Katelyn Tuohy 3000m Record Race

- At the 2018 Ocean Breeze Freedom Games, Katelyn Tuohy ran 9:05.26 for the 3000m, lapping much of the field en route. That mark moved her to #2 All-Time, behind only Mary Cain, who went 9:04.51 in 2013. The mark breaks the Ocean Breeze meet record, held by Kate Murphy (Lake Braddock), at 9:14.02. It also breaks the overall Facility Record, previously set by Collegian Katrina Coogan (Georgetown), when she won the Big East Conference Championships in 9:07.44. Coogan would go on to place third overall in the NCAA D1 Finals the following competition, in almost the same time.
In completing her race, Katelyn Tuohy also breaks the Sophomore National Record in the event, previously held by Kelsey Chmiel (Saratoga). Chmiel set that mark of 9:26.28 at the State Championships held at Ocean Breeze last March. Tuohy's mark converts to 9:45.34 for 3200m & 9:48.72 for the full 2-Mile.

It's kind of sad. Young runners used to be taught to move out one lane when they were being lapped on a turn. Not any more, apparently.

I have only today stumbled upon videos of this awesome young athlete. I hope to hear the name, Katelyn Tuohy, at future Olympic Games.
Actually she did get the national record there if you subtract all the extra time she had to expend overtaking slower runners who were hogging the inside lane in the turns.
It never, ever works that way. That just becomes something to talk about. She's only 16 and has a great future ahead of her.

I know there're many events going on at the same time on this indoor track. However...having said that, i could not believe how many people crossing the track that potentially interfering with the 3000m runners! Regardless, Kattelyn Tuohy was awesome!
One of the girls from my school ran in this race and can i just say that no one compares to what katelyn tuohy can do as far as stamina goes

I love KT's courage and positivity even though her pace judgement over the country can be wild. I don't know why but her running style is stronger on the track, in particular she is no over-striding here.

Back (approximately 70 years ago) when the lead runner approached the lagging runner they would yell “track” and the lagging runner would move over giving the lead runner the inside track.

Holy smokes!!! Katelyn finished two laps ahead of everybody, three ahead of some. That's when everybody else in that race got the memo: "Find another sport to compete",I don't think I've ever watched such overwhelming display.
Just because Katelyn was so much better then everyone is a really stupid reason to suggest that everyone else should find another sport. Because by that standard very few people would run!? Most people can never expect to reach such a competitive level.

9:01 in 2019, so just 55sec to World record, at age 17, 36sec to the US female record over 3000m (which was set by Mary Slaney at age 27, so Katelyn has a lot of time to improve her time further on the way at least to the US-record.)

I can't believe this girl. She runs like she's on a scooter. I feel sorry for the other girls running a very good race but being passed multiple times with ease by Katelyn. Even when interviewed she has Class and Charm & seems down to earth. Bless Her & I Hope she does fantastic in College, Olympics and Pros if she decided that.

Wow is Katelyn FANTASTIC! The 3k is one of my favorites. Ed Whitlock, I believe, had the world record for 70,75, 80 & 85. I think I can set it for 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, and 100. (God willing) - Steve Ethridge, a Mature Master runner who will start attempting to set world records once I turn 75, which will be 75 years and six days after D-Day!

Same with Mary Cain, I imagine. When your setting a record, it has to be in competition. And when your running at those times, there are definitely going to be a lot of slower runners.

So for the Uninitiated among us (ie me) how does katecompare to grace ping as a Distance prospect and Sydney Just in general?
Katelyn is the is/was the best high school distance runner of possibly all time: Grace is in a couple of these events i think with Katelyn though she was always much younger. Katelyn is the national record holder for high school in the 5k indoors & outdoors, the 3k and 3200 and mile.

Jmo...considering the circumstances (a known race car against a known field of much lesser competition), would've been a courtesy had the rest of the field kept the inside lane open.
She probably would’ve got the National Record if she didn’t have to go into lane 2 for the last straight

Katelyn is truly a fantastic young talent. Just a point though... ALL races run on an Indoor track must be labelled as such. ie Indoor. They are treated seperately to outdoor records because of the smaller size track and the fact the track is banked.
That girl has one gear. Now imagine how fast national record holder runs.

Oneguysopinion yup it’s not for the runners, it’s because this is last years and they made it seem as if it was this years.
They gave it a thumbs down not because of the race or the runner, but because the thumbnail for this video is a clickbait. People were expecting it to be about some hot athletic girl in close ups, like so many other videos on UA-cam.

The friction on her feet running around that track must be intense.
That is outstanding for high school and a respectable time for college runners. However, she needs to improve her time to under 9 minute to win in college.
she did a 9:01 earlier this year for the 3k against pros so we'll see if she can get under 9:00. unfortunately that race isn't freely available. 9:01.14 won the ncaa title last december 2019 though the record is 8:41 so maybe it was a slow race for position. the 9:05:26 would have put her in 5th in the ncaa race that Jessica Hull won.

It's very unfortunate that high school runners don't understand to move a lane over when they're being lapped by 1st place multiple times. If Tuohy didn't have to cross lanes to pass people each time, she probably would have been able to cut 8-10 more seconds off her time!
