This song is iconic. I remember I was 15yr in my bedroom watching on my 25" 📺 when this video came on MTV. Then I went out and bought the Slim Shady LP on CD 💿 and became a huge Em fan.
When you get past the ridiculous things that he says and concentrate on the way that he says it, you understand that his rhyme patterns, flows, wordplay and metaphors is what makes people rank him so high. It’s just unstoppable
The magazines and articles say his controversial lyrics made people eager to hear him not his rapping skills or music. According to news articles he trashed everyone in his songs even his fans, his parents and was verbally assaulting women in his songs constantly. After his comeback and after he became Eminem after slim shady that's when he became famous and admired especially in countries outside united States he was discovered when he wrote songs like "Not Afraid" that inspired people. After becoming Eminem he became so popular that even if he puts something filthy, inappropriate or evil in his songs his fans used to trash people that complain about his songs. Young kids did enjoy behaving like a gangster and doing things what slim shady mentioned in his songs. I personally enjoy to hear his fast rap part in his songs it's fun to sing along as well.
Should do the album version of this, because this was from the time when guys like Em actually rewrote lyrics for the “clean” version. Like that “elf” line ya’ll mentioned after first pause, that’s a complete rewrite. Actual bar is “since age 12 I felt like I’m someone else cuz I hung my original self from the top bunk with a belt”
Little known fact: Even the album version was cleaned up from the original. Most of the songs on the Slim Shady LP were Dre redressings of songs Eminem had already made a long time ago and self-released on the underground circuit. Dre's label hooked the beats up, but I noticed they insisted on toning down a couple of lines in order to avoid catching heat. For example the "spaceship" line was originally: "Running over pedestrians, R***ping lesbians, While they screaming 'Let's just be friends'" The line makes a lot less sense when he turned it into "in a spaceship." The best part about Eminem, is that he can make things rhyme and go together that shouldn’t rhyme or shouldn’t go together. He’s a rapping comedian, and he’s witty AF. I’d never want to get in an argument or fight with him. Definitely not a rap battle with him!
