I don't understand the use of "Old World" music & orchestration as background sounds for a film about the "New World". Surely there is wood-wind music that would be more appropriate and mood-setting for this other-wise excellent presentation of old world meeting new (older) world.
I just don't "get it"! PS - There never was a romantic relationship between Captain Smith and Pocahontas (she related to him as her surrogate father who left the settlement without telling her good bye).

Dude, the opening is the overture to Wagner’s Das Rheingold. This movie is basically the story of Das Rheingold. It’s perfect 👌

I think I disagree about the ultimate fate of Pocahontas's people, and Malick's conclusion about them. After all, she has a son who lives. He's the future. I think Pocahontas and Rolfe's relationship is meant to show what a good encounter between unlike peoples could be, so my reading of the film's ending is more optimistic, I suppose.

Columbus never set foot on the North American continent. He was in the Caribbean, and was sent by the Spanish. This is set in Virginia years later, in the English colony.
