@WayBackAmericana I hope his family decides to tour it again. That black jump suit that looked like an LP record was at beginning. On the way up the stairs to get in the museum had lyrics on the front of the steps. The Starman video played on a wall size screen with the costume he wore. There were so many beautiful things and video rooms and sets We got a hotel and I saw it again the next day.
I like wrap dresses even now, but they aren’t as easy as they look, they are very prone to gapping, and I don’t like to have to pin them. And jumpsuits…I think they can be great, but once out of diapers they are completely impractical!😸
Loved the rundown of 70s clothes. My sister still crochets to this day. My late husband wore his corduroy pants till they were thread bare 🙂. I learned not to wear a wrap around dress anywhere with a lot of wind- big mistake. Almost hurt myself trying to walk in clogs & also playing with :clackers'-- hope the both don't come back.
Thanks for sharing such great memories! Your sister sticking with crochet is so cool-it’s such a timeless skill. And your late husband rocking those corduroys until they were threadbare? That’s dedication! I can totally imagine the wrap dress-wind combo-sounds like a lesson learned the hard way. And clogs and clackers? They were like a ’70s rite of passage, but yeah, maybe we’re better off leaving those in the past! Thanks for the laugh and the nostalgia!
Great decade for pimps. I started making my own clothes in the 70s because I hated what was being sold in stores. Then I began making clothes for others, and that started my career as a fashion designer. I wasn't the only person who hated 70s fashion.
Class of ’73-what a time to graduate! Sounds like you fully embraced the iconic styles of the era (minus those wide collars, of course). ’Nuff said indeed! What a great memory to have lived through it all!
White belts for men. I actually had my mom buy white shoe polish to keep it looking spiffy! Long sleeve billow shirts for men. Noone had mentioned Dickies? The fake turtle neck?
I had a polyester suit in the first grade, though I'm not sure if you'd really call it a suit. It was turquoise with bell-bottom pants and a little short-sleeved jacket that snapped up the front. The jacket was also decorated with silver studs. I wore a white turtleneck under it. I guess the year would've been c.1972.
Now that’s a legendary first-grade outfit! Turquoise polyester, bell-bottoms, silver studs-it sounds like you were the coolest kid in 1972, hands down. That white turtleneck really tied it all together. If only you had a picture of that look-it’s pure '70s gold!
I learned about “dress weights “. I’m a sewist, I learned to sew small weights, buttons, drapery weights in the hem of my dresses/skirts in the seam to keep them from flying up. AND! It looks FANTASTIC DANCING!
@@barbarabonnette2705 I was going to say that. I wore a wrap skirt once that came undone and fell on the floor in a room full of people. But thank God I was wearing a half petticoat.
Your halter tops aren't. A halter top has to fasten behind the neck, not have ordinary over-the-shoulder straps. Flared leg pants aka bell bottoms more properly belong in the 1960s.
Knitting and crochet are not the same thing btw. Also, tube tops were not allowed at school. 1/2 the photos about 'peasant blouses' were not peasant blouses. Much of this isn't accurate in the photos. But there are a good amount that is. Mostly, the photos don't match the dialog in many instances. When you were talking about corduroy, the photos were of suede and leather??? When you talked about Paul Newman wearing puca shell necklace, there's a picture of him in a ball chain necklace with a beer opener hanging from it! What? Yes, Sonny and Cher wore bell bottoms, but as you are talking about Sonny wearing them, he is wearing straight legs and Cher has the big bells on. Everyone I knew (I graduated from HS 1970 btw) wore hip hugger bells of different widths. Girls couldn't wear pants to school until 1971. I thought that John Travolta wore shoe boots with heals with his white suit (?). Elton John wore huge platforms though in performances. Halter tops hooked behind the neck. The strapless and the ones with straps that you showed were not halter tops. I never heard of 'gunny sack dresses'. Also, I'm not sure that you actually lived during that time or you were just saying stuff like you did? Your photos were from the era, they just didn't match up much of the time with the narrative. This could have been better.
I’m starting to realize this video went outside my field of expertise. Haha. Anyways, it was fun to research, just need more help with photo selections! Thanks for watching though!
Gunny Sack dresses were very popular in the mid 70's. I got married in one in 1977. It was cream colored with an empire waist and long flowy sleeves. Bought it at Nordstrom's in Portland Oregon.
Pastel floppy hats for bridesmaids? That’s pure ’70s magic! I bet it was such a stylish and unique wedding-those hats must’ve been the talk of the day. Thanks for sharing that fabulous memory!
@WayBackAmericana We got married in my parents back yard which had a pond...beautiful setting! I wore a long sleeve chapel like dress (so dumb!) It was July and it was 100 degrees..no wind! The under sleeves of my dress actually melted! My brother in law sang and played his guitar on their deck..Peter Paul and Mary's Wedding Song! Then I turned to my soon to be husband and sang their song " Follow Me!" I thought he would love it but he grimaced and said " What are you doing?" Lol
The ’70s really were something special! So many iconic memories, styles, and vibes-it’s hard not to miss them. Glad this brought back some love for the decade!
I was a kid in the 1970s, but I remember a lot of these. My mother used to crochet ponchos for me, which were surprisingly practical garments for cool but not cold weather. One thing we did at our elementary school was wear short-sleeved shirts over long-sleeved turtlenecks. I don't know if that was widespread or a regional thing, but I was both amused and nostalgic when the look made a comeback years later.
Thank you for sharing your memories! It's always fascinating to hear personal anecdotes about fashion trends from the past. Your experience adds so much to the discussion!
You seem to have crochet and knitting confused. Some of the outfits were crocheted, but you showed someone knitting. Just don't want to confuse anyone. Some of the blouses were peasant blouses that were shown. Some were not.
I wore brand new Corduroy trousers in the mid 80s during exam time at my Uni. The sound they made in the deathly quiet library mortified me and put me off them for years
Wow! Great research done on this video! I remember all of these looks! I just subscribed to your channel. I also love the narration. This was the most entertaining walk-down memory lane I have had in a while. Keep up the great work!.👍 Oh and I also shared this video with my cousin who is now a fan too!
I followed the fashions: I had a (mostly) crocheted bikini in several shades of green, a red tube top, a black-and-white Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress, a puka shell necklace, and a denim jump suit. I wore a Gunne Sax dress to prom.
You absolutely nailed the ’70s fashion game! A crocheted bikini, red tube top, wrap dress, puka shell necklace, denim jumpsuit, and a Gunne Sax prom dress? That’s like a greatest hits collection of the decade. You must’ve turned heads wherever you went-what an amazing style journey!
I’ve worn shearling car coats and bomber jackets almost constantly in my 54 years on this earth - the rare timeless classic! My mom wore a lot of scarves in the 60s-90s, when my folks downsized homes a few years ago the estate company rep went nuts when we showed her almost 50 like-new Hermes scarves. I had no idea what those things cost new, no wonder my mom was always so happy when she received one from my dad 😂
Shearling coats and bomber jackets are the definition of timeless-great choice for staying stylish through the years! Sounds like your family had a knack for timeless style.
My grandmother made me a lovely black crochet long waistcoat. I wore it over denim hot pants with a rainbow striped jumper and long pink suede boots. I also split the sides of cord trousers and added contrasting flared inserts.
I'm loving how you bring such enthusiasm and positivity- the spirit of the 70s is alive and well here. You could double check the John Travolta disco white platforms, he wore black cuban type heel shoes with that white suit. The prariie style dress maker was Gunne Saxx not Jessica McClintock. Overall I love the video thanks for fine fun content.
I had a tube top. I wore it to school in middle school and we weren't kicked out. However, they were dangerous around middle school boys, because they could easily be pulled down. Not fun. It's hilarious that you have the corduroy sound! I had corduroys and corduroy overalls. Luckily I was super skinny so mine didn't make that sound. Honestly, I had almost everything on this list, including the high wooden heel clogs. They took a little practice to walk in. Thanks for the flashback!
That’s awesome! Gunne Sax definitely hit their peak in the early ’80s. A genuine one for your graduation in 1981? What a perfect way to celebrate-those dresses were so iconic and dreamy! 😊✨
Most of the walking men under the leisure suit section were not leisure suits.. anything with a normal collar and buttons was just a suit. Leisure suits had the 2 pockets and seams down the front.
Hot Pants!! Hot Pants with pantyhose and platforms were haute couture at the beginning of the decade, but that abruptly changed with the disco look in the mid-70s, and by the end only hookers wore them, and still do. The Disco Look was the tight strappy top with a swirling long skirt and heels. It killed the miniskirt.
Hot Pants were such a bold statement-pairing them with pantyhose and platforms was the height of early '70s fashion! You’re spot on about disco taking over mid-decade, with its glamorous, flowing skirts and heels stealing the show. It’s wild how trends shift so quickly, isn’t it? Fashion sure had its dramatic moments back then!
Born in 1960? You lived through the prime of ’70s fashion! Earth shoes were practically indestructible-definitely built to last. And a wrap dress for disco? Absolute perfection for hitting the dance floor in style! 😆
My best friends mom crocheted us lined bathing suits. Hahaha! They filled up with water and nearly fell off of us in the city pool. Didn't work but we had a good laugh.
The entire aesthetic of the seventies was awful. The colors, the styles, the polyester- blecch! I managed to live through it, but I’ll never forget. One exception was the wrap dress, still a classic that looks good on most people.
I remember a corduroy blazer I got for Christmas one year. It was beautiful. I let me friend borrow it and she burned a huge hole in the front from her cigarette. 😞
Every era has its own unique style, and while today’s trends are definitely different, the ’70s had its own bold and unforgettable flair. Pink hair and tattoos might not have been the thing back then, but those bell-bottoms, leisure suits, and platform shoes were just as iconic in their own way! Fashion always finds a way to keep us talking.
My best friend and I made our own Roller Gear ❤️ i bought jeans at garage sales and made insets with zippers and added fabric at the bottoms. Disco fashion ruined that stuff.
That’s so creative! Making your own Roller Gear sounds like such a fun way to stand out, and those custom jeans with insets and fabric details must’ve been amazing. Disco fashion really did take over, but your DIY style sounds way cooler!
Most of what you’re calling peasant blouses aren’t peasant blouses. Peasant blouses are loose fitting, with a elastic or drawstring neckline. For instance at 2:58 on what appears to be a catalog page, none of those are peasant blouses. Also a lot of what you called leisure suits was NOT.
My grandmother, a farmer’s wife born in 1900 and living in the rural south, wore wrap dresses when she was a young woman- as did many of her peers. The dresses could easily be adjusted for size and were inexpensive to make. It made sense during an era when birth control was not available and money was scarce.
In the early 70s big collars on shirts had round edges and were generally floral with matching ties. The big pointed Saturday Night Fever collar was from 1977 onwards.

Oh wow, that'd be a fun exhibit to see!
@WayBackAmericana I'm hoping someday it will open again. I flew to Chicago to see it. I guess that would be up to his family.
My crochet bikini worked just fine for swimming.
@angelabluebird609 Was it lined? My friend tried to make one and it stretched out. She had to get a towel around her to get dressed
Crochet everything: proceeds to show everyone knitting.
Sorry about that!
Puka shell necklaces Hurt! Loved jumpsuits and I sewed mine.
Thanks for sharing!
I like wrap dresses even now, but they aren’t as easy as they look, they are very prone to gapping, and I don’t like to have to pin them. And jumpsuits…I think they can be great, but once out of diapers they are completely impractical!😸
Haha, I know what you mean!
Oh, they were unforgettable all right. I LOATHED the fashions of the 70s.
Really? I thought it was great! Take me back any day.
@@WayBackAmericanaand me, I adored the 70s, maybe not the leisure suits though
Was Glorious! Loved it then love it now!
And the music!
@@jeskeepinitreal I did, too, but would not wear a halter top now.
Great decade for pimps. I started making my own clothes in the 70s because I hated what was being sold in stores. Then I began making clothes for others, and that started my career as a fashion designer. I wasn't the only person who hated 70s fashion.
Interesting, do you still make your own stuff now?
I haven't forgotten any of the 70s styles.
They’re classics!
Graduated from High School in '73!! 'Nuff said...Wore them all!! {except the wide collars}
Class of ’73-what a time to graduate! Sounds like you fully embraced the iconic styles of the era (minus those wide collars, of course). ’Nuff said indeed! What a great memory to have lived through it all!
I loved my earth shoes... ✌️
Ah, earth shoes! A total '70s classic. Comfortable, funky, and ahead of their time-just like the era. ✌️😊
White belts for men. I actually had my mom buy white shoe polish to keep it looking spiffy! Long sleeve billow shirts for men. Noone had mentioned Dickies? The fake turtle neck?
Ah great ideas! They'll be in a part 2 for sure!
How can you forget? Everything is back in🤣. Wear what you want.
Ha. You're not wrong!
Thanks for the memories!
You’re so welcome! Glad the memories brought back some smiles and laughs. Thanks for sharing yours, too-it’s what makes this so fun!
Jean jackets were soooo cool!
Agreed!
Wrap dresses do NOT WORK IN WIND
😆
We wore slips back then so no worries……
I learned about “dress weights “. I’m a sewist, I learned to sew small weights, buttons, drapery weights in the hem of my dresses/skirts in the seam to keep them from flying up. AND! It looks FANTASTIC DANCING!
@@barbarabonnette2705 I was going to say that. I wore a wrap skirt once that came undone and fell on the floor in a room full of people. But thank God I was wearing a half petticoat.
My peasant dress was from Mexico.
Wow!
Your halter tops aren't. A halter top has to fasten behind the neck, not have ordinary over-the-shoulder straps. Flared leg pants aka bell bottoms more properly belong in the 1960s.
Dang, I guess I needed someone to review before I uploaded! Ha. Thanks for watching though!
Everyone I knew in the 70's wore bell bottoms and flared pants.
I was a teen in the 70's & we most certainly wore bell bottoms . Our pants had to be wide enough & long enough to cover our platform shoes .
Where did you go to school that allowed tube tops?!? And no 16 yo wore leisure suits. Lol
@@Dirty_Squirrell Right! No one was allowed to wear anything like that. Girls still had to wear skirts and dresses to school in 1970.
Beautiful!
@@sissy7248 lol, So did I!
@@sissy7248 That sounds very much like mine!
Floppy hats! Lol! Mu first wedding ALL the Bridesmaids had pastel floppy hats!
Pastel floppy hats for bridesmaids? That’s pure ’70s magic! I bet it was such a stylish and unique wedding-those hats must’ve been the talk of the day. Thanks for sharing that fabulous memory!
@WayBackAmericana
We got married in my parents back yard which had a pond...beautiful setting!
I ❤ and miss the 70s !!!!
I enjoyed this so much! Thank you.
Awesome! You’re very welcome. Thanks for watching.
Movie/ celebrity fashions were NOT what everyday folks wore.
I was 20 in 1970 so...this was funny
( No tube tops in schools!!)
Yeah. I was there
You’re so right-movie and celebrity fashions were always a bit out there compared to everyday wear.
Enjoyed it and spot on, I’m a 70’s kid.
That's awesome to hear!
Jumpsuits were all fun until you had to tinkle 😂😂😂😂😂
So true! Jumpsuits were all the rage, but the bathroom struggle was real. Fashion definitely came with its challenges back then!
It has to be the RIGHT FLARE
That’s true!
You seem to have crochet and knitting confused. Some of the outfits were crocheted, but you showed someone knitting. Just don't want to confuse anyone.
Some of the blouses were peasant blouses that were shown. Some were not.
From the multiple comments I think I was the confused one. Ha.
I wore brand new Corduroy trousers in the mid 80s during exam time at my Uni. The sound they made in the deathly quiet library mortified me and put me off them for years
That’s such a relatable story! The dreaded corduroy "swish" in a silent library-talk about timing! At least it makes for a great laugh now!
Better earth shoes than 5 inch heels
I bet!
Love these!!!
I love your commentary and sense of humor❤
Thanks! These videos are so fun to make, I'm having a blast to be honest.
Wow! Great research done on this video! I remember all of these looks! I just subscribed to your channel. I also love the narration. This was the most entertaining walk-down memory lane I have had in a while. Keep up the great work!.👍 Oh and I also shared this video with my cousin who is now a fan too!
Wow, thanks! Your comment just about made my whole year.
@@WayBackAmericana Thanks for reviewing the 1970s trends! It brought back fun memories! 😊
I had 2 pairs of corduroy- one rust colored and one light grey pair. The light grey were my favorite pair
Sounds like you had a great corduroy collection! Great memories of timeless style!
Noted! Thanks for watching, I’ll get a second pair of eyes (female) on this kind of video next time. Still fun to make though.
Jessica McClintock ALSO made prairie style dresses. They were mostly a bit later though, in the 80’s.
What a trip down memory lane! Sounds like you embraced all the best (and trickiest) trends of the ’70s. Thanks for sharing your memories!
Gunne Sax were early 1980s. I had a genuine one for my high school graduation in 1981.
Noted! Thanks for watching!
lol I forgot the sound the corduroy makes...still love the look.
Timeless and stylish, quirks and all!
Born in 1960 wore most of the female styles.
I couldn’t wear out the Earth shoe from the bottom. 😆
Wrap dress perfect for disco!
Born in 1960? You lived through the prime of ’70s fashion! Earth shoes were practically indestructible-definitely built to last. And a wrap dress for disco? Absolute perfection for hitting the dance floor in style! 😆
Picture of Paul Newman was NOT a puka shell necklace.
Good catch! Thanks for pointing that out!
My best friends mom crocheted us lined bathing suits. Hahaha! They filled up with water and nearly fell off of us in the city pool. Didn't work but we had a good laugh.
That’s hilarious! Even if it didn’t work out, at least you got a good laugh and a story to tell!
I remember wearing brown cords and I had Wallabee shoes that went with them. But mostly I used to wear my big Bell Levi's jeans and a halter top
What a classic ’70s combo! That’s peak ’70s fashion right there. You must’ve looked amazing rocking those timeless trends!
No earth shoes, FAMOLARE,
I had to look that up!
Loved my Earth shoes!
Oh yes, Famolare! With the wavy bottoms. :)
The entire aesthetic of the seventies was awful. The colors, the styles, the polyester- blecch! I managed to live through it, but I’ll never forget. One exception was the wrap dress, still a classic that looks good on most people.
It was definitely different back then!
I remember a corduroy blazer I got for Christmas one year. It was beautiful. I let me friend borrow it and she burned a huge hole in the front from her cigarette. 😞
Oh no, what a heartbreaking story! That must’ve been such a disappointment. Hopefully, it’s still a fond memory despite the mishap!
@ thank you for your comment. I do have fond memories of it. ☺️
I like how the women looked with their halter tops/tube tops. I personally wouldn't nail the look, but they certainly did back then!
Ha. Different times, different styles I guess!
Huckapoo blouses and shirts were also extremely popular!
Great! I'll add it to my notes for a part 2!
And fashion today is so grest? At least we didnt have pink hair and we werent covered in tattoos.
Love the wrap dresses still ❤
Your videos are always so fun to watch and reminisce.
Thanks! Nice to hear my videos are stirring up some good memories.
99% of my entire high school wore Puca shells and desert boots, later earth shoes. We conformed🤣
Conformity never looked so cool. At least everyone was on the same stylish page! 🤣
Dang. Next time I’m definitely having a woman review my video, I thought I knew what I was doing. Sorry about that!
Wait a sec- when did a 3 tailored piece suit and plaid sports jacket become leisure suits? Leisure suits were un-tailored and had a western flair.
My grandmother, a farmer’s wife born in 1900 and living in the rural south, wore wrap dresses when she was a young woman- as did many of her peers. The dresses could easily be adjusted for size and were inexpensive to make. It made sense during an era when birth control was not available and money was scarce.
Sizzler minis w/ matching drawers, y’all. Platform shoes, we sounded like a herd of horses approaching.
The clatter alone announced your arrival like a stylish stampede. What an era! 😄
In the early 70s big collars on shirts had round edges and were generally floral with matching ties. The big pointed Saturday Night Fever collar was from 1977 onwards.
