I'm still 'traumatized' by movies like Schindler's List, Amistad, and the Roots series, I just don't watch movies like this anymore. Sure they're good... but sheesh! I get it. People are fucked up. Just watch the news and you'll be reminded of it over and over again. Ive learned my lesson. This movie was terrible. It seemed forced, inauthentic, and failed to connect to the viewer (in my experience). 12 Years a Slave was an excellent movie. It was extremely difficult to watch because of the impact it made on viewers. If you’re going to do a movie about slavery, you put the best actors, directors, and screen writers into it. It’s a topic that deserves nothing less. This movie fell WAY below the bar for me. Couldn’t care less about what the actor did in his own time. The movie is a flop. We could have gotten a chance to learn about Peters life, and his past. Instead we got a French/German sounding Will run through the forest for 2 hours and cuddle with a gator.

I recently watched "All Quiet on Western Front" on Netflix.I was so impressed with the film's take on the World War I classic novel and difference from prior film adaptations.I highly recommend this film and I didn't mind reading English subtitles and listening to it in it's original German language because it gave it more authenticity. It is a long movie and extremely violent and I thought that it should had been released theatrically but it does do a better job of offering a different perspective on a true historical event than "Emancipation" does.

Just realized I’m a white woman giving a thumbs down to a movie about slavery but hear me out! Your review was spot on. And I think the reason we like Django in Chain and watch it again is because although the main character is in a horrible situation and for all intensive purpose; is a victim. It doesn’t feel like we’re watching a movie about a victim just suffering. He kicks ass along the whole way. Thank you! I said this very same thing myself. If the movie focused on the macropolitical impact that this character (Whipped Peter) had on the abolition movement (he became the poster child and reignited national interest in abolishing slavery) it would have been a refreshing perspective from a black protagonist set during this era. Instead, they relegated this film to the long list of runaway-slave narratives and completely missed the opportunity to show the *real* story behind this important historical figure.
Instead of making another derivative runaway-slave film, I'd *love* to see a film from the perspective of a black battlefield surgeon contending with racism while he's amputating Union soldier's limbs or a black lawyer contending with racism as he's trying to secure escaped slaves their freedom, or the perspective of one of the most important figureheads in our nation's history: Frederick Douglas. Where's *HIS* movie?

Unlike other enslaved movies based on events and people that were created. It was based on the man named Peter, who actually existed as his photo has circulated the globe. I think you are over emphasizing your dislike of this film and frankly in my opinion not a good critique. This film was very well done and more than just a “slave movie” …I’m really wondering if you really watched the entire movie? This movie is one of Will Smiths best acting roles. I think you are wrong and what were you looking for a softer enslaved movie where you get pacified, please! This movie showed how brutal war and slavery is and will always be. Sounds like you have a problem with history. So, you want to deny it ever happened? How come your critique seems to be about denial of events yet you are behind Django that is fictional. Yet this was based more on reality than Django.

@@THATGUYTALKSMOVIES Thanks for your response. I’d like to say you can always change your perspective and see this movie as not about the enslaved as more telling someone’s lived experience thru film. Yes, it was during the enslaved time but it is more about the man named Peter and his quest for freedom and all he went through. It was more inspiring that one person could go through so much and still be “fit for duty” to fight for his freedom. What a real strong man he was. Like you said, films based on slavery aren't ones I'd put on for entertainment. They have an important message and story but are hard to watch once, let alone a 2nd time. Django I think is an exception because Tarantino incorporated elements of action and old westerns etc. It even has the theme song from the Trinity films I used to watch, so it's more than just a slave film in some ways imo.

Sure, and once these imaginary “pay outs” take place, everyone will just focus on moving forward as opposed to insinuating that something that took place 150+ years ago has impact on people of today, right?
Should Germany pay every Jewish person reparations too? Or maybe the Romans and Greeks should pay Europeans reparations as well. Why stop there, Egyptians enslaved people for thousands of years but I haven’t heard any rumblings about them having to pay out anyone.
It’s such a pathetic and desperate push for a pay out that will never happen and is completely asinine to pretend like it’s justified.
Capitalism has existed and conquered the United States and everyone in the past 100 years has had the same opportunities to thrive. Anyone claiming different is either a lazy bum or just a crying infant that isn’t smart enough to figure out how to gain and build wealth.
Either smarten up or work harder, if you’re willing to do one or the other, you can build wealth. Handing out a bunch of unjustified money will only be mishandled and solve absolutely nothing. Anyone that is comfortable with lying and acting like it makes sense to pay someone for something that took place throughout the entire world, is so full of it and nothing but a wanna be scammer. Just imagine if those people would invest that energy into working or building a business.
They’d be retiring before they are 50 and spend the next 30 years living the good life but no one is going to hand it to you so just let go of that fantasy.

There’s a reason this particular subject is no longer pulling the numbers that movies like this, once did. The actual stories have been told and now they are just retelling the same story but trying to introduce some unrealistic and predictable sub plot.
This couldn’t have been a worst pick for Will Smith to attempt to redeem himself with. Thankfully, the viewers are starting to be heard and movies like this will continue to bomb and become a thing of the past.

Your whole premise is silly. I can think of 4 slave movies, 13 Years, Django, Harriet and this one. There's probably more but why are you acting like we've been inundated with a deluge of slave movies. There's been far more movies about the Civil War, WWII, Vietnam. Of those historical events listed, I would argue NONE have had as significant effect on our history as slavery. We might make an exception for the Civil War, however that war was a Biproduct of Slavery. In fact, I'd argue that pro-slavery movies have had more of an impact on our Zeitgeist then the Anti-slavery movies as Birth of a Nation and Gone with the Wind our two of the most successful movies in history both of which popularized the "Lost Cause" myth that is still prevalent to this day. I think an opposing viewpoint is called for and necessary.
If anything, there should be more movies about slavery. As long as they're somewhat historically accurate and entertaining, why not? If we can have 26 MCU movies we can have AT LEAST that many movies about slavery.

It's such a serious subject matter that one hopes any film being made on the matter doesn't just....make a movie to try and grab an award while not really putting thought into exactly what story they're telling and how they're telling it. I couldn't agree more! I found this critique more of a relentless diatribe against so-called "slave movies" than a critical review of the movie, "Emancipation." I saw the movie. It was pretty good, but not a particularly noteworthy standout in the genre. I vehemently disagree with your assessment of the cinematography, however. In fact, the look of the film I felt was really outstanding.
Look. I get it. A lot of our folks are tired of the "trama porn" that slave movies can be. No one chooses to be triggered while going to the movies. But if you're going to take up the mantle of film critic, at least be fair. You hate this movie, then say so and tell us why. That's fine. But to pretty much completely disregard the entire genre because you personally find the genre not to your individual taste or disliking is not fair. It disrespects the efforts of the artists' work.
And as it relates to the making of slave movies, if an artist writes a script, secures backing, and gets to makes a move. Then that artist gets to determine what the movie's going to be about--whether any of us likes the subject matter or not.
