power through whiteness (please read how the term of who qualified as "white" was expanded in order to keep poor minoritied European's and Black's from revolting), and have built laws and prejudices that harm other races, white privilege certainly exists. It's easier to get a job, a house, to not be harrased by police, to be treated fairly by the justice system, to get shorter sentences, to get off with a misdemeanor instead of a felony, to assume a position of high-rank, to be treated to better education, and to with more money, not to mentions the benefits of inherited business and wealth (which helps to reinforce an already biased system, but I digress).
To say that white privilege doesn't exist, is to deny reality. To say that other firms of racial privilege exist in equitation to white privilege, is also the denial of truth. The acknowledgement of privilege is, and shouldn't be a problem. It's simply a way in which one can acknowledge the hierarchy in which we live, and with such awareness, potentially push for a more equitable future.

We have 39.5 million people living here. I don't doubt that people are moving, but when you look at the population number and the number of people leaving, it doesn't equal a "mass Exodus"
Also, anyone calling California communist doesn't likely know what the term really means. They're probably searching for authoritative. Which California also isn't. It's a capitalist state with some socialism thrown in and it has the same political problems as the rest of the country.
