David Suzuki is great when he is talking about physical sciences, but he should refrain from commenting on economics until he has done his homework. Economics is not the enemy of ecology. Laissez-faire economics is, but few economists embrace laissez-faire. Indeed, much of modern economics is devoted to questions of how to most efficiently combat climate change, deforestation, and other forms of unsustainable commerce.

Suzuki is correct. Truth is, most of us in Econ 101 understood that the concept of External Costs is simply a technical term for costs born by the public, health costs, environmental costs, these things that tax the economy in subtle ways. The role of government is to cause corporate players to internalize these costs, through regulations, or civil/criminal penalties. Think about this the next time you hear a nimrod kvetch about big government: who really benefits from small gov - not you or I.

For air quality you can look at trends from the Environmental Protection Agency at EPA dot GOV under AirTrends. Common pollutants such as CO, Surface Ozone, and others can be viewed. There is similar information in the water section. Using largely the power of fossil fuels we clean our drinking water from contaminants every day in America. Now that I've answered your question maybe you can answer for me: How come it seems like the more fossil fuels we use, the longer and healthier our lives get?

Scientific thinking can take place anywhere observations can be made. When a well-known scientist gives their opinion it is generally considered to be based on fact.
When Suzuki says he totally agrees with elements coming from the Earth it represents a dumbing down and lack of critical thinking. A scientist would say that most elements are formed in the hearts of stars or super nova. This is only one example, but there are many others in this presentation if examined with a critical eye.

In "The Paradox of Thrift", "saving is good to each individual but bad to the general population". Neoliberals however, claim that governments, like households, have to live within their means. This false neoliberal analogy between national budgets and household budgets resonates strongly with voters because we intuitively understand that we cannot indefinitely live beyond our means. This powerful understanding must be steered away from national economic policy to support environmental policy.

The economy "needs to be fixed"--no, I'd say we need to do away with the economy altogether. We need to align ourselves with the laws of nature, keep the health of humans and the planet paramount, and devise a system where we use our ever increasing technological advancement to create a sustainable system that works for all involved. We don't need politics or corporations or capitalism. All of these things are, like he said, "human constructs" and thus they can be abandoned--they no longer serve us, they are invalid ideas.

Actually, what you consider science is applied technology. Science tells us how to understand the world. Applied technology is the use of knowledge gained from science to build things. You should be focusing your attention on the companies that apply that knowledge in damaging ways, not the original scientific researchers.

Suzuki's reading of the Canadian government is far too gentle. We have had corporatist governments since Confederation. True, Harper is a scourge, but in a sense, part of our perception is only that he's so up-front about his desire to restructure society and that he's so demonstrably mean-spirited. Best that we, as Canadians, stop expressing any level of smugness about what we do.

The pressure to grow is built right into the basement of the economy in the form of debt issued and interest bearing money-this design feature is atleast part of if not central to what keeps people relentlessly plundering the planet- in such a system people are compelled to keep finding ways to turn the planet into money!!!... just to survive in many cases or to thrive within such a system you have to play the game and the game is money. Its a tragic and stupid decision on the part of humanity to allow money to call the shots yet what choice do we have unless we invent them.

Very nice talk but disappointing. You don't follow the logic of your argument to it's final conclusion, which is, that we must get rid of the profit motive and that means getting rid of the monetary system. As long as money is what we use for our economy, the planet is in grave danger. People and even companies don't want to destroy the environment, but the bottom line is what matters, so they will do what they have to in order to remain profitable.
There's no reason to use money as an exchange currency now. We have the technology to house, feed, and clothe every single person on this planet. And then we can work on educating everyone (not only those that can afford to go to college) so that everyone is able to constructively contribute to a system that truly values them.

    • @bademoxy
      @bademoxy 10 років тому +1

when you say "money" you may not be aware that it's in theory only supposed to represent units of labor and materials.
now our worthless "currency" as it is distorts things so bad we just can't win.
a way around this mess may be in reverting to the use of precious metal coins and the rebasing of our exchange system onto them(and not phoney paper money).credit cards are also a major scam and we are all guilty of living beyond our means using credit-that wasn't just bankers causing problems.
addressing this in one swoop would dissolve the banker's hegemony and restore at least some power back into the hands of the middle class.
what you propose is state socialism, which historically has resulted in the nightmares of red china and the soviet union.

To help David Suzuki, This is a political question. Not an economics issue.
Collectively, we, do not value fossil water, ozone layer, and top soil.
To dismiss this on economics and villianize some amorphous "science" is the victimize ourselves and disable us from action. Suzuki, you and I and 7 billion others value these things.
We value the ozone layer, fossil water and top soil. Not Economics.
.. Just as we target people with bullets and bombs. Not physics.
.. Just as we choose obesity rather than healthy eating. Not biology.
.. Just as we choose inactive lifestyles. Not Physiology.
.. We decide where resources go by lifestyle. Not sociology.
"Money doesn't stand for anything" - David Suzuki's half right.
.. .. We place money on what we value. Economics does not assign value.
David Suzuki's argument is illogical, flawed. Using this logic
physics is responsible for war deaths.
Biology encourages obesity, diabetes, and addiction.
Physiology fails us, evidenced by inactivity.
    No, David Susuki.

suzuki is a wonderful speaker, but his politicoeconomic beliefs are like socialism-unworkable to humans. the commune idea only works in small groups.
we need to get rid of the crony corporatism which has infected free market economies because we have a tiny group of political elitists skimming off all the wealth while the dispossessed former middle class who used to have power are now falling down to the bottom class(which used to be a small minority).
suzuki is rightfully concerned with trying to get society to accept limits on what we take from mother earth and he has done this by illustrating examples on where humankind has exceeded (or ruined)certain resources beyond repair.
however there is no reason why these finite resources cannot have a dollar value put upon them and businesses charged a high enough access fee to not only limit the scale of harvest but also to pay for regulation enforcement and alternatives research(hydrogen for example?).
there are some industries that are so damaging, that like leaded gasoline need to be outlawed altogether. class action lawsuits might be an effective method.
there are some industries (like factory farming) that require much more restrictions and enforcement based on ethics alone.
a higher level of involvement is international fishing requiring united nations not allowing itself to be burdened by politically correct "traditional cultural sensitivities" nonsense any more than islamist and communist dictators there should sway international human rights motions. slavery and burning witches in the west was wrong and now so is human overreproduction and the resulting emptying of our seas.
i believe we can find humane and cost effective solutions to avoid wiping out ourselves environmentally without requiring a socialist world dictatorship nor humans to live in poverty. the key is to inspire each person to do their own share until growing societal pressure exerts enormous influence on even the wealthiest persons living within that society.just discussing this on the networks helps.
there are only two japanese towns , for example who actually benefit from the dolphin meat trade yet those same towns could earn more money if they ran fish farms and dolphin watching tours instead.
it would only take the dictators in china to outlaw sharkfin and elephant tusk trading
to severely reduce the slaughter. their building one dirty coal plant per week dwarfs the tarsands in direct pollution and shows how lopsided was the kyoto accord.

I've always been shocked about the profound hatred Suzuki has towards the human race. Comparing humans to fruit flies! Always complaining that there is too much human beings on the planet destroying the environment. Yet he has 5 children. When you look carefully at the lifestyle of those financing and promoting the global warming propaganda ( Al Gore, the British Royals, Suzuki to name a few) it is as if what they are preaching does not apply to them.
