- Leonid Kharitonov and the Alexandrov Red Army Choir perform the Russian folk song "Ej Uhnem!" ("The Song of the Volga Boatmen" or "Yo, Heave Ho!"), with English subtitles.
This rare and historic program was filmed on location in the former Soviet Union. The brilliant ensemble consisted of about 200 entertainers including a choir and choreographic troupe, who traveled the front lines, entertaining Soviet troops by performing more than 1500 concerts during World War II. This musical film brings to life the essence of Russian music and performance with spectacular singing, dancing and acrobatics.
The shooting of this clip was made in Kurkino, near Moscow by a German operator, former operator of Hitler in 1965.

Everything about this video is perfection - from the video itself which, if restored from the original, has been done marvellously well and with great skill and looks visually stunning, to the performance of Leonid Kharitonov at his VERY best and which has never been bettered by anyone before or since! Not only is he quite beautiful to look at, but his expressive face and voice captures all that is most appealing about the Russian spirit, indomitable, strong, not easily crushed.
I think this is only matched by his singing of The Ballad about Russian Boys, especially the recording from the 7th November 1966 TV show which is also on this channel. In this, Leonid, the choir and the orchestration are all so perfect that you can understand why the audience gave a spontaneous standing ovation at the end.

This is the song of boatmen-workers pulling barges on the Volga river. But in fact, it is about overcoming difficulties. If something doesn't work out, you need to push again. And then again and again. And the power of the spirit will win. The main thing is not to give up, and go forward.
That's the spirit of these older Soviet songs. I think that's why I find the Red Army Choir so compelling, even though I detest the political state they are meant to glorify. Even Russian classical music bleeds with a general feeling of unwavering perseverance. The result of this mentality can sometimes be brutish and boneheaded, but it's inspiring to hear nonetheless.

I am honestly baffled, not just by Kharitonov's amazing voice, but his entire performance in this video! He doesn't move, he doesn't blink, his eyes staring at the absoloute emptiness: as if he flashes back to what he sings about.

To me personally this amazing song don’t just represent the Volga boatman but the whole of mighty Russia. First heard this choir in Malaysia in the 80s on a cassette album hahaha.....ever since then this song to me represents Russia. Powerful, resilient, full of human spirit and a little melancholy:)

I saw this choir when they came to Australia many years ago , but did not really appreciate then the awesome voice Leonid had at the time , guess timing has much to say in appreciation of music . I feel like in the comments, there mostly are people around the age of 25 - 40 - I'm 18 years old and I love this man for what he has done. He is one of few reasons for me to learn russian. Yet, having such powerful and beautiful voice is but a great dream to me.
