Mr Light said he didn't have any tools to fix Bella's bike. He also said he had mended and reinflated the tire on his own bike while he was waiting for her. Did he have tools or not?
Light clearly murdered her. No one is going to ditch their bike unless they're guilty and who goes for a bike ride with a weapon? He was prowling. Wonderful presentation. Thanks a bunch.
She mailed a letter to her fiancé right before she was murdered. Imagine receiving that letter afterwards? It’s so sad and tragic but hopefully she was able to tell him one more time in writing that she loved him 😢
It sounds like Light killed Bella. We can only wonder why, and we'll never know if his suffering from "shell shock" (PTSD) had something to do with it. However, his excuses as presented by his lawyer, tell me it's likely he was just a simple murderer.
It must have been a poor community because otherwise, I would expect friends and family to collect enough to give her at least a modest headstone when she was buried.
Mr. Brodie, I would like to make a video request if you please. I recently read about the murder of the actor William Terris by fellow actor Richard Prince, who was jealous of him. @@claresmith9261 An accused's past is almost always brought up in court. So is the past of the victim. To have the jury hear absolutely nothing of this man's past is odd. Very nice presentation, and I like that you dressed the part! This story seems to fall somewhere between a Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes tale and an episode of Grantchester. Living in a large City in the U.S., I find it amazing that there have been so many murders in small rural towns in England. I'll have to check back for more of your videos, as I'm a murder mystery fan from way back.
I so very much enjoy listening to you as you tell your tales with your Soft soothing Scotsman’s voice and use of the wonderful kings English! I know I will always have a good nights sleep after listening to you. Thank you so very much.❤🤗🌟
Here's what really happened -- Ronald Light "tried it on" with Bella. She rebuffed him in an appropriate manner and he feigned a chivalrous apology, thus recouping her trust. Not knowing what to do when she found him still waiting, she continued on with him and he took his hidden rage-revenge on her. This is my belief. We'll never know, but God knows.
Light was a true weirdo, a stalker. But I doubt he murdered Bella - the angle of the shot was too unrealistic for an attack - does anyone really believe that Light deliberately fired from below so that the bullet came out the top of her head?. I suspect he produced the pistol and was showing off with it in front of Bella when it went off and the bullet ricocheted off the road, travelled upwards and into Bella's face. Light then panicked, as did anyone else (a young boy?) who was nearby shooting at rooks (though not with a .445 rifle!). And if Light's 'confession' is real, it fits my scenario rather well. He could (and I think should) have been convicted of manslaughter, but never murder.
@@pabmusic1 Thanks for your input. We'll never know. I agree your theory is a really plausible and a good one, but now that you describe it, I have to wonder if he had produced the pistol for some other reason than just to merely show it off and then it mis-fired. I'll continue to contemplate all that you wrote.
I wonder what Light's assumed name was after his acquittal? I can't imagine that someone like that would have suddenly changed his ways and lived clean for the rest of his life.
Very interesting. I knew about this case because I was brought up in the same area of Gartree Road. As a young boy in the 1960s, I often rode my bicycle along Gartree Road to the village of Stoughton, (actually it's pronounced 'stoaton' not 'stowton').
I’ve heard this story before. You bring it to life though. Thank you for sharing all these tales. Keep up the wonderful work. You are an amazing host! 😊
Bella's untimely end greatly reminds me of the case of Kyllikki Saari, an infamous murder case from my home country Finland. Gartree road is literally 10 minutes away from where I live near Stoughton (pronounced Stow-ton) and this is the first time hearing about this, my ears pricked up as soon as I heard Stoughton mentioned...There used to be a good air show here every year!
This is so tragic. He got away with murder, because they were able to retain the best defense they could buy. However, over a century later, we know who did it.
That was very interesting, thank you. Just for accuracy, Stoughton is pronounced "stoe-ton", as in toe, rather than "stough-ton", as in plough. Houghton on the Hill up the road from it is the same. We be a bit odd in this here bit of Leicestershire!
Until you discussed his past trouble with girls at school I wasn’t convinced he was guilty. Even after that new fact I still couldn’t say guilty beyond all reasonable doubt. I like the way you presented it, in an order that kept changing my mind as new information came to light.
I say Light was undoubtedly guilty. If you've seen enough of these true life crime documentaries and heard detectives analyze them, you recognize certain classic dodges by the guilty - they tell half truths, usually by putting themselves at the scene of the crime or admitting to being the last person to see the victim alive, but they always say they left the victim alive. Another is to say "the gun just went off" or claim they shot the victim by accident! Any gun manufacturer who made a gun which would just go off accidentally would be sued out of existence! No, they don't go off "accidentally"! (This goes for Alec Baldwin too!) Also his inconsistent statements about not having the tools to repair her bike but suddenly had them to repair is own. Did anyone look at his bike to see if his tire had been repaired? Or that hers "wobbled"? And why, when he was a total stranger to Bella, would he think that she wanted him to hang around waiting for her (I think it was a whole hour) so they could bike back together? Is that a reasonable thing for him to think she would want under any circumstances? She indicated to her relatives that she wished he would go away so how likely was it that she would want him to wait? She was used to travelling alone, not with perfect strangers! Why on earth did her uncle let her leave with him? How could he not see the red flags? And the prosecution was inept - not debunking his unlikely narrative! His actions in getting rid of the bike and not coming forward were more consistent with guilt than not! I doubt this was his only murder.
My favorite storyteller! I had a thought that maybe he shot a bird and she scolded him and he shot her because my brothers used to shoot birds and my grandma would go crazy on them. Just a thought because you didn't mention S.A.?
Am i understanding correctly?...her and her uncle knew this green bike guy was a stranger, waited an hour for her, knew her name...and she took off alone with him and the uncle also thought it was ok?
Different times, there wasn't the general mistrust in those days, Bella didn't have to go with him, went willingly so the uncle was not worried about him.
you earned huge respect for the cycling reenactments, i would say you went beyond that with a costume but you always wear that outstanding tweed suit 😎
My ears pricked up when you said Bella was born on July 14, 1897 - I was born on July 14, 80 years later. Such a sad story - from her parents not able to buy a headstone to mark Bella’s grave, to the lies told by the man who killed her. I wonder whatever came of her fiancé - whether he was able to find love after Bella’s death. I even wonder what became of the policeman who took Light’s confession, but was unable to use it to get justice for Bella.
We all know more about criminal psychology than most people knew back then. We get educated by so much true crime media & see the usual behaviors of personality types time & time again.
Two people know what happened, Bella & the person who shot her. A young life cut short. One never knows if we will live to see another day. That's life.
Ronald Light had a very good lawyer; however, I believe that we all face an ultimate judgement in which no mortal lawyer can intervene. Thank you for telling us about the unfortunate Miss Wright, ensuring that she's not forgotten.
It doesn't matter how long ago injustice was...it makes me angry! Light liked to assault little girls and teenage girls. He had a reckless habit of arson. He was fairly meticulous about hiding his tracks, filing off the bicycle serial number. He had a history as a habitual liar. Light would later claim his pistol went off by accident and hit her--there is no question HE SHOT HER. So none of the story of them parting is true. They were together, he claimed he was showing her his gun. They estimated she was shot from 6-7 feet away, too far for her to be examining the gun. Maybe to shoot the bird, whose corpse was found. At the inquest, the bird apparently had also been shot. His mother's maid said he sold or destroyed the clothes he'd been wearing that day. While his clothes had been described, they were grey and commonplace. Only his bicycle was unique. This suggests there was either bloodstains or he used his clothing to muffle shots. Clothing used as a silencer would explain why the bullet had less velocity and did less damage to Bella's face. It would also have allowed him to shoot twice to kill Bella and the bird without the locals hearing. He certainly was not grief stricken enough to come forward or say a single true word when police found him. He was completely cool and unemotional. An additional speculation: Light married a woman with a young daughter. Did he really live a blameless life afterward?
I love that you bring these lesser known stories to light - not the same ones that the true crime industry churns out - and allow these people who might otherwise be resigned to the footnotes of history to be remembered again, if only for a little while.
