How Syed Saddiq and the Undi18 Movement Are Changing the Political Landscape in Malaysia | Influence

  • Syed Saddiq is a 28-year-old politician from Muar. He has millions of followers across his social media accounts and has leveraged this influence to create policy change in Malaysia - lowering the voting age from 21 to 18 with the Undi18 bill. Saddiq teamed up with a grassroots, student-led initiative, Undi18, to successfully advocate and reduce the minimum voting age. However, even though the amendment was passed, it has yet to be enacted. Needless to say, young people are not happy. Saddiq believes that when change finally comes, young people will become the kingmakers for future general elections in Malaysia.

Although I can understand the appeal of Undi18, statements like : 6:20: "The old people have been there for too long, it's time for them to step down... you are just gonna live for a few years, months, and by the time you've done your damage you'll be gone..." (Saleha Kamil) has a strong ageist vibe. It's not exactly an inclusive movement, is it? Why is there so much age discrimination in this movement? What can the old people expect from this movement when the young are just expecting them to "just live for a few years, months," ...then "be gone"..?

@@sallieceelee5660 I guess she was more referring to all those divisive politicians that have done a certain amount of damage to society & the country. @@RB-rp6ud But she did not say that, did she? She gave the impression that old people should just die before more damage is done. What do you think a retired person, who is not really involved or interested in politics, will feel when such sentiments are being thrown around casually? @@sallieceelee5660 During WW1, WW2 and Cold War, academia was focusing on producing assets who prioritized the industrial revolution and these assets also created policies based on the industrial revolution. Skip some years, we saw how industrial operations affected the planet; flash floods, landslides (especially residential areas, people lost their homes because of very very poor planning), smog, thinning of ozone layer, actual holes in ozone layer, fractured bedrocks, sand encroachment, heatstroke etc. We erred, we learned, we improved. In the last few decades, the academia has been producing assets with sustainability and green innovations drilled in their heads. National policies should also change along with the current objective of the academia. Policies must be made around the idea of sustainability. Ergo, policy makers that are likely to be basing their policies on sustainability are dun dun dunnnnn! You might want to check out net-negative carbon countries.

This will be a force for more than half of electorates to be of younger generation to replace the older electorates. This will be for the good of the Malaysian people. if thinking in positive ways, why not have a try for MUDA to be governing Malaysia on next election? In Malaysia the very big problem is a huge majorities of members of parliaments filled by old peoples. Our problem is our nation slow in progress as old peoples tend to use same method as their governing decades ago. No improvement at the end, wealth distribution between elites and common man gap widely and racism still happened today even nation already in post independence 64years back then.
Feel very tired to hear such nonsense from old people's style in governing nation with their wayang old rhetoric such's "lompat parti", "pintu belakang", "jual agama", "cina balik cina", "kemaruk nak jadi PM", "kluster mahkamah", "terowong dasar laut" "melayu ketinggalan ekonomi" and lot's more nonsense to come. Why not we let younger people to manage our country with more work and less rhetoric? As population of youth increasing hence youth needed more attention and support by the government. Really hope calibre and fresh candidate such MUDA could filled the parliaments on next GE15. Then our parliaments will be more respected with conclusive argument with concrete solution to solve critical problem among Malaysian and youth in particular which are actually almost a majority population in Malaysia.

True.. There should be no age discrimination.. But I would like to say that, we should learn good things from the elderly and vice versa.. Since we are living in different world compared to the old days, there are things that the older generation need to learn from us too.. As for the education system, I would really love it if they give students the freedom to choose their own subjects to study.. This way we can train more people in different fields of studies.. While we do have vocational and science stream schools, I think students are not exposed to these alternatives.. In fact most of us has been thought/brainwashed that we have to be good in subjects like Math and science to be recognised as an intelligent individual.. Also we have to get straight A's and get into medical school or engineering school to be called as a successful person.. That kind of mentality needs to be changed..

Don't know if this guy is truly for the youth or just appropriating ageism to his advantage much like the predecessors do so using racism. It's just going to give rise to a new form of elitism. 🥺 Either way, it's better him than the old crooks. 😂
