I watched the finale live, and one thing I NEVER see get brought up is the fact that they played the first episode of the series immediately after the ending. Meaning they really did loop back to the beginning of the series. Super cool detail
Thanks for reminding me of this. I cried so hard during the finale and when the first episode played right after I cried even harder. Such a wonderful show.
One of the most incredible elements of "Meanwhile" that I don't think is well known enough is that when the original episode aired on Comedy Central, the white screen credits of the episode faded directly into the pilot. They decided to make the viewer literally "go around again" and remind themselves about how much they truly cared for these characters. It's such a simple choice to replay the pilot, but so incredibly effective after the absolute heart-wrenching gut-punch that perfect final really was.
That was how I first saw this episode! I was so excited at how perfect an ending it was to be able to go straight into the first episode all over again 😁
Futurama is a show that I’ll always be able to return to for a good laugh and, when I’m up for it, a good cry. There really will never be another show like it!
You missed that when this episode first aired, when the screen turned white with the button press, credits, they immediately cut to "December 31, 1999" and the arcade spaceship. They played the first episode without any adds in between them, driving home the point even further.
I remember that transition back to re-airing the first episode after the original airing of Meanwhile! However, the Hulu revival disproved what we initially thought became of Professor Farnsworth fixing time and rebooting the universe, because in The Impossible Stream life goes on with time having been stuck for only ten years, which is why Professor Farnsworth believed that Leela and Phillip aged much faster than how much time they actually experienced with time around them standing still. November 18, 2024, 3:33pm
I remember the first time watching this ending, it was weird but typical Futurama for their vows to be screwy only to realize the reason they did not use the words "I do" was solely to hold off using them as the last words of the episode. It made those two words (accompanied by the beautiful score) much more emotional.
The fact that they followed up the initial airing of this episode with re-airing the pilot immediately after that is not to be ignored, either. Flash to white, credits, and restarting the entire series over again.
My wife never watched so I decided to finally download and watch it with her. She couldn’t be happier, this show has everything, humor, “horror”, suspense, mystery, romance ETC. I could go on all day. The ending was the cherry on the perfect cake. I am hoping the reboot or continuation won’t mess this once great adult cartoon.
They should just do it during the span of the show. It could be adventures we didnt hear of. They definitely could make it so it fits in and dont gave to ruin the ending
It has one of the best endings.... But it also has to most heart breaking episode ending of any tv show that I have ever seen. Even after all these years, the episode Jurrasic Bark is absolutely heartbreaking to watch.
What makes the ending of Meanwhile so powerful is that even though Fry and Leela have the perfect married life together, they are willing to sacrifice all of that when going back to before the Time Button had any impact because they know that despite the obstacles they have to overcome, they know they will be together again. It’s the journey towards being with each other that makes the destination all worthwhile. That’s true love right there!
I know a lot of people grew up with the Simpsons and they just clicked with that show. Growing up, I would watch it with my cousins mainly because they liked it and it had some great episodes back in the day, but I never truly cared for it. Futurama pretty much immediately clicked with me how the Simpsons did for others. Watching it now feels so comforting to me. I couldn't even tell you how many times I've rewatched it now.
I agree with that 100%. Futurama felt specifically made for someone like me in ways The Simpsons never really did. A show celebrating nerd stuff way before nerd stuff was as popular as it is today.
That finale makes me tear up every single time. I've cried at more episodes of Futurama than any other show. Luck Of The Fryrish makes me almost tear up just thinking about it but if you didn't cry at the ending of Jurassic Bark you're cold hearted monster.
Any Futurama or ATLA reviews or character break downs I always watch. Two of the best shows ever made and yes as before I believe I can speak for most, we want more adventures from the Planet Express crew.
Honestly, I really don't want more episodes of Futurama. I absolutely loved the ending and felt like it was incredibly satisfying. I'd read the comics for more of their adventures
I remember when it aired for the first time on Comedy Central, it didn’t fade to black, it immediately jumped to the first episode and I thought that was so cool
This episode, 'Idle Hands,' and especially 'Jurassic Bark' are perfect examples (along with Fry moving the stars, Leela's royal jelly trip, etc) of what I think seperates Futurama from other animated comedies.
Futurama is probably my favorite show of all time. (actually yes i don't need the probably) i have never been more attached to characters from any media than i have with the Planet Express crew. The show always managed to be equal parts; smart, funny, wholesome, tragic, and uplifting. it really is a one of a kind show. What do you all say? Wanna go around again?
I remember the anticipation for the debut back in 1999 ( I was 8 and a huge fan of the Simpsons) and the fist episode aired on a sunday night my brother and I watched and I knew the show was special. Unfortunately the changing schedule Made It difficult for me to follow the show ,(I was 8 and no smart phones) but still what great moments It has given us.
Top 5 episode for me. I honestly still watch and love this show to this day far more than the Simpsons. The writers always had a self awareness and emotional intelligence of what this show truly is and can't wait for the new season.
Such a great episode, and such an awesome show! So happy it’s coming back! (Overclockwise is still my favorite finale though, although Meanwhile is certainly a close second or third.)
Something you forgot to mention that makes the finale even better is that after they aired it for the first time, they then played the pilot episode, reenforcing the idea of "going around again."
Def one of the most moving animated finalies ever made. Great video an I whole heartedly agree that this was a pitch perfect ending to my favorite sci-fi series. 👏 👏 👏
My brother introduced me to futurama after I found it digging through his computer for games. RIP Ben, I wish we could have continued to grow up together :'(
I saw this come up when looking up the ending for Lethal Inspection for the purposes of making a comment to someone but didn’t know the episode title. (So it was kind of “Futurama ending song bender doesn’t have a backup unit”). Obviously I now remember it’s Lethal Inspection. I watched anyway. I have seen so many tv shows. But futurama had the best ending by far. It is the only show I’ve cried at the end. It didn’t help it was my uncle’s favorite show. And he had just died, but it was so freaking beautiful!
my favorite Futurama story is that for the movie seasons ( Benders big score, beast with a million backs, bender's game, and into the wild green yonder) the plan was to ask for four, get denied and work down to two, instead four was accepted right off the bat.
The only more emotional episode of Futurama is probably Jurassic Bark. Poor Seymore sitting there, waiting for Fry to come home, but he never did. Yeah, they retconned it in Bender's Big Score, but it still hits hard. Close 3rd is Leela's Homeworld, where she finds her parents and we see they were part of her life without her knowing it.
I shed tears when watching the finale and seeing what was happening. I watched the show from when it first aired until the end. It wasn't a binge week, it was many years in the making. It ended so perfectly that I'm not sure if they could top that. It was the prefect happy ending to the side love story that was there the entire show. It was perfect and special, not many stroies end that well.
You guys kept showing that scene of Leela and Fry kissing until i was sitting on my couch drinking my morning coffee and CRYING! As someone who's grown up watching Futurama and forming such a deep connection with the characters, that last episode just pulls on every thread of emotion i have. Fry got exactly the ending he deserved
I always assumed going back would be at the start of everything, not right before the button was made. To me, it hits deep because their love is endless as they are stuck in a time loop.
I JUST finished telling my therapist about the forward time machine episode just to see this was uploaded a few mins ago. What a coincidence… are you in my house?
Futurama is one of those rare shows that doesn't ever have to blatantly retcon. Everything always makes sense while leaving room for endless pathways in their writing. Very few shows can excellently make four different finales that all lean into each other superbly. Futurama really set the bar for how to write adult animation and visual narratives in general.
I am crying so hard right now. Futurama and scrubs were my favorite series and just the hint at Futurama ending I knew I was gonna cry. When Leela says "I do" I just completely lost it.
I saw the episode not knowing it was the ending and I think it's great that it also works on it own and can be a good episode without needing to se all episodes
Everyone was frozen with a smile. Kinda made me think of the movie Source Code(2011), where the protagonist tried to end time with everyone at a happy state.
The writers of Futurama have PhDs in Mathematics and Physics, they're really clever chaps/mega geeks. They're coupled with comedy greats. They're not gonna write crud. This is probably why the show can't stay dead. I'm very happy to hear it might be coming back again, again. Ken Keeler is responsible for those 3 episodes? Those are most of my favourite episodes!

That loop around to the pilot is my top TV moment. I can't fathom any way they could've done that better.
Netflix autoplays the first episode and doesnt skip the credits. At least last time i watched it on there.
That moment was, simply put, genuine television perfection. They brought the series full circle in the best way possible.
