  • For years I've been using different windows laptops to trigger Superior Drummer with my electronic drumset. But recently I bought a Macbook Pro and have been using that instead and I've noticed some big differences between the two. So in today's video lets talk about which is better!

Almost every issue you mentioned with your Windows laptop could be negated with a good audio interface. All the spec you mentioned on your high end laptop are near irrelevant if you had a good audio interface and an SSD drive to stream the samples of your drum library. Admittedly the core audio feature of Apple devices (the native interface) does a much better job than any built in interface on a Windows laptop. Apple did a great job of this and can achieve stable low latency results without "needing" a dedicated interface. Trying to use use a Windows laptop without a dedicated audio interface is basically like pissing into the wind. Theres workarounds like ASIO4ALL but that can only do so much. In both cases you'll always have a better experience with a dedicated interface, something like an RME Babyface Pro would far outperform ANY built in sound card on any Apple or Windows device. Once you have a good audio interface doing the heavy lifting then the OS you're running just becomes a personal preference thing. On the flip side, if you dont want to use a dedicated interface then Apple would be a more practical option.

Pro-tip: You can get Mac Minis used (2012 - 2015) for $200 - $400. Small package, great specs.

I’m an agnostic myself: I work with all of them, Windows, Mac, Linux, depending on context.

How do I add more trigger pads with the Alesis strike Se? I don’t want to split anything. Thanks 😊

Love your videos. I migrated from a pearl acoustic kit to electronic about 16 years ago and never looked back. I have a Hart 6.4 upgraded to 7.6 double kick, running through a tf10, with an spds, axis pedals, jobeky and Alesis surge cymbals and a behringer mixer. It’s an awesome setup and the compliments I get about the sound it produces has never made me even think of upgrading the brain etc. Saying that I keep looking at superior drums 3.

I am new at drums and i really enjoy looking at your videos buddy. What is funny is when i look at your old videos and i look at you today; Man ! you're a man now ! You don't look like a teenager anymore ! Cheers ! and thank you again for sharing all this knowledge, advice, etc.. As for my eDrum headphone i choose Sennheiser HD280PRO because of your previous video on the subject and i am just freakin happy !

Great video Justin and I fully agree with you. I switched from a windows pc to an IMac. The best decision I made and although it was a lot of money I didn't regret it. Everything is working so much smoother than before. No issues at all!😎👊👍✌️

What would you say is the minimum amount of ram needed to run recording software and a vst? I've been trying to record with my strike pro SE and my 2011 iMac with only 2gb can't keep up trying to run Reaper and Superior drummer

@65 Drums Hey Justin, I remember you having a Focusrite audio interface. Have you tried that on your PC for midi in / sound out? I have 2i2 connected to a Win10 HP laptop (moderate build nothing stellar) It works very well (using Focusrite driver and not ASIO) almost all the time, and <2ms latency. Only if I get greedy and run google play music at the same time does it have any issues (and still just once in awhile a pop here / cackle there) I've cleared most issues by removing any unnecessary running software. But I've often wondered what I'll get next when I need to replace the PC. Wondering if the mac alone is better than PC with audio interface? If you get some time, maybe you can compare?

Wow your timing is spot on as usual Justin! As you know I’ve been working the hell out of my TD-20x to get recording quality drum sounds for years! Well, I finally bit the bullet and bought SD3 on many recommendations (including yours lol) and I’m smack dab in the middle of this latency issue! I’m running a 4 yo Lenovo with a quad core i7 and 16/GB of RAM which handles my video editing software like a champ (no easy task by far) but running the TD-30 (also recent upgrade) usb direct into the laptop and was getting 8.7 ms. I tried an audio interface and using midi cables. No better! I cleaned out my unneeded crapware and made sure startup programs were minimal. The only improvement was to use the AISO4ALL drivers and I’m down to 5.5ms. I’m still finding it impossible to play to so maybe I have no choice to dig up more $ and bite the bullet! Thanks for all you do my friend!

One question, how many programs you have in your PC compared to the old Mac ?

Another great post, Justin. I'm running an iPad 5th gen and seem to have issues with running video and Cubasis at the same time. Even in split mode, one app works at a time, ne'er the twain shall meet. That's why my YT videos have to be run through my monitor system for the audio portion to be heard. Cubasis won't record direct audio while the camera is recording. I've set the iPad mic to NOT capture, and still nothing goes in to Cubasis even going through the interface directly from the TD-30, and using AU/Audiobus. It's frustrating because I see/hear so many vids with great direct audio, and I can't seem to figure this out, and I'm an audio engineer! (Maybe not a very good one with today's tech, lol). Any suggestions are welcome!!

Do we need asio4all for mac to run SD3 with edrums?
