    Thank you for putting a very intersting story to one of my Detroyat class starships.
    I had the USS Niantic presumed destroyed by the doomsday weapon the USS Constellation encountered, as this ship was patrolling in neighbouring vicinties/sectors that the USS Constellation was patrolling in and around in when SHE encountered the doomsday machine in that episode.
    Neither ship knew what happened to each other and the Niantic went months without any contact with neighbouring Federation planets OR with any Star Bases, space stations or even Star Fleet Command, which led to an investigation by Star Fleet Command that the USS Niantic and her crew were assumed destroyed by the very same doomsday machine the USS Constellation encountered and was destoyed by. No survivors ever found or ever reported in.
    Very nice story.

    These fan films understand something the current gurus of the subsequent Star Trek series never did understand. We loved how the original series sounded. The phaser sounds, the senor readings, the music. Most of those wonderful sounds are absent from current incarnations of the show including, I'm afraid, the latest explorations of 'strange new worlds.'

    There is an STTNG novel called Vendetta (non canonical please note and very minor spoilers) that indicates this device may be from not only outside the galaxy, but is possibly a Preserver weapon. A "Borg Killer" similar to the Federation's USS Defiant, but FAR larger and immensely more powerful. And also there is a second version of this weapon depicted in the novel. It is much larger, has the same "maw" as the Doomsday weapon, but falls off at a 90 degree angle into a gigantic spiral spinning downward. Perhaps either a newer, more powerful version, or simply a different design whose aim was for a more formidable threat than the previous version could handle. Also in the novel, the second version seems to require an organic "pilot" to make it work correctly. The first version was completely automated by all readings.
    This implies that the berserker nature of the first weapon was perhaps in error and a more advanced, more precise version was created. But it was not launched in time. Perhaps for the best, as if the Borg were somehow able to take control of this monster, then the devastation would have been far worse for the galaxy at large. Also, it has been potentially speculated that perhaps the weapon may have been an advanced scouting weapon sent by the Kelvan Empire in the Andromeda Galaxy, but there is little to no evidence to support the claim. However due to their aggressive nature and highly advanced technology, it still remains a remote possibility. If Rojan was still around, perhaps he would know if Kelva sent this.

  • @scottgardener

    Awesome fan theory! It explains how Ceti Alpha 6 could explode, and how Ceti Alpha 5 could have shifted orbit. It does leave in place one major nitpick about Star Trek II, however, that the Reliant and her crew did not detect evidence of this cataclysm, either in the form of debris or odd orbital shifts throughout the system. That said, your story is an elegant explanation as to how a planet could just explode suddenly. Also, cool ship design, and a wonderful addition to my head canon.

    • @davidvanhorn3340
      @davidvanhorn3340 2 роки тому +8

      If the planet-killer fulfilled its function and took in the debris of Ceti Alpha 6 for fuel, Reliant wouldn't have found debris.

    • @TheLAGopher
      @TheLAGopher 2 роки тому +7

      Another thing to consider was that USS Relient had been assigned to support Project Genesis, and the crew were obviously growing tired of searching for a lifeless world for a planetary scale test. The Relient could have been so focused on finding a viable candidate world, that they may have disregarded evidence of a cataclysm, that they would have determined to have happened years earlier, as not of immediate concern.
      The focus was to vet Ceti Alpha VI for the Genesis team. And since even a successful test wouldn't mean immediate colonization of Ceti Alpha VI,
      the Relient would have had plenty of time for a more extensive investigation of the system's history which could have led to referencing the
      logs of the USS Enterprise, USS Constellation, and the USS Niantic.

    It's an interesting idea to have the Planet Killer be the reason Ceti Alpha 6 was destroyed thus laying waste to Ceti Alpha 5 Where Khan, Lt. McGivers and the Superhumans had colonized. However, the Planet Killer cut planets up to use them as fuel and not to just destroy them and leave. So it would have remained to fuel up with the rubble from Ceti Alpha 6. Also, it would have likely continued cut up and consume the remaining planets in the Ceti Alpha system true to form as depicted in "The Doomsday Machine".

    It would explain how Ceti Alpha 6 exploded and how Ceti Alpha 5 orbit shifted.
    It also explains why Reliant didn't detect signs of Ceti Alpha 6 exploding.

Another interesting point about the Doomsday Machine was brought up in the STTNG fan novel, Vendetta: TOS theorized that it came from another galaxy and used planets as fuel...except there aren't planets in the voids between galaxies, that we know of...so no fuel. Which would make its origins even more mysterious.

    I have a new theory as to why nobody noticed that Ceti Alpha VI exploded. The system presumably has an asteroid belt between Ceti Alpha V and VI... Maybe the Shockwave of Ceti Alpha VI's explosion somehow shifted a fair portion of the asteroids to where Ceti Alpha V used to be and combined into a rough planet sized rock..... It read as a planetary mass on sensors. Unless a ship got close enough to actually see the planet... It wouldn't appear to be out of the ordinary. Meanwhile Ceti Alpha V somehow shifted to where Ceti Alpha VI used to be. The Ceti Alpha System is far enough from Federation space that it would be extremely unlikely that anyone would report the change. There may have even been a law similar to the one that made travel to Talos IV or Genesis illegal. Only authorized Federation Starships could actually enter the system as Starfleet didn't want to risk another Space Seed incident. Kirk couldn't check on the Colony as he was never given the chance to. He probably thought about it but couldn't get the clearance. After a while he just forgot about it lol.

    Nice way to tie in two of my favorite TOS episodes. True the Khan and Decker scenes were rough but you did the best you could.with what you had and I applaud the effort. My only real gripe is more of a nitpick. The planet killer tends to smash entire solar systems rather than cherry pick individual planets. I would have expected it to move on to Ceti Alpha 5, then 4, 3, 2 and so on. Here it just moves on after consuming one planet. Maybe it only needed enough fuel to top off the tank? I don't know. There are number of reasons it could have for deviating from its usual course of action. No need to let that get in the way of.a good story.

      The warp core breach was probably not as explosive due to safety mechanisms in place to mitigate damage in the event of an accident, while the intentional detonation of impulse engines was set up for maximum destructive output. I did intend for this to cause enough damage to make the Constellation's later destruction to be effective. Had the Niantic not been destroyed as it was, would the Constellation's destruction have succeeded? It's just a way to make the PK seem even more deadly.
      I'm glad you enjoyed the film. :)

      The Doomsday Machine neutralised Antimatter aboard ships within close range...warp drive and torpedoes would be useless

    • @Raymar3d
      @Raymar3d  Рік тому +1

      @@jyralnadreth4442 I may have answered this elsewhere, but the photon torpedo in TOS was never said to be antimatter. It was referred to in "Balance of Terror" as a 'proximity blast phaser' in fact, which I always took to be just a setting, and too much of a mouthful so they started calling that setting "Photon Torpedo" later. They were not encased in shells like the film version. Doesn't mean you're wrong, just that it was vague enough that it was worth doing a shot down the throat of the PK, especially since they didn't try it in the canon episode. Why not see what it would do? That's what I was thinking. Didn't do much, dimmed the lights a little, that was it.

    the only nit-pick I have with this story is Antimatter...the Doomsday Machine somehow made Antimatter inert at close range and so Warp Drive for most Starship's would be disabled (The Enterprise and Constellation suffered this....Fusion Powered ships would be unaffected so Romulan BoP etc) and Photon Torpedoes would be useless too (Hence why only phasers and the impulse reactors on overload were used in the Original Episode as weapons) I do like the tie-in with Ceti Alpha VI....it fits nicely

    • @Raymar3d
      @Raymar3d  2 роки тому

      That's a good point. Perhaps in this case, because it was unable to feed on the planet due to the Niantic showing up, and having just arrived in the galaxy, it was unable to do the antimatter drain yet. Since it had just awakened from being dormant for a long, long, period of time, it was low on reserves, and also why Niantic was able to take so many shots. Your point is excellent, and it takes some finagling to figure that out, LOL. :) As for photon torpedoes, IMHO, in TOS, they were never explained to be antimatter warheads. They were once referred to as "Proximity Blast" phasers in "Balance of Terror." So I never thought of them as antimatter warheads until their redesign in ST:TMP and beyond.
      There're a few other differences too. When the Niantic explodes, it didn't destroy the PK. My thoughts on that were that it was less damaged at that point from battle. Perhaps if they hadn't detonated inside the PK first, the Constellation's destruction would not have been enough to finally destroy it...? Makes it that much scarier later. :)
      Thank you for the thoughtful comments. I hope that my rationale makes it a workable explanation.

    • @Raymar3d
      @Raymar3d  Рік тому

      Also, your point about the antimatter being "deactivated somehow" can answer the question about why the warp core explosion didn't do more damage. It was weakened by the recharging planet killer!

      In the Star Trek Remastered version, that's correct. BUT in the original, the phasers were red. tos.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/2x06/doomsdaymachine_288.jpg
      My attempt to replicate the Planet Killer was based more on the TOS original version than the remastered version, and IMHO, the remastered changes are good and bad. I liked the phasers being red in the early seasons, and presumed there was an upgrade to them that happened soon after this episode, as the rest of season 2 used blue phasers. Some ships would have red, with older weapons systems still installed, and others would have the new higher energy phasers (blue) as refits occurred. Then... the movies turn them red again. Go figure. LOL
