Kaiju no Kami Reviews - Space Sheriff Gavan (1982) Series

  • He's half human, half alien, all cop. Space Sheriff Gavan tells the adventures of a space cop who is protecting the Earth from an evil criminal organization known as the Makuu. In the early 1980s, Toei wanted to start up a new Tokusatsu franchise that new fans could just jump into without having to know the series that came prior to it compared to Kamen Rider and Sentai, thus giving birth to the Metal Heroes franchise. Is Gavan a worthy kick-off to a franchise that would span nearly two decades or should it have been sentenced to prison? Watch to find out.

    As I've recently become aware of this show/movies. I couldn't watch the older series as seriously as I might have been as a kid although I recently watch the newer movies and was amazed. The Uchuu Keiji/Kamen Rider/Sentai crossovers were just awesome due to it's special effects. Definitely might take some time to watch the original.

      But the show was style great, and the french dub added alot of humour, by giving Oba a lot of One liner where he was mocking the makuu, named C-rex in French, à la Spider-man.

      I love how the French vilain names are much more imaginative than the japanese ones (in Gavan/Sharivan : in Japan Maku/Mado what a brainstorming they must have had to find these ones). They're much better in French (C-Rex, Burlocks). Plus calling a vilain (Hunter Killer is pretty stupid, in French he's called K-Rex : again that's much better). And in France Kiba is dubbed by a woman (much less weird than hearing a male's voice even though the original actor is a male) @@MrSafior

    Really enjoy your toku video reviews/commentaries analysis. You’re one of the few consistent toku youtuber that would cover the older somewhat obscure and less popular toku shows and include the source footage from the actual shows.
    Really recommend you try reviewing more of the other metal heroes shows like Gavan’s successor shaider and sharivan . They’re like Dyna and gaia to tiga for gavan since ohba return in both as guests. B fighter kabuto and its sequel is an interesting choice as well given it’s the final metal heroes show that happens to be adapted by saban as well before toei try to test on one off shows like changerion that feature ouja’s actor from ryuki. The metal heroes are suppose to be toei’s replacement answer to kamen rider after its revival failure given zx didn’t receive his own full length series. Kind of ironic that kamen rider is back on top and the Gavan trilogy series continues to try and reintroduce metal heroes with kenji ohba and his successor in space squad in the recent years, but with no avail. Kenji is the goat for coming up with the iconic Gavan transformation pose. He went from being akared stuntman suit actor that was insecure about his physique to being in multiple toku series as lead character before returning guest starring in more later on just like kamen rider v3 actor. Even after you finish the big 3 toku franchises and gavan there’s still garo, side series like akibaranger spinoff from sentai, and shojo oriented toku like sailormoon and cutie honey live action that feature a lot of familiar actors faces from other toku series.

      I really do want to review more Metal Heroes stuff, I just don't have the time right now. My biggest focus currently is Super Sentai given those are my biggest money makers ad revenue wise and I'm so close to being up to date. Ultraman became my other focus due to it getting official releases from Mill Creek, but now that I am nearly done with those, I'll be taking a break from that franchise outside of our livestream viewings of the latest episode.
      I'm hoping to knock some more Kamen Rider out next year along with maybe another Metal Heroes show if I can fit it in. Of course, if Discotek were to announce another series for BD release, that would help knock it up my priority list. 🙂 I will have a Gavan Blu-Ray review out sooner or later as I'm still only 10 episodes into that.
      BTW, I already covered Sailor Moon. 😀

    I have finally seen all your Space Sheriff review. The series should get 4/5 ⭐️.
    It is the series that put Toei to the Map of Toku history.
    Ohba outdid himself in this series.
    You needed to add Gavan appearing in Gokaiger as a resurrection act.

    6:51 Official Gavan subtitles provided by Toei clearly explained that Mimi actually 'make an illusion of Earth's bird'. the term 'Transformation' (Henshin or Henkei) never ever seen any use in the show.
    Remember that the 1982 was a 'Laser' age as well as 'Disco' era. By then every Sci Fi considers 'Lasers' to be a magic word because not much potentials of lasers were discovered and exploited yet. nor the actual understandigns of 'Lasers'.

    One of those musical tracks in your montage of music that you liked was recycled from Bob Sakuma's incidental music for Gatchaman (1972-74). I recognize it well from several episodes of that series. It's usually used in that series in conjunction with scenes involving factories and industrial processes or other location establishing shots.

    • @dngillikin
      @dngillikin 10 місяців тому

      The funny thing is: Toei wasn't involved with Gatchaman. That series was done by Tatsunoko Pro. I wonder if some of those music tracks later became library tracks.
      Or *maybe* it was already a library track before it was used in Gatchaman and, contrary to my earlier beliefs, wasn't Sakuma's music in the first place.

    I believe you haven´t mentioned the events of the last three episodes to avoid spoilers, but I´m curious about your opinion on the arrival of a new (and red) character in episode 44, as well as the fate of Voicer, Gavan's father.
    Gavan's episode 43 was very remarkable. It has practically no action scenes, but with great and dramatic moments. Not to mention the participation of the legendary Sonny Chiba.
    About Geki, the Gavan Type G: I believe that the character's "voice" was only found when Naruhisa Arakawa (confessed fan of Shozo Uehara, the main writer of the 5 first Metal Heroes) started to write the character in Uchuu Keiji Sharivan Next Generation.
    Before that Geki was written by three different writers in their appearances (Yuji Kobayashi in Gavan - The Movie, Kento Shimoyama in Go-Busters´s episodes 31 and 32 and Shoji Yonemura in Super Hero Taisen Z), which made Geki have little consistency as a character.

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork
      @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork  4 роки тому

      I did enjoy them because I thought it was interesting to bring in the next series' hero at the end of the show and I thought Voicer was well done even though his death seemed kind of abrupt and predictable.
      I just hate Geki altogether, but damn, I had no idea he was written by that many people.

    I would chance the plot that the Blue Turtle Doubler kidnap beachgoers, along with Kojiro, who isn't taking pictures of women in the beach, where Makuu planning on creating an army of Blue Turtle Doublers or something else, i guess, where Gavan set out to stop their mad plan and save the beachgoers and Kojiro.

    19:30 Actually this is the reason why Toei created Space Gangster Makuu with ability to generate a dark Makuu Space. because it was easier to film Tokusatsu with hero in shiny armor and light emitting sword without leaving a trace of ugly filming tools, instruments, and ancillaries. The Narration 'Inside the Makuu Space, BEM Monsters (and shortly later, Double Monsters) are three times more powerful than they are on Earth' (actually more actions and SFX than without Makuu Space activated) actually means it is much easier to film evenmore intensive actions when sky goes darker. This is due to the CG was at infancy stage. I'm very sure that Gavan was amongs the first Tokusatsu ushered the age of 'Computerizations'.

    Just started this show and I'm only about six episodes in and I love it! For all of the fantastic fight scenes and effects and whatnot, the show is an action.packed cop
    Show. Kenji Ohba is amazing, the way he can switch from affable, heartfelt and slightly goofy to deadly serious is fantastic. I love that the grunts don't wear elaborate costumes but simple biker jackets and jeans and boots, but their heads look like elaborate ski masks. Gives off a nice punk criminal vibe. Fave episode so far is the one with the Octopus Food that makes kids smarter but also indoctrinates them to serve Makka as Doublemen. That one had some nice surreal imagery, and the presence of the weather balloon immediately put me in mind of Rover from the 60s series The Prisoner. Will say more when I've finished the series.

      @@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork The Prisoner is definitely an unusual show to come out of the 60s, but it was very much a passion project by the lead actor, Patrick McGoohan, that wanted to do something different after doing a long running spy series called Danger Man. It's very surreal in it's imagery, and was very ahead of it time in terms of exploring themes of control, surveillance, individual rights and privacy, etc. It's worth checking out. I think it's available on some streaming services like Tubi or Pluto TV.

Space Sheriff Gavan was a huge success in France, maybe the best working franchise of the space metal. As for Metal Heroes plans, sadly not. I'm just too busy with work so the last fansub commitment I have at this time is Kyuranger. My hope is to get that out on Xmas day. We'll see how that goes.
      Aside from that, I'll be focusing on the shows that have been given official releases. I also want to see what Discotek has in store for Metal Heroes before I bother tackling more.
      Now once I've covered every Ultra release from Mill Creek, things will die down a bit since the series Shout! Factory just released or will be releasing I've already reviewed in full, so those will just be given mini DVD/BD specific reviews.

      Ah, that makes sense. Probably best to encourage people to watch the official releases as that'll hopefully indicate to companies that people want more. I just can't see them putting out all of Metal Heroes, though. It's obscure even by the western tokusatsu fandom, outside of South America anyway.
