- 1 Handle Tub And Shower From 3 Handle
In this video, we're walking you through a detailed step-by-step guide on converting your three-handle tub and shower faucet into a sleek, more modern, single-handle faucet. It's a comprehensive guide that covers everything you need to know and provides a hands-on demonstration of each step.
In this guide, we'll cover:
How to safely turn off the water supply, ensuring a safe and dry working environment.
The removal of the handles and escutcheons from your existing faucet using simple tools like a screwdriver.
Extracting the stem assemblies from the faucet body - we'll demonstrate how to do this with a wrench.
The installation of a new valve body that's compatible with a single-handle faucet - this may involve some intricate work including cutting out a section of the wall to access the plumbing.
How to install a new showerhead and tub spout that complement your single-handle faucet.
Connecting the new valve body to your existing plumbing, with potential soldering or use of compression fittings.
Installing the new single-handle faucet onto the valve body.
Finally, turning your water supply back on and testing the new faucet for any potential leaks or operational issues.
This process does require some basic plumbing knowledge, so if you're new to this, it's perfectly okay to call in a professional plumber. However, if you're up for a DIY challenge, we're here to make the process as easy as possible for you!

Very timely & well done video filled with great tips as usual - many thanks, keep 'em coming Bro! 😀
Will do. I appreciate your support my friend
What’s the labor cost of that kind of project here in California or in other states. Any ball park number? Thank you
Cement
Excellent video !! Thank you 😊
Awesome I appreciate you 🙏
I don't even need the information in this video but I still watched the whole thing. Very detailed video, clear audio, and informational. Keep it up!
Thank I appreciate you🙏
If you had access to the pipes and valve from the rear, why did you cut such a huge opening in the tiled front of wall that then required the oversized renovation cover plate. Thanks!
@@whynotdiy333 I did that to center the new valve, going from three handle tub and shower valve to single the opening is different 👍
Stripped threads replacing a valve seat. Going to get into it anyway. This video just changed where I was taking it. Upgrade time. You rock! Sub
I appreciate you. Thank you for the sub.
Thank you. Very thorough video commentary for someone (me) who knows nothing. I really appreciate the detail.
👍
I will change the battery in that smoke alarm
Got it . LOL 😁
Thanks for posting this video! I also have an old house with lathe/plaster walls so the fact that you had to use all those 90's to stick the valve forward give me a good idea of what I might face.
Glad I could help. I appreciate you🙏
Same her lathe plaster walls. Hard to replace. Yuck.
Great and informative video, thanks. I have almost the same situation, except my tub spout is only 4.5" down from the old three hole valve. Not exactly sure yet how I am going to work around that situation since raising the new valve will present new problems. Got some great ideas from your video though!
Nice thank you
I recently change one. Fortunately the home owner had a box of extra tiles. I raised if to 48 ins and replace the tiles and cover the holes. Oh btw I would have use my grinder or sawsaw to that pipe
👍I appreciate you 🙏
Haha I have this exact bathroom... the 50's tile (but in green) and the thick cement behind it. We're doing what was supposed to be a "facelift" remodel but now I'm learning we should probably replace the 3-handle valve and I'm overwhelmed.
Great video. Very informative and detailed. Will be a reference when I attempt to switch my old and worn faucets.
Nice. I appreciate your feed back.
My house was built in 1994. 2-handles in my stand-alone shower and 3 handles in the tub/shower. I’m having my bathrooms refilled so not trying to to save the old wall. All of my bathrooms are built without access to the plumbing in the back of the tub and/or shower. Once the wall is open should a reputable remodeler be able to get to the pipes needed to covert my 2 and 3 handles to 1?
Thanks for the video. Very helpful.

Thank you for reaching out and I'm glad you found the video helpful!
To answer your question, yes, once the wall is opened, a reputable remodeler should indeed be able to access the necessary plumbing to convert your 2 and 3-handle systems to a 1-handle system. This conversion is quite common in bathroom renovations and it usually involves installing a new mixing valve. The mixing valve, which is what the single handle controls, regulates the blend of hot and cold water that comes out of your faucets or shower head.
Please bear in mind, however, that while this conversion is technically possible, there can be variables which might increase complexity or cost. For instance, the spacing between the hot and cold water supply lines may need to be adjusted to fit the new mixing valve. Also, your current plumbing may be made from materials that require special care or additional work to modify.
In addition, if you have any code requirements or particular brands/models in mind for the new fixtures, you should discuss this with your remodeler upfront to ensure compatibility with your existing plumbing.
I hope this information is helpful and I wish you the best of luck with your bathroom remodeling project!
Thanks for the video. I was wondering if I could do something like this, but I now see it’s over my head! 😳🖖
👍
Very informative! Great details video 😊😊
@@nancyguzman327 thank you I appreciate you 🙏
Thank you for making these plumbing videos. This is project is exactly what I will be doing in my aging home. Now I have a grasp on what I need to accomplish the job and how to do it.
Did u did it ?
Wondering the same thing
How'd it come out???
@@DeadSpace014 we need a second part of the story lol
I need to upgrade my bathtub faucets and the tub; the whole bathroom actually. Im DIYing my house and thought Id give this a try. This video let me know whole process in detail and now I know I need to hire professionals.
I'm glad you found the video informative and it helped guide your decision-making process. Renovating a bathroom is a significant project, especially when it comes to replacing plumbing fixtures, which can get quite complex. It's very wise of you to acknowledge the need for professional help, as this will ensure a high-quality and safe installation. The benefit of using professionals is that they have the required skills and experience to prevent any future leaks or damage that could potentially result in costly repairs.
Remember, while DIY projects can be fulfilling and save money, certain jobs require specific expertise. There's no shame in admitting when it's time to call the pros. It's actually a sign of wisdom to recognize that there are limits to what we can do ourselves, and it's better to get things done right the first time than to risk having to fix mistakes later on.
You've already taken a significant step by researching and understanding the process. This will enable you to better communicate with the professionals you hire and ensure your needs are met. Good luck with your bathroom renovation!
This guy is definitely a legit plumber. videos are useful But they were kind of little things left out that would definitely mess up a DIY if they were doing this
good to know! haha. I'm wondering if I should attempt this!!
What kind of walls were these if not drywall?
Do they make a cover for a triangular setup? Rather than the spout and handles all in a row.
Sorry, but I'm not sure 🤔
Had a rehab at a 110 unit complex and they put 70% of the moen posi temp valves in upside down. It sucks because I always forget to look and see what way the carts installed when I replace the cartridges. Luckily I found a ona puller makes the job quick and easy
List of supplies?
I didn't know about those hole cover plate
That makes this video very useful 👍
👍
Hello, do you have a video of this same repair but without access from the back wall of the faucet, because I have the outside wall with bricks behind my shower faucet
Sorry,🥺 but not yet
Would it help to score the tile first to get a less sloppy hole and prevent damaging the wall?
Your right, but this is not the standard tile wall that most people are used to. This wall is all cement with a tile overlay. These homes were built during the cold war.
They're built like war destruction-proof Shelters very thick wall floor basement heavy-duty reinforce steel cement floors and walls. and the homeowner was doing a lot of the work himself. I was just limited to the plumbing. Could it have been done differently? Yep $$$$$$$$$$$
I'm going to strip out the single handle thing the plumber put in, and install a 3 handle fixture. Right now it is either crank the water heater or goose bumps.
I do understand, but the single handles shower and tub faucet are to protect kids and disabled people from getting burn by turning on just the hot by itself. This is why you don't see 2 and 3 handle tub and shower faucets in newer homes built after the early 80's they have been outlawed. The single handle faucet will not turn on if hot and cold are not mixed. Making it very hard for anyone to burn themselves with just hot water.
replace that fire alarm battery while you're there lol
Your right 👍
How did you get back there? I. Have to remove the tile.
There are times that the shower wall is back to back with a closet, but in some cases😖not
Can you do this same work from the front? I do not have access to the back without tearing out a wall but I am completely redoing the surround and tub so I have the front side open.
Yes you can.
Great job on the tub and shower valve I've installed 10 or 12 moen valve not a big fan ,but I've installed 100's of delta valves I like them better but some don't.
I like Delta valves, but a big fan of moen. Both great Valves and popular in the trades
The problem with Delta and Moen is not their valves but their ugly cover plates. It took a while, but I tracked down a beauty made by Symmons.
Can you do this in a mobile home? The moens that I have looked at say not for Mobil home! My 97 year old mother cannot turn handles any longer.
I see. Yes some older mobile homes are different. The walls in some older mobile homes are to thin to fit a standard tub and shower valve in. I would have to see what your working with. Sorry 😐
Helpful video. I do have a question. What did you do with the original Hot and Cold lines? Maybe Cap them off? Looks like they totally disappeared !
I wonder about egg shaping the elbows. I guess the fit must tighten up when soldered.
Yes, that's right
do you think a stick lighter might would work in place of a blow torch... for us DIY-ers?
Lol 🤣 yes your right. Dang plumber. I appreciate your feedback. Funny, but a great question. 👍
Do the 90s have to be soldered or do they sell that 4 way with treads or maybe for pro press
This video is over 20 years old. Didn't have propress then😖but yes they do make this tub and shower valve in propress now🤔hard to find, but it's out there. No you don't have to solder any more☺️
Thanks for the video!!!
Awesome you got it
Do you know what valve to use if you didn’t want the tub connection?
Looking to do this... this video is very helpful
Nice. Thank you.
They make Dremmel bits and tile chisels that would make the demo a whole lot more accurate , neat , symmetrical and therefore better looking...in my estimation , may have saved time as well...kind of a win-win scenarioo...as a pro - this matters to me.
25 years ago. This is a old video. Thank you for the info.
A couple things I disagree with: 1. The only way to 100% leak test is plugging both the tub spout and shower head pipe. 2. Clean the old caulk around tub spout. Otherwise, nice video!
Congratulations everything excelent explication and place cammera good too cause its very important see all work thaks
I appreciate your kind comment.
This is a great video!!!
Thank you I appreciate your support
I cannot access from the back,
Sorry, but yes some times you may have to make an access 😞
how much to hire plumber to do this ? parts ? labor ? Thanks
Depends on if you have galvanized or copper pipes. We were quoted $400 for copper - up to $1000 if needing to deal with old galvanized pipes. That included all parts and labor except the rough in valve.
Hey, all these tub fixture videos say I have to access behind the plumbing. I have no idea how to do that or how to figure it out. Any tips? My house was built in the 1920’s but the bathroom has been “remodeled” (not very well, in my opinion).
Can you tell me what kind or brand of all the products you used? This is exactly what i need for my bathroom. Thanks in advance
Yes you can find it all here. 👍www.amazon.com/shop/howtoplumbing?listId=3MIYHWNLETE0G&ref=inf_list_own_howtoplumbing
How much that cost to have done
Labor is around $800.00 To $1500.00 more or less. This job was done free of charge at the time over 20 years ago family. 😬
Why wouldn’t you cut it before hand ?
Where is your Amazon store?
Check out this page from How To Plumbing www.amazon.com/shop/howtoplumbing
The question is How did you get back there to see all the pipes?
There was a closet on the other side with a trap door opening in the wall to tub and shower faucet.
Asbestos?
Thank you very much for this video! I found you on Google and just subscribed. You've answered my questions regarding upgrading a legacy bathtub/shower combo to a one-handle style. I was hoping to avoid having to solder pipes since I don't want to accidentally burn my house down. My current setup has a diverter spout and two handles, but a third handle like the before setup in this video seems to perform the same function as the pull-up part of the diverter faucet. Can a three-handle set with a non-diverter spout be interchanged with a two-handle set with a diverter spout? I'm finding a better selection of bathtub shower sets that I like with three handles rather than two. What would be involved in changing from a two-handle to a three-handle setup aside from having to make a hole for the third handle? The tub currently has diabolically ugly fake tile paneling around it so I don't care about messing it up. I plan to replace it with subway tile anyway but would like to get the tub hardware replaced before installing new tile. Thank you for any insights you can share.🙏
I appreciate your nice comment🙏

How much would a job like this normally cost if there was no problems?
$700 to $1200 more or less
@@theartofplumbing okay 👍🏽
Another great video 👍
Why not cut the tile with an angle grinder with tile blade instead of chipping it out?
Grinders can put out a lot of dust.
@@theartofplumbing true, you’d have to hold a vaccuum next to the blade.
Can you still use the pipes in will for the shower and tub spouts by running pex from them
I prefer separate hot and cold handles. They are more useful.
From A homeowner perspective: put mat, heavy duty protection on floor of tub to prevent damage from tools, stuff that falls; protect tile from damage, cut tile instead of hammering to control better, clean tile before installing tub spout. Use better products that are brass fittings rather than plastic valves that don't last long. Use care not to scratch surface of cover plate or tile. Use some silicone caulking around cover plate to prevent water intrusion. Always install equal or better quality than original materials, facet and shower head. Home owner will be unhappy later.
Good demonstration overall!
Helpful.
Thank you. I appreassiat you
You're very welcome! I'm glad I could help. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out. Your support and appreciation mean a lot. Have a great day!
I would have taken 2 minutes to change out the battery on that smoke detector.
Yeah
Sooo...I'll be needing a plumber inside of doing this myself.
🤔
I don’t have a wall to cut from behind
Dang. Sorry. I understand 😖
Great video brother I wish they were all that easy I'm working on one now back to back that's a freaking hassle I hate having to take out the galvanized riser but the existing trim plate was humongous in order to have my valve sit right I had to remove it if not it would have been a big gap between the new cover plate and the existing hole. I have no clue in hell how I'm going to strap the shower head either LOL I guess they're just going to mud it in when they patch the sheetrock 🤦😝😂
Lol 😂 thank you for the comment, and by the way one trick I use to Anker valves, some time I use great stuff expandle foam. Just saying👍
@@theartofplumbing I know about that my dad told me he did it before LOL what I ended up doing on this one I glued two inch and a half nineties together but it up and then stuck the hubs towards the other wall and then just screwed the drop out into the 90s I mean you can't Yank on it but at least it's not flopping all over the place LOL
Plumber just quoted me $1200 to change a three valve shower into one
Yeah. It can get costly.
Around how much cost to do a job like this with a plumbing company?
9 to 12 hundred more or less
Nice 👍
I appreciate you.
Well it’s easy if you have access from the back. I don’t
I understand. There not all this easy.
You never need to pull the stems out
I rather to sweat an adapter is much better no leaking!
👍
How much for that type of job?
Labor and material. Depending on we're you live. Between $800 and $2,000
I will rip off the wall of the bathroom
Yes, that's what I wanted to do here myself, but the home owner didn't want to renovate the restroom. Mager work 😖 you could see some one has been in this wall before.
Looks like a ton of work. Yuck!

During the Cold War era, many homes in the United States, including those in University City, MO, were built with features resembling b shelters. This was primarily due to the widespread fear of nuclear attacks. Homeowners and builders incorporated reinforced basements and underground shelters to provide protection from potential nuclear fallout12.
These shelters were designed to withstand blasts and radiation, often featuring thick concrete walls, air filtration systems, and emergency supplies. While not all homes had these features, it was a common trend during that time to ensure some level of preparedness against nuclear threats2.
Ok, so how do you do this without knocking out the entire back of the wall - since the entire back of my wall is the exterior of the house????
😲 wow. Yeah that's tough., but I have had to go into outside walls as well. Lucky me I had a buddy that was a brick layer.
