- One year ago I bought an HDZero system to test for a long-range, mountain cruising. I've done a lot, I mean a lot of test flights, and these are the highlights. I think the DVR footage looks really incredible, and hope you all like the highlight reel.
NOTE: All DVR footage is unedited with the exception of speed ramping and transitions.
I'll be posting a proper video sharing my experience with the system over that last year, talking about the setup, issues, tips and tricks, to serve as a resource for those looking to use HDZero for long-range mountain surfing, cinematic flights, or just exploration!
Thanks for watching, please Like, Share, Subscribe, all support is appreciated!

Wow!! I hope everyone watch this with headphones on. I got chills!!! Beautiful
Absolutely, sound on everyone! Enjoy the full experience 🏔🎶⛰
can't wait for the next video
Thank you, appreciate the encouragement. I actually have a few in process, but was out of town last month… hoping to start posting again soon. Cheers!
Awesome! Super jealous of your "backyard" 😁
Lol some of these shots actually were flown my backyard… Norway is a crazy place! Thanks
Man I have dji and Ws system, never thought HDZERO could be so good , subscribed and interested 👍👍
Thanks, appreciate the support. Yea, HDZero is a different beast and often gets portrayed negatively, but the system is quite capable and has some real significant benefits. I’m currently beta testing the new HDZero goggles which are really quite nice. I’ll also be testing the new WS VRX with them in a few weeks, so that’ll be exciting! Anyway happy to answer questions or hear suggestions, cheers!
Wow! Awesome flying and great edit!!
Hey, thanks for watching, appreciate the comment! Cheers!
Nice editing
Thanks for noticing, creative editing is such an obsessive process!
beautiful views...thanks for sharing 👍🏼
🖖🏼
Hey Steve thanks, appreciate the comment, cheers man!
Wow ❤
Thanks for checking out the channel. A nice tour of the region with HDZero DVR!
Awesome video.
Thanks bud, a lot of fun test locations!
Marvelous !!!
Thanks, appreciate it!
I need to do something like this for where I fly
Absolutely, make a highlight reel!
Opinions on the drone laws in Norway? Like the CE registration, that you always have to see you drone and other things like the cost of registration. Not to forget insurance...
I try to abide by the laws while still enjoying the hobby for my purposes.
- No problem with registration fees and tests, pretty minor cost and a good way to ensure people at least have some basic knowledge.
- Insurance is always a good thing when people or property could be damaged by mistake. I’m from the USA originally and fear lawsuits and lawyers more than laws and police officers… lol
- I do my best to avoid disturbing other people with my hobby, generally flying in the middle of no where, and if I see hikers I always turn around. I not worried about hurting someone, just know that people often don’t like the noise and don’t want to bother folks…
If it wasn’t for dumb people doing dumb things, we wouldn’t need all these regulations, but idiots are flying around people, in cities, near airports, and causing accidents and problems, and then the laws are made…
The future of delivery drone and flying cars is quickly approaching which I believe is the real reason all these laws are quickly popping up around the world.
Anyway, long response, but it’s a big topic. Thanks for watching asking my opinion, cheers!
Wow great! are you going to publish the gopro footage of these flights also somewhere?
Thanks, yea I was thinking I should try to recreate this exact video with the GoPro Footage! Just gotta find it all… thanks for watching, stay tuned!
@@GiantAntCowboy I imagine it will Look stellar. Thanks for shareing
I have hdo as well, does the vrx work well with them. People are saying it shrinks the screen. Not getting my goggles till March, and I wanted to start using hdzero.
I loved using my HDO goggles with the VRX, perfectly useable. I think people make too big a deal out of FOV size.
The HDZero Goggles are next level though, a big upgrade from the HDO (which are already very nice goggles.)
Not sure if you saw my HDZero Goggle videos but I make some comparisons of the HDZero vs HDO goggles that would be relevant to you.
Let me know if you have any questions, thanks for watching, cheers!
Currently I am on the DJI System, but I see me buying HDzero goggles for exactly that reason you use it. Can you maybe help me? I dont get my GPS RTH at least so reliable that i dont loose my quad instantly...I do a lot of proximity dives and if i loose signal in the Mountains, I just have two options 1. trying to trigger angle, throttle smoothly up and hope for signal getting back 2. trigger RTH via Aux, but then mostly my copter falls at least a few meters sometimes 20+ till it really kicks in...I dont know what I am doing wrong, my settings seem absolutly fine....have 2x copters with GPS (BN220) both the same behavior...Thank you so much
Yea mountain diving is a really tricky situation… here’s some tips:
• The single best thing you can do is make a really good flight plan of where you can and can’t not fly, (I often use binoculars to identify hidden ledges and peaks) and then try to remember those spots. (This is of course hard…)
• Always do a few test runs before pushing the limits too far, because things look very different when you’re up there!
• HDZero is easier/more reliable because you see the signal break-up immediately unlike DJI that hides the break-up until it’s too late.
• I really only use GPS rescue as a failsafe.
• When video is lost I try to straighten/level out and quickly fly up, however with no video this is just by feel/guessing! And Very hard, smart to practice the stick movements.
• Setting up Angle Mode can be safer however in a panic situation you could accidentally flip the wrong switch… I’ve accidentally hit the “kill switch” when trying to use Angle Mode. Then it’s game over…
• The latest BetaFlight is supposed to have a much better GPS rescue, but I haven’t tested it.
Hopefully these tips are helpful, it’s really about planning, practicing and being very careful. It’s very easy to lose a quad in the mountains.
Thanks for watching, commenting and supporting the channel, let me know if you have any questions, cheers!
@@GiantAntCowboyThat was a very nice flight! 👍I also want to buy me DE Hdz goggle, because of the pixels that came when the signal is not good. But my question is: if I fly long range, how far can I go and what antennas do you use? (if it's OK for you to say it) or do you recommend a ws vrx?
Thank you and sorry for my English if I write anything wrong.
If you’re flying an FPV Wing/Airplane long distances, then I actually thing WalkSnail is the best option.
If you’re flying a quad really fast, or in risky places, like the mountains, I actually prefer HDZero because of the consistent performance and static feedback.
I use helical antennas because they are cheap to make and work amazing!
But TrueRC X2-Airs work really well, as well as other other “Crosshair” antennas.
I fly out 7km with no problem using my DIY helical antenna setup.
Here’s a video about my current setup:
ua-cam.com/video/CYphV5FPbYc/v-deo.html
If you want to see why I don’t like WalkSnail for mountain flights, watch my two recent videos…
how did you solve hdzero killing your gps signal? i'm about to switch my long range rig back to analog.
Which GPS module are you using? It’s funny I used this cheap TBS M8-2 module for years with no problems. Then I bought two more and both have major issues getting satellites...
Last week I installed a HGLRC M100 Module and it seems to be performing great without any issues. So it might just be your module.
Note: I don’t use any special mounting (right behind the VTX) or any special shielding.
@@GiantAntCowboy I'm on a genericky small SAM-M8Q. Had no trouble when I was analog, had interference when I tried a DJI Vista which was due to a cable run which I remedied. I'm on a HDZero Freestyle V1 which has been nothing but nightmares. Cables are as far away as I can get without putting the GPS up front and I made a shielded/grounded cable as well. No dice. I don't mind being on analog, was just trying to join the 21st century.
@@liberumaerem I wish I knew what caused this issue. I’ve run a Freestyle V1 for a long time without GPS issues, and now have a Freestyle V2 that works without GPS issues as well.
The issues I had were specific to two GPS modules, these things are so sensitive. (Though they are trying to receive signals for outer space… haha!)
Have you tried another/different GPS module? I highly recommend M10 modules.
👍
whats the best hdzero vtx for long range?
Both the Freestyle V1 & V2 VTXs are great. Flown both out 7km (4miles).
However it’s all about antennas, because I’ve also flown the old 500mW VTX out 7km, done over 5km with 200mW & over 3km with 25mW.
Are you using the goggles or a VRX?
@@GiantAntCowboy idk I haven’t thought about that yet but i would rather get both because I want walksnail or hdzero I don’t like dji anymore
Sorry I rather get the goggles not both*
@@Happyants_ ok, both work great, HDZ goggles are great and a WalkSnail VRX works well on them. Here’s my goggle antenna setup/testing -
ua-cam.com/video/CYphV5FPbYc/v-deo.html
I run helicals because they are cheap DIY & work great, (you don’t actually need four…) Crosshair antennas also work well and are smaller.
@@GiantAntCowboy oh I saw that vid it was so funny the antennas look straight out of the future but I don’t have the tools to build something like that
still looks like analogue
It’ll never be DJI, but if you’re truly interested in HDZero check out this New Camera Comparison.

Either way, thanks for watching, I’ll be posting some DJI stuff soon, finally picked up a setup. Cheers!
