Thank you, David. Your video, message and movement are strong and empowering. Many of us in Georgina, Ontario, Canada are working hard to save provincially significant wetland from residential development, and are fighting a tough, but successful battle at the municipal, conservation authority and Provincial level. It is in this spirit that we fight. I will now share this message as far as I am able.

Today, I learned that half of the worlds wildlife has been wiped out in the past 40 years. All due to the spread of industrial culture and its toxic byproducts. Those who strive for money are lost. Those who believe technology will solve problems of climate change and mass extinction are in a glamour I live in a place where a piddly municipal council has totally failed to protect the last few hundred acres of forest from destruction, because corn for ethanol exports is more important that ecosystems.

Nice blanket covering of the important issues facing us today. The people of this planet need to learn about the important details that affect their health and well being on a daily basis, to start believing and caring . Pesticides on food is mentioned briefly here but what about herbicides? In particular, RoundUp (185 million pounds used in the U.S. in 2007)! RoundUp interrupts the mainframe of life on this planet. Geo-engineering (chemtrails, persistant contrails etc) has been ramped up to a bizarre level, so incredulous that people seem to protect their sanity by ignoring what is happening right in front of their eyes. Our own money (tax dollars) are being used to pay for the research and implementation of these grossly toxic practices and our schools, health care and community infrastructure are compromised and crumbling into oblivion. There is better food in prisons than in hospitals. Mull that truth over and try to remain complacent when most of us will be experiencing a hospital visit in the near future if we continue on this path.

Imagine that someone plants a sapling (small tree) in a pot and no one will ever touch it again except to water it. After many years, the tree has no more space to grow adequately in its pot and is sucking the earth dry of nutriments and water. The tree can't grow anymore and the soil can't sustain it. In consequence, his tree dies after 5 years. If the owner wanted it to grow into a giant tree, he would've needed a pot that would grow in size at the same rate that the tree would, which is impossible since pots do not grow.
After this tree dies, the owner decides to start over. This time, he plants a sapling inside the very same pot. This time, he pays more attention to the tree. He does not only water it, but trims it's branches and wraps it in coils. The tree starts aging inside the pot without any issues whatsoever and eventually turns into a very detailed bonsai tree. This makes the owner realize that it's not the size of the tree that counts, but its complexity. All the fonctions of a full grown tree are in it except its size. The owner dies and leaves it to his son, giving him the secret to keeping the tree in the pot: Maintaining its size.
-The tree is the human population
    -The pot is our planet
-The soil is our natural resources
-The owner is the decisions we make
So if you read my comparison right, you can clearly see that we as humans are not the problem. It is our population that is the problem. We are too many to inhabit this small planet and we are sapping it dry of ressources. We do not need an enormous amount of humans on this planet. All we need is our longevity and our current advances in medicine, science and technology. So if we humans are the problem, we humans need to stop breeding like rats since we are currently acting as a parasitical infection to this planet.
The solution: It is imperative that we allow a maximum of 1 offspring per couple or none if possible. If we do not do so quick enough, our little pot won't be able to sustain us anymore.
Just think about the positive impact this would have on us and our planet...

I I love DavidSuzuki. I wish he were aware of the ISO 26000 as a tool for environmental change.
Taking a deep breath and meditating on it might be helpful. failure is a perspective we all share, success is contained in the effective use of all our tools. In 1993 it was the importance of breath. Today it is use of The ISO 26000. It took David 3 years in the first instance, how long for the ISO 26000?

The problem is people are protesting the symptom... The problem is really right under our noses.
The industry that builds our homes, infrastructure and things. The industry that produces our food, clothing, electricity and fuel.... we all want those things, more and more, never enough, we all need those things or society as we know it grinds to a less than graceful halt.
To change our 'frame' is to take a global selfie and criticize our own behavior, only then will we transcend our downward spiral into environmental oblivion.

Goldfrog's Smart Phones Shop Human beings have had many natures as any brief look at anthropology will show. Our values of today is not necessarily what we value tomorrow. Fatalism is just an excuse for not having the gumption to do anything.

mysticonthehill anthropology still believes that Man has spent 90% of his time on earth living in caves and picking berries. our innate paranoia of "the other" still reflexes in violence towards "the other" just as it did in the stone ages. if a doctor tells you he is not able to cure your cancer you may say he's being fatalist and lacks gumption but those are irrelevant judgments that do nothing to solve current problems, just as your rear-view mirror look into anthropology contributes nothing.

I too am making changes. My first step was realizing that "local leaders" are only elected officials who are supposed to carry out the will of the People they represent. Corporations with deep pockets end up controlling them. If only the people would stand up and say; "Hey you are not doing your job, you are fired", regardless of terms of office, then you would have leaders who realize who they must listen to.

Goldfrog's Smart Phones Shop I believe credible scientists are fully aware of what's happening to our environment, hence the censoring and silencing of said scientists by the Harper government. You need to get out from under your rock and see what's happening as your comments really have done nothing here but made everyone aware that you aren't willing to take action and that you don't really care about anything but to try to make yourself seem aware and intelligent. Without success.

"We celebrated them as great victory, but now I find that we're fighting exactly the same battle again" - David Suzuki. Humanity has yet to learn that all competition in the long run result in a lose-lose outcome. In a competition, one side makes a move, then the oppositions make their move to counter; back and forth they go, making series of moves and counter-moves, all the while the environment continue to collapse all around them. In the end, they both lose.
Has it ever occur to anyone that the collapsing environment isn't happenstance, that it is a contrived, purposeful, and a carefully managed outcome? That the collapsing of the environment is the "Final Solution", the "Final Fail-Safe" to the human aggressive and monetary competitive question? Consider this. Suppose you found out that your neighbor imprisoned and starved his own family despite having great wealth; he beats and tortures his wife and children, rent out his children to child molesters. And, he is building and stockpiling weapons. If your neighbor is capable of doing all manner of abominations to his own family, what isn't he capable of doing to you and your family correct? Wouldn't your neighbor then become a threat to you and your family? You would then be forced to call the police and have your neighbor "removed" would you not?
Now consider what we human are doing to our own species. We are exploiting, enslaving, starving, murdering, and torturing our own species. We pass law that fence up the land, depriving people of their rights to life. Without access to land to grow food and build shelter, people die; their rights to life are deprived. We pass law that evict people into the street, which is no different then murdering people with a bullet. When people are evicted into the street, they die a slow and painful death; being expose to the element, having poor access to food and sanitation. If we human species are capable of doing all manner of vile and abominable things to our own species. What wouldn't we be capable of doing to other sentient species out there who are different from us, who have passed the test and have earned the right to exist peacefully? So wouldn't we become a threat to them, which would necessitate implementing certain fail-safe counter measures would it not? Food for thoughts.
Fortunately, we do live in a sentient universe. So compassion and consideration are made for the innocents who are trapped among the aggressive ones. Note the repeating patterns of extraction of the innocents out of harm's way. Both in Biblical histories as well as in secular histories. Were there not movement to extract Jewish people out of Germany during WWII? Schindler's list comes to mind. Were there not movement to extract African-American slaves out of the plantation? The underground railroad comes to mind. Were there not movement to extract Americans dodging the military Draft in the 60's and bring them to Canada? The Hippie movement comes to mind.
Humanity is divided into two type of people, peaceful people and aggressive people. Peaceful people are drawn to collaborating and sharing. While aggressive people are drawn to competition, taking and devouring; they have "insatiable appetite". Peaceful people by their nature are like water. While aggressive people by their nature are like fire. Fire is aggressive, it dominate, destroy and consume everything in its path. But fire is also unstable, it ALWAYS consume and burn itself out. When you have a society filled with peaceful and aggressive people, the aggressive ones will naturally seek out position of power to dominate and control that society. They don't just dominate and control access to resources, they also dominate and control ideology and perspective. So by their fiery nature, they naturally steer the society they dominated into destructive path. For example, a fire type mentality would design the light bulb to break after so many hours of usage, whereas a water type mentality would design a light bulb to last as long as possible to minimized resource consumption. The less resource consumed, the less pollution is generated. A light bulb that breaks after so many hours of usage is a timed self-destructive device. A fire type mentality naturally seek out destruction, thus it influences the law and policies that they make, and it influences the type of solutions that they come up with. This is why they always steer the society they dominate toward destruction. History validates this. Noticed all the empires of the past are of a fire type society? Highly competitive and full of aggression. They all rises to great height by devouring their neighbors and their surrounding environments; but they also all collapsed by the exact same mechanism. Not a single one withstood the test of time.
Now consider this. How do the fireman deal with very large forest fire? They don't try to put out the fire with water. Instead, they create more fire. The fireman would create a fire line ahead of the on coming fire, burning up the fuel. So by the time the large forest fire arrive, there is no more fuel left to sustain it, and it collapse and burn itself out. Now isn't that interesting, the global environment collapse would serve the exact same function. Without an environment, the aggressive fire type civilization would burn itself out, allowing for the peaceful water type civilization to emerge and repair the environment. This is why innocent, peaceful people are being extracted out of harm's way.
We leave these clues for those with eyes to see and the hearts to understand.
"For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened." - Matthew 24:21 [KJV]
"And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain." - Isaiah 4:6 [KJV]
"And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in." - Isaiah 58:11 [KJV]

I feel the government just constantly creates bigger hurdles for people to protect this land. I now worry that impoverished native communities are now targets to help these big corporations meet their ultimate goal of continually polluting while filling their pockets. I found pride in my people that we would try using our voices to protect our world's pristine land. It makes me sad to think that I am part of a band that is moving through stages over a LNG proposal. Our fishing land is beautiful. I cannot hold my head high knowing what some of my people are crumbling to. Years of poverty, now this. The weight of the world is in all of our hands. I agree with everything David has said here and many of the comments but one thing that has not been brought forward is the fact that we the consumers are just as responsible for the dire straits we are in! So what are we going to do as consumers of carbon based products and the waste we produce ,our gross negligence in farming techniques, the wasted use of our precious water resources etc.? Who will lead us into the much needed transition from non-sustainable to sustainable products, produce and energy? Not the government of any nation nor their umbilical lobbyists of various destructive corporations.i agree with one of the commenters here. The only way to be able to do the right thing is to transition the global financial system.Central banks, the IMF,the various Federal Reserves( which started this mess in the first place!)the World Bank... They are all based on the same outdated theory of economics. The most important and precious resource/investment is the human child.Irradicating poverty, ,providing descent education and health care and its various branches of service, descent retirement funding and providing descent healthy foods in sustainable agricultural methods( check out Rodale Institute ,Pennsylvania)comparable to the GMO crop yields or better without poisoning the soils and water tables or the delicate microbes necessary for healthy sustainable farmland and produce. The buck stops here with us folks. We can demand our rights for clean water ,air, healthy environment but by God we better to our part as consumers supporting the corporations that do the opposite. this is the challenge we are faced with. changing our dirty habits globally, helping one another to achieve this instead of acting like children." Well if they aren't going to do it why should I " attitude. Indeed it is time to act now to preserve the future. Our beloved planet deserves the right to be inhabited by good stewards of her many gifts.

Nature is essential to our survival? Money is equally as important. We got bills to pay, mouths to feed. Many of us don't live on the government teat. We work for a living.

    • @Frankenstein077

'Money,' is an intangible human construct used to facilitate trade. It's only important to us because we've *made* it important. Every other species on the planet has survived just fine without it, as did humans in the not too distant past. 'Nature' is the world around us. Without it there'll be nothing to eat, regardless of how much 'money' you have.

Good work. The changes we seek require more than dreaming to come to fruition. Dreams are the seeds & its time to move and to act. It's time to do.
I would like to see more of a Native & Indigenous representation here. If the treaties (same as laws) were honored, many of our lands and waters would have care and protection. Honor treaties, as we Honor our Mother. Acting so that Our Children's Children have beautiful, sustained lives is what 'future' is. We dont now what other species' concepts of time or existence is. Even the concept of 'future' differs among people. Our common ground is our intents. And to Love ! Together, we CAN make these good changes.

Canada will never be a leader, for over a hundred years investors have come to Canada to extort it because of a lack of intelligent political leaders. We should have been the richest country in the World,I once said that we could have been the Japan of North America. We've sold out to special interests and continue following the same model as these multi-nationals take their profits and our resources elsewhere. We continue polluting our water ,air, and soil as there are now thousands of toxic sites around Canada left to sit.Vast areas are old mining sites containing synaid where the ground looks rusty brown and no vegetation can grow within these areas. There are only dead tree stumps reminding us what we've done to this country.Toxic water flows either north or south carrying deadly chemicals to our oceans,of which, have become the World's toilet bowls !! Canadians are push overs they sometimes make noise but can't bite nor fight for future generations to have a cleaner and safer country, outrageous !!

we need to all collaborate to work together - you ask what will we eat ? Healthy clean food that we grow together, we have all the resources we need together. This is not about sucking from the Govt teat - that is a fallacy - the Govt teat is virtually dry and what it currently emits is bile. We need to look to each other - yes we need to help those who through illness or infirmity, can not hep themselves - we have able bodied beings, land water that has not yet been polluted - we seed share, we stop being obsessed with chlorine and ' products ' that poison the planet we are here to live WITH, and poison us. And as for the Govt not being able to afford it - wow ? ! lets stop funding wars, giving Big Corporations huge subsidies, get them to pay tax on their multi billions - lets stop the politicians getting fat life pensions after 2 years doing deals with companies and all lining their own pockets. The economics of the west is built on DEBT the economics of the world is build on debt as it is funded and managed by 2 banking families. The countries currently being invaded and attacked by USA and the other western nations are ones without Rothschilds banks ! The federal reserve is a PRIVATE BANK. How can COUNTRIES be in DEBT ? Who is the country in debt to ? Think about it ? ICELAND - kicked out the Rothschilds banks and went back to printing it's own money - it wiped out the debts and locked the corrupt banker up - what did USA and Canada and UK do ? BAILED them out and all snuggled back in bed together. In truth we on;y ' need money ' as we re caught presently in a trap that we often believe we are powerless to get out of and that is not the case, think of a pyramid we are at the bottom and there is way more of us :-) we all need walk away from supporting all this garbage, support local, grow food, share and stop buying ' stuff ' - We need to coexist with each other and our planet. No one OWNS the EARTH it's a planet that has a resonant frequency, it is a planet that has life and life forms that all can coexist. WE can not afford NOT to do this - because when we say ahh well we need money / we need this and that we have sold out to the ' Man ' We t' the people ' have allegedly voted leaders in that are meant to ACT the WILL of the PEOPLE - Harper nor any of others do that - so they should be turfed out and we need to stop looking just to the need of the week or month and think bigger and realize we are amazing beings with a an abundance of what we need to live peacefully - we do;t NEED oil or GAS we have solar, we actually have FREE energy ... but that's for another day. Lets all stop buying in to the BS - money wont save us .. only WE and each other will save anything.

By "boil their water" do they mean distill it, or what? because pollution can't be heated away; pollutants in water will remain unless purified such as via distillation. Only infectious pathogens are "removed" by boiling, and those aren't a cause of pollution, but rather water treatment and/or hygiene.

At this point 681 people have indicated that they "like" the video and only 22 "dislike" it. It would appear that climate change deniers like to see themselves in print. A disproportionatly large number of deniers have made disparging remarks about Suzuki and the majority who are concerned about our environment and the legacy of uncertainty that we are leaving future generations. Sadly, it is their response that justifies the inaction of governments. "Tomorrow" will be too late.

    • @Wildicon19
      @Wildicon19 10 років тому +5

This is a good question, it is believed that animals are doing this purely on instinct through generations of trial and error, with the success passed on from generation to generation! I believe that animals are capable of foreshadowing the future as that is knowledge passed on. Animals are smarter than we give them credit for. I have seen it with my own eyes!

madman3891 Yes, I agree with Wildicon. It's instinct. Deciduous trees don't plan for the future when they shed their leaves which protects against broken branches from heavy snow loads and neither do squirrels when they, inexplicably to themselves, start to gather food for the winter.

    • @Neuralatrophy
      @Neuralatrophy 10 років тому +2

Our sense of future involves a capacity for accumulating knowledge and making enduring changes to our environment for ourselves and future generations... Many other animals may be able to learn, use tools, build social groups etc... but few, if any reach the capacity to teach more than essential life skills, plan months, years, even centuries ahead or study the nature of things about them for the sake of knowing.

    • @Frankenstein077
      @Frankenstein077 10 років тому

I'll echo that it would be more an instinct than a concept with other animals. However, I'd like to add that being aware of seasonal cycles isn't really a concept or awareness of what we call the 'future' regardless.

This is not tackling the main issue behind our dirty environment, we need to futher increase human rights and gets each person a say in their government, city, town, country and not just let that 1~10% decide how things should be. Then we can tackle things like the environment, cause like he said u'll find yourself winning one battle but realizing that was an short term victory. David Suzuki I like a story about the hummingbird traveling with a big full of water to try to put out a fire when I was a small kid I met Chief Dan George and Algonquin Park when I was on an expedition through Oakland Park and he told me a story about a girl that was thirsty and wanted a drink of water any noticed on the Park Bench there was a picture of water with a little bit of water in the in the picture now the crow back and forth and stones into the water so he can have a drink this is the story that you told me 8 years old now I'm 53 and I was in my car driving down the street and I seen you walking across the Yonge Street and I yelled out hello David Suzuki and you turned your head you didn't see who was in the car
Because we were passing us a great deal of speed but still I like your topics you and your daughter are doing such great work but the wards are atmosphere and the planet itself whatever every 100 years are worth the strain this is how I know it has now without changing the way it is supposed to attend to change but you're also talking about toxic waste that's also introduced into the world from mining from oil Timberland so forth and what this world does to get its natural resources to ask our new government that Justin Trudeau would be the best idea right now David he would probably go with what you're talking about you've been doing this for many years I've seen you on TV lots of times from every topic that you mention reason come up with it is Splendid to hear from a man like yourself and now hearing your daughter is taking your footsteps you both are in the foot doing some kind of thing there all the way up into the Northern parts of Canada your science work and what you doing has a lot to do with our world I hope one day somebody really open her ear and listen the government has to hear exactly what you're saying from water into air that we breathe and everything else but also you have to understand a lot of these companies that are raping the Earth of its natural resources are the ones to blame especially when they're doing mining for gold and they're using harsh chemicals like cyanide I don't understand why they harmful chemicals to melt gold to bring it together with cyanide but once released into the water it poisons the ground with seeds animals drinking poison and children and adults that drink the water are poisonous and all these oil exploration Expedition specially this that's going on is harming our world what about all these when they first came out I tried to do something about it and tried to stop it but our government does not want to pay attention about it it said I was crazy I need some kind of psychiatric help they said but I explain to them plastic bags do not break down it would take about a billion years for plastic to break down what town was talking to our government about and that's when he was in power he had the police escort me away but it doesn't matter if we're not scientists if they don't recognize we're all escorted by police away even if we mention something about our atmosphere for our drinking water the pollution that is created nobody will listen until somebody gets hurt but thank you very much David Suzuki for listening to me I hope to meet you one day in person and say thank you very much and a great job you are doing sincerely Elvis Aaron Presley Mark Dawson That's it man and God bless you David Suzuki and your daughter

Most of our provinces are now out of debt. Nearly every state of america is in debt. Now compare the american economy to other super nations. We're above america, its not going to be any better time to ensure this. We have money to spare. Canada will be giving up a lot of income, but by doing this they will gain the full support and strength of its people including me. Personally where i live i smell an oder in the air i breath outside, i buy bottled water to avoid the weird fuckin taste thats in the tap water, and i have to drive across the city to an organic store to buy over priced food that is not loaded with chemicals and preservatives. If we can succeed in making this happen it would change my life.
The only reason that there is shit in our air, water, and food is because of money. Food sticks around to be sold for money longer, Less regulations and safety procedures for power plants that save them money, and i cant even pinpoint a reasonable reason to why they have all this garbage in our water. Maybe its cheaper to put a stupid amount of fluoride and other shit in our water i'm not sure.
If you see this movement happening in your area, please go and join it. There is literally vary few other ways to help our earth and our country on such a large scale.

D'autres on estimé 2030.

You mentioned the acnowledgement of the need to include people of racial minorities , homosexuals, and women in having human rights as something that Canadians became conscious of. I wonder if or when these same Canadians will ever become conscious of the need to see men and boys as worthy of thesame human rights. If you think this is a joke, just watch a video of a baby boy being circumcised and then ask yourself if this is denial of a human right to the male half of humanity. The criminal code of Canada describes female genital mutilation as something illegal, but not male genital mutilation. Very few Canadians are protesting. Canadians in general brag about the need to respect women, but most are in denial that there is a need to mention respect for men.
