- Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable's Orb stormed to the lead in the stretch of a sloppy Churchill Downs strip to win the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). The homebred son of Malibu Moon covered the 1 1 /4 miles in 2:02.89 and topped Golden Soul by 2 1/2 lengths.
The winning rider was Joel Rosario, the hottest rider in the world off a record-breaking Keeneland meet and a victory aboard Animal Kingdom in the Dubai World Cup sponsored by Emirates Airline (UAE-I).
Golden Soul rallied for the place spot, topping Revolutionary by a length. Normandy Invasion was a head back in fourth.
Orb delivered the first Derby for Hall of Fame trainer and Lexington native Shug McGaughey. "It means everything to me," McGaughey. "I'm thrilled to death for the Phipps and Janney (families) and all the people involved with the horse."

I lost my ass yesterday, but seeing someone with the class Shug has, eased the pain to say the least. Heck, I almost teared up when he began to tear up when being interviewed. He's a class act and a great representative for the sport. The sport needs a lot more Shugs!
"The Kentucky Derby? There is no an adjective able to describe its greatness"
Jose Gregorio Guillot, venezuelan horse racing analyst and radio producer. Best regards from Venezuela.
Joel Rosario orgullo dominicano
lmao i love shug he acts like it was just another day in the office
thanks for the up-load!
Interesting race for the fast early going pace. Orb showed extremely impressive dynamic balance when bumped hard I thought first by the much bigger horse Normandy Invasion while they were coming of the final turn, and then again by Golden Soul coming down the home stretch. Both times Orb continued to churn up ground in stride. He seems to turn on and sustain tremendous acceleration during the later stages in races--his final kick is not just fast but looooooooooonng.
Race Call:
Larry Colmus
Yes indeed. So glad for Shug. This is so redeeming after the heartbreak with easy goer in 89. And it happened on a muddy track for added measure! Orb's got the potential for a TC winner. Let's hope.
I really thought Mylute was going to be closer, but I am very glad for Shug. A fine gentleman and trainer!
I think that Orb was one of only two horses that I ever picked to win the Derby to have actually one. Street Sense was the other one. Bodemeister, whom I also picked to win, did run second in 2012 though.
Thrilled for Shug and the Phipps and Janney families.
Thought you may enjoy hearing Cot Campbell talk about his thoughts on horse racing: Augusta Outdoors: Horse Racing in Aiken, South Carolina and Cot Campbell
$1M! Congrats Orb!
and their into the stretch!
que viva joel rosario que viva RD
Nice people - especially nice, in that Mr. McGaughey isn't the sort of trainer to have 5 entered in the Derby, making him more of a horse-man than a numbers-man, IMHO; and, a deserving team of owners (glad to see Mr. Phipps finally get a Derby winner). On to Baltimore, and good luck there ...
They took care of that foot problem on belmont week. There was a picture we could clearly see the shoe getting out just a little for couple of stride at the beginning of the race before getting 'back' in place couple of strides later, surely missplaced a little
Orb is horse. Horse is orb.
all the way from the back to the #1 place amazing!!
On to the triple crown.
that was a great call
2013 stunk for the TC. Let's hope we have a better run at it this year.
wonderfull Joel Rosario made in Dominican Republic...........go go gog go Dominican Rep. Go away Brrick gold of Dominican Rep.
Weekend Surprise was a wonderful daugther of Secretariat
Here's hoping his son will follow in his hoofsteps this year
This is so cool! When we got a new horse, Zeke, the lady said that Orb was the Great-Grandfather or maybe just Grandfather) of Zeke. Orb must be old! Zeke is 15
+Snowflake La Loupe I think someone majorly messed with you
Javier Castellano cooked normandy invasion, started to move the horse way too early in the back stretch......reminded me of Bernardini in the breeders cup. But Javier is pretty aggressive, i guess thats why he wins a lot of races.
Me too! We havent had a triple crown winner since Affirmed :/
I really hope he gets the triple crown!
Thumbs up for Jenn Patterson!
What is the name of the large round bit that Shug used on Orb?
Joel el mejor te lo dije bamo brilla amigo
República Dominicana 🇩🇴
I just saw on Facebook Secretariat's Meadow page a news video and blurb that shows Ron Turcotte saying he thinks Orb will win Triple Crown, not might or could but will. He's never done that before. He saw Orb in Florida and tho his races/wins weren't spectacular he is strong and has improved steadily. Wldn't that be something.
Just checked pedigreequery and Mr. Prospector and Damascus are great great grandsires at same point in pedigree. Seattle Slew great grandsire also.
it like runinn on slop
OOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB!!!!!!!
I'm still thinking Big Brown had a pretty decent change, if only it wasn't for his shoe trouble in the belmont
I was there! Orb was awesome! Wish I woulda bet on him, but I had Verazzano
I chose Orb, tough luck on your selection, Verrazano.
The last one I think was in 2006 with Barbaro. I'm convinced that he would have captured the TC if he had stayed healthy.
How many quarter cracks did that horse have? Separation of the hoof wall (he had that on both front feet)? His feet are bad. Period. You seem to be focusing on the Belmont. Focus on the horse himself instead of what the farriers did to artificially help him.
It wasn't his shoes - it was his feet. They were bad.
Big Brown was the fastest horse on drugs. He was so confused when he lost the Belmont and I cried for him. I rescue off track Thoroughbreds and all go through a painful drug withdrawal. It is criminal what they do to these horses. It makes me sick.
Go 16
To be honest with you, I didn't think Orb was all that, ya know? He failed to impress me. I don't care what his bloodlines were, he just didn't live up to expectations.

..great race Joel Rosario...😂
I pry that California Chrome wins the race
Did he run on drugs and if so which ones?
""OOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRBBBBBBBBBBB"""
$1 trifecta pays 3462.80. boooooyaaa
The Kentucky Derby is pretty exciting. I've studied the derby in order to put money on it. Big money can be made. That's when I found something: racing's made of two divisions: PROFITCAPPING and HANDICAPPING. Go to google.com and horseracinganswers.com you can learn much more about Profitcapping. An immense insight for us players. Handicapping predicts the order of finish of races. Profitcapping predicts profit to be made over months.
you know ? lmao
Loose ring snaffle.
