They released all the stems to ex military to the public for free. You can discover how brilliantly simplistic their production is if you download/listen to those instrumentals.
PS: it's not just exmilitary. Although most or all of them are no longer up on their site, instrumentals for the following albums can still be found on the internet: the money store, no love deep web, bottomless pit, and year of the snitch. And those are ones I know of. And I'm pretty sure they're all legit, like DG released them at some point. The YOTS one is still up on UA-cam.
Yeah it’s crazy to me. They absolutely do not care about the typical bass in mono advice. They love the out of phase shit that happens! Looking forward to hearing what you do with this technique!
Yess I love this. I've been thinking this for years, whenever my buddies say there's "so much going on" in their music I get what they're saying but I can hear that there's usually like... 4 sounds actually happening at a time max.
Im glad someone finally made this video. Thank you very much. Edit: Would love to see this with other experimental hip-hop artists like Clipping or Injury Reserve
Yoooooo appreciate you my guy. My DMs are always open if you need any specific help. My discord also has others to help if you need. Thanks for watching brother. I always see you here!
Great video, Ken! Extra points for making what's-his-name Needledrop look silly. When I listened to Death Grips and a while ago wondered if the tracks are mono duped and then mixed stereo. In other words, you'd get the same effect, but a wider stereo separation, plus you'd fill out the track sound a little. You did this whole video on this subject that I have often wondered about. Thank you! I agree with that Sophie poster that there seems to be screwed up granular stuff going on too. Speaking of Math Rock (and rock shouldn't be included in that description as EVERYONE does, because there are some KPOP tunes with weirdo timed stuff going on too) ever listen to Don Cabellero? Crazy stuff. I used to work for a huge pizza chain here in the US, the one with a game piece as its logo. I drove their tractor trailers delivering to stores and most of the routes were done with two people. I used to drive my co-workers crazy because I would record mix-tapes (the trucks only had cassette players) of stuff like Don Cabellero, Stephen Reich, Lucia Pamela (look her up!), really, really weird stuff, and listen to my music while I drove back to the shop and my co-workers would TRY to sleep in the bunk. Hahahaha.. I'm such an a**hole.
Yeah there are many ways to achieve the Haas effect haha. I needed to do this to save CPU haha. Hahahaha I feel the same way when I play the music I listen to in the car as well.
@@brokenenglishprod I’m an FL user so I use the plugin “transient processor” and use the Max transient preset.. I’m Sure there’s something similar in ableton
hey any chance you could go deeper into your implementation of corpus? curious about setting as well as signal chain/what else you're using to process it into blown out bass sounds. I know this is an older video but any insight would be appreciated
yoo yea actually I remember going over it in a little more in depth in my other video ua-cam.com/video/wuMWlIzBxJg/v-deo.html this might help you out! Otherwise, I could do a better breakdown in the future.
This is super helpful !! We actually released a song called “Shark Week” a bit ago that was hugely inspired by Lord of the Game ! Thanks for sharing these techniques :)!
you can use the HAAS effect which just means delaying one side a little so that is creates the effect like it's stereo. You could also try this free plugin called "WIDER".
This is great, you should have also touched on sampling a bit. They really elevate the production. Edit: it would be cool if you talked about some more experimental artists, like injury reserve
yo bro, how do you figure this stuff out? I listen to Death Grips and JPEGMAFIA a lot but I can't figure out the elements in their music. What helped? Did you remake their tracks?
Yo bro. Remaking tracks. Experimenting. Going to forums and seeing what others say and then trying it out myself. They all help! At the end of the day as musicians our jobs are to steal things we like from other creatives.
The techniques you have given here are on point but the final product just sounds like a Money Store rip off... (Especially those arpeggiated synths, kinda reminds of Hustle Bones)
I’m happy that you found the video useful. Yeah I did base my instrumental on The Money Store. I’ll take it as a compliment as it shows me that I can get close to the sound. Appreciate the comment!
Mostly good tips but the stereo thing is not right, there aren't many tracks where every instrument is stereo, probably because it sounds like trash. Most of the drums and vocals are minimally stereo, having everything be wide doesn't sound good/like DG. It should sound equally good in mono than in stereo
Hey appreciate the contribution to the conversation brother. Do you think there are anything else that is missing in this video about DG? If you’d be willing to share more that’d be great!
Comment below on more artist you would like me to break down in this format!
i would recommend xiu xiu
quinn, gum.mp3, feardorian, 454, evilgiane, mike, daze.gxd, slauson malone (specifically open space open world, or medslaus era), cutspace
Against All Logic. Keep up the good work!
It'd be nice to see an "Interview 2016" by Death Grips drum production video, I'd love to know how to make drums like that

That stereo idea is fascinating, the difference it makes is wild. Ill definitely be thinking about this in the future haha cheers bruh

Alright brother stay tuned. In the future I will be having this as a regular thing
DG also tend To fuck w tha transients A LOT…. Especially on their kicks
also a Lot of extreme multiband compression

You should try and make a beat like 1-800-PAIN, their beats sound like if death grips made a song with 100 Gecs.

how exactly do you use corpus? every time i try to do something with it it sounds like one of those books for 3 year olds with buttons on them
I normally change it to the 'Tube' function. I break this technique down in an earlier video here: ua-cam.com/video/wuMWlIzBxJg/v-deo.html
