The video is about structural racism, at the beginning of the video we see she running with the sound of police in the background, that's when she witnessed the murder that appears after in the video.
She hides in the church and fell sleep there, and in the dream the saint comes to life, encouraging her to come out and testify in defense of the innocence of the black guy who was unjustly arrested.
The burning crosses ✝️🔥 are a reference to that clan that wears white clothes and preaches supremacy, I don't want to mention their names but you know who are they… It is a very symbolic video, where Madonna used her privileges and popularity to talk about a very important subject.

Madonna reigns when it comes to placing human injustices in the forefront: racism through police brutality and the false representation in organized religion. Equal rights for the LGBTQIA community, human sexuality, for gun control and for ageism. She has always been shunned by the public for whatever reason. Yet by refusing to give in and standing her ground for who she is, makes her the icon she is!

G'day it's Steven from down under again
A very provocative and meaningful music video that I recall at the time was poorly received by certain groups within the community, the types of groups that like to misread things and wrongly be outraged without understanding the subject matter.
This was one of Madonna's most successful hits worldwide and is undoubtedly one of the all time biggest hits in pop music history.
There's a lot to take in and comprehend but the more you listen to it the more you like it, I've been enjoying this song for over thirty five years and I never get tired of it.

Madonna is such a prolific and legendary artist. She was/is as big (back then) as Taylor Swift is now and she (Madonna) did it all without social media. I remember hearing about this video and the controversy over it. She has been such an amazing ally to SO many groups. I wish today's young people would recognize just how hard Madonna fought for rights, for AIDS, for the LGBTQ community and other communities. She's a phenomenal human being.

Saint Porres, the patron saint of mixed races is the Saint in the video. The saint is crying from the injustice that he knows she is feeling. Actually there are two parts of the video mixed into one. After the Saint leaves she falls into a deep sleep to find clarity. So she wasn't doing anything in the church but dreaming, and when it goes to the other part she is still dreaming. Then she wakes up and realizes what she must do. Confess and let them know the scene she saw, and the black man was innocent. This is sort of a BLM before anyone in the artistry world would go against the grain and put out there. This is why Madonna is the Queen of Pop, She never cared about the industry, but instead used her artistic integrity to speak out on many issues.

The song and video was both a debate with Madonna's own strict catholic upbringing and a statement against racism like racial profiling, KKK (the burning crosses), white woman and black saint etc. Kissing feet and bleeding eyes are part of catholic mysticism, like the stigmata in the hands. The video offenended many, many people, especially fundamentalistic christians and the Vatican wanted to excommunitcate Madonna. Pepsi canceled its sponsorship for the upcoming tour and draw back the harmeless commercial used for Pepsi's advertising campaing (however Madonna could keep the 5 Mill $). One year later in 1990 Pope John Paull II called Madonnas Blond Ambition Tour "one of the most satanic shows in the history of humanity".

The incendiary imagery of burning crosses featured in Madonna's "Like a Prayer" music video evokes the historically oppressive symbolism associated with the Ku Klux Klan, once the preeminent hate group globally. This organization was notorious for its intimidation tactics, including the placement of flaming crosses on the properties of African-American individuals as a method of terror designed to enforce racial segregation. The video itself stands as a potent artifact, highlighting the gravity of these actions. It is regrettable that the depth of your comprehension does not extend to the profound significance embedded within these visuals. This oversight underscores a broader issue: the nuances of intent and interpretation can often become obscured, leading to a disconnection between action and understanding.

    @mtg1263 2 місяці тому +6

I’ve been catching your Madonna reactions and appreciate your honest, albeit uninformed, opinions. I know this song and video was so far before your time but you cannot imagine how controversial this video was. I know you said it had a racial component but literally the whole video dealt with racism. This was BLM way before anyone really knew it was a thing. Most of it was a dream sequence that led her to do the right thing. In this case she was telling the cop that he was innocent and setting him free. Not bailing him out…lol. Also the significance of the burning crosses cannot be emphasized enough. It is (or was) probably the most visible form of racism in the 50’s and 60’s and perpetrated by the KKK. Unfortunately it still exists in similar forms today usually carried out by white supremacists and neo-nazis. The burning cross was the most offensive and powerful racist symbol that existed, especially to Christians and Blacks. It was used to intimidate and terrify black families usually when they tried to move into “white neighborhoods”. The cross was set on fire in the families’ front yard in the middle of the night by a bunch of hooded and robed men with the intent of driving that family out. If the family stood their ground, it usually resulted in a lynching or some other horrendous form of hate. Finally, the fact that this video was put out by arguably the most famous female pop star in the world not only taking on this topic but kissing a black man/saint as well, had people loosing their shit!! This was only 20 years after the Civil Rights movement. Sorry about the length of this post and the “lecture”. Please don’t take it as any kind of disrespect. It was hard to fathom how any person, black or white, would not know this particularly awful time of US history. And you have not been the only one. A lot younger people viewing this video also don’t have a clue. As far as it being a “play” I think it was just a different way of ending the video. Music videos were in their infancy back in ‘84.

I fully understand that seen now, 35 years later, the video turns out to be something strange and with a somewhat slow pace. And even more if it is the first time you see it, tired and asleep, and without knowing the story, as the fans we know it perfectly and we tell it to anyone who wants to listen to us. But this video, 35 years ago, caused a stir that has not been repeated in the history of pop How to offend all the intolerant of 🇺🇸 in just five minutes. Madonna surprises and provokes; that's part of her job. But minor artists who have not seen the power of permanence or the influence of the Queen of Pop simply press our buttons on a superficial level, without having much to say or leaving us with a lot to chew. Once the noise disappears, you can savor the artistic value and meaning of Madonna's work. At the heart of this legendary clip, under all its theatricalism, is a message about civil rights that has not lost any of its relevance three decades later. "Like a Prayer" deserves its reputation as one of the best music videos of all time. In its intense 5 minutes, we witness a group assault on a woman and her murder at the hands of that group of whites, the unjust imprisonment of the black man who tries to help her, stigmas in Madonna's hands, her ecstasy with a black saint and, an image for the history of pop: Madonna dancing and singing this song in front of burning crosses. And there's the core. The church is the least, although as has always happened in history, they sided with the oppressor and joined the boycott of the artist and whistleblower. "I knew we were pressing some big buttons, but I underestimated the influence and intolerance of the fundamentalist religion and racism in this country and in the world," says director Mary Lambert. Then Pepsi would come and that is that apart from the crosses of the Ku Klux Klan, Madonna burned the foundations of a society that was and continues to be racist. The images of Madonna between burning crosses symbolize the absolute transgression of popular culture in pursuit of its political significance and is, with high probability, the most sagacious anti-racist manifesto that a white pop artist has ever devised.
At the end of the video, the church is revealed as a prison, and the prison in turn is revealed as a theater. The moral of the story: everyone is a stage, and some things never change

The song and the video are two completely different things. The song is a mystical poem, mystical poems depict love for God as a romantic and passionate love (mystical poetry goes back to the 13th century). The video on the other hand is about racial profiling, it's like Black Lives Matter way before Black Lives Matter, when it wasn't a popular movement. The song and the video come together with the burning crosses scene (which talks about religious ecstasy but also about the KKK), representing a poem by mystical poet Saint John of The Cross called "Living Flame of Love" where he talks to God as his lover. And also the song and video come together in the scene where Madonna kisses the black saint at the church (one of the most controversial images of the 20th century). And at the end you can see that the black man racially profiled by the police takes the place of the black saint, and the police station takes the place of the church. That's when Madonna's character recognizes the meaning of the religious mythology in a real life event, and that's when she knows what to do, which is coming forward for justice.
Madonna was excommunicated by the Vatican because of this video.

This song has become Madonna's most iconic song even with her vast catalog of songs including epics like Vogue and Into The Groove. I remember in 1989, people who didn't like Madonna loved this song. And today it's been sung on music competitions like The Voice and XFactor even though it's not really a "vocalist's" song.
Regarding the video, many appreciate it as it opened a lot of discussion regarding structural racism, something I don't believe any other artist before Madonna had openly presented in their work. This is why a lot of people appreciate the video and probably connect to the song. But that was Madonna's forte, blasting the doors down of a lot of controversial topics that many, especially Americans, felt very uncomfortable with.

Where to start😂😅. Well, this is the first time ive seen someone leaving indiferent or clueless after watching this video. First, i was kind of shocked to see that you didnt know about the burning crosses, and the kkk clan, they were responsable for some of the most horrible crimes against black people back in the 50s, and i really mean horrible, i watched this for the 1st time back in 89 when i was just a latin american kid, and i knew about the kkk. So that alone speaks about a social tabu, even more in those days when racism was not condemned as now. Second, up until that moment, the visual language of every female (or even male) artist never included anything related with racism, sex, religion, homosexuality, etc. What this woman did in that time in history was just impossible. Music videos in those days were almost childish, nodody wanted to even touch anything remotely related with politics, or anything important really. I remember it was global news, even here in Chile, so far away from the US. The like a prayer album was ok, but it was the video that changed the public opinion about Madonna forever, and made people wonder for the first time in history about the role of a pop female artist in society. In fact, sadly, so many years later, the death of George Floyd and the Black lives matter protests reminded me about one of the many messages within this music video. In the end, this video, at least this one, is one of those rare cases in wich the artist presents a piece of visual that acts as a painting, cause it is up to you and your own experience of the world and life, the interpretation youll get from it. But believe me, this video shacked the earth and changed a lot of things forever.
PD: if you want to see good stuff you can watch (without reactions) Blood of eden and Digging in the dirt from Peter Gabriel, Freedom 90 from George Michael, directed by David Fincher, All is full of love from Bjork, directed by Chris Cunningham, Bedtime story from Madonna, directed by Mark Romanek, and Oh Father, directed also by David Fincher.

If you don't interrupt the video every moment to talk, you would be able to understand what it's about...

Welp videos get blocked when I don't pause so it's either that or I cut random parts of the vid out :) Also read the pinned comment

" No, no I'm not really happy with that song " and you don't half let your audience know it!
You dissed it from start to finish, maybe less talk during and more taking in what you are looking at, might help.

As a reaction channel you need to pause it or you get copyrighted so I have to. And I always roast people in my reactions. That’s part of my style lol

I've been watching reaction videos for years, you don't need to point out the need to pause or why, as for always roasting people in your reactions, well that might account for the amount of subscribers you have.
I don't know of anyone who watches a reaction video of their favorite artists to see them getting roasted, what are you thinking?

Im thinking that people like you need to chill and stop being so serious all the time. Everyone needs a good laugh from time to time. If you go around life constantly serious then we would be in Gotham

      People like me?
That comment right there says a lot more about your personality than it does mine.
It's called criticism, I never imagined you would be so Thin-Skinned.
I'm done with this now, I wouldn't want to permanently scar that fragile ego of yours.

Take some time and do some self reflection pal :) I'm just a reaction channel. Sorry that I hurt your feelings

Sadly, your reaction, along with perhaps your comprehension level is not very deep.

your simple intelligence makes me worried about the next generation. stop reacting on what you have no clue on, and keep liking those swiftie posts.

You should actually think different about that. You should be happy that I'm taking the time to learn about Madonna and everything else revolving around her. Sorry this video upsets you but it is what it is
