In fact I think creativity is truly demonstrated from a reasonable understanding of the subject area, recommend Mastery by Robert Green. Even from the perspective of a musician you must first be able to at a base level have an understanding of musical notes, from that understanding you can then express yourself, through expression and experience your ability and creativity leve improves
