Just heard 1st time 2024! Caught a clip of it playing in background of "Mornings w Maria" national news & saw Duncan Shiek credit, so wow gotta check it👏 Loved his debut hit sooo much still do!
I chilled out with Duncan and Duane Lavold at Duane's loft in Chinatown one night with some mutual friends. Such a huggable guy. Duane was a bit of a mess, but such a fascinating individual. You kinda got the vibe that Duncan kept an eye on Duane. I wish I could've got to know them better, but I moved to England with my girlfriend a few weeks later.
Oh my God, I miss the 90s. We had some money in our pockets, we were young and healthy, we could still go out with our friends to dinner and drinks for under $25. A movie date and coffee afterwards was, like $15 at the most. Gas was $1.50 or less a gallon. I want it all back.
I can't describe it but there's this weird nostalgic feeling in my chest everytime I hear this song. No other song has ever made me feel this type of way.
i read some story about Duncan Sheik's accomplishments on the American Songwriter web page and found this song and the dance version and it kicks ASS! Greetings from Nicaragua!
2000s was a great follow up to the 90s. Just like what most people in the comments, this is a great roadtrip track together with Dakota (Stereophonics), What Took You So Long (Emma Bunton), For What It's Worth (The Cardigans), Breathe (Michelle Branch), Sing (Travis), No Rain (Blind Melon), Shakespeare In Love (Layla Kaylif) and 1979 (Smashing Pumpkins).
Thank You Duncan Sheik! What An Excellent Song. Also D.S. And His Video Film Crew Were Very Gracious With A Lot Of Camera Shots Of All The Extras In The Karoke Bar Scene. Also The Beginning Were He Is Giving Himself A Pep Talk In The Restroom Before Going Too Sing On Stage, Priceless!
I remember when this just came out. 16 years old mall ratting days, eating burgers, iced tea and bowling with friends. Back before when social media was unheard of and the internet was all about chatrooms and forums.
I remember some one made a trance remix to this & I fell in love with this song when I was like 12 or 13 I’d always hope my future wife would love this song as much as I do
This song has a special memory for me. One of my friends in highschool (class of 2007) was killed just days after our high school graduation. They were out celebrating and were hit by a truck and died instantly. This song played at her beautiful funeral, during a moment where they showed pictures of her life. Rest in Peace. She was an incredibly bright star that is missed by many. This song brings me both joy and sadness and I often well up with tears thinking about the life snuffed out short. Never take anything for granted.
truly a unique person! what stands out is he's lyrics he's positive, course changing ideals heck on my own opinion he's level of music is like Sting's ! self denial vs reality topic.
BACK TO THE OLD DAYS. I REALLY LOVED THIS SONG SO MUCH. THE FIRST TIME THAT I HEAR THIS SONG IS WHEN I'M STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL NOW IM ALREADY 29 STILL MISSING THOSE LATE 2000'S SONGS COMPARE TO THE LATEST ONE.
Why this song was not a huge pop hit is totally mind-boggling. Duncan Sheik gave Atlantic Records the big pop record they were clamoring for and then...nothing. Ah, the major label music industry. Gotta love em.
+Mario Tarradell this is probably one of the most perfectly written and composed pop songs in 20 years. It's almost a companion piece to "Islands In The Sun" by Weezer. I think being released after 9/11 just found it being lost in uncertain times.
I read somewhere that he didn't like fame or the industry so it was him who decided to call it quits. Although the musical styling is very much pop music the man has a thoughtful poetic writing and verse structure.
This is a motivational song, whenever I have a bad day or I am caught in a bad situation I always to make myself happy and not lose control of my anger & have my glass half-full
Nick Garcia Because now its all about business and marketing schemes. Walking billboards for brands so the youth can make "them" rich. Somehow everybody forgot about talent, creativity and most importantly... MUSIC.
It's not a sad or angry song, or meant to be ironic (like a pretty song about obsession in the Police's "Every Breath You Take"). Like the lyrics say "There are some who say there are so many things I need" but he chooses not to absorb so much of what he hears - he chooses to be content with himself and his life - and not believe the "Conspiracy of Happiness" - what other people think they need to be happy. It's a simple song of emotional independence.
Surprising that he seems to be forgotten about. He hasn’t released any special edition cds. None of his albums are available on vinyl. A shame as he was quite good and this is one of my favorites of the era
just a fantastic song and a simply great video. when you're down, watch and try as hard as you can not dance and not to smile. (Because, as you already know, it's f****** impossible!)
16 years ago i met my husband in a pub on karaoke night. He was and still is the epitome of this song. Pretending like nothing was wrong because there are worse things and even though his wife had left him and taken everything including his two year old daughter and his dignity, he would be just fine. except he knew he wasn't. He still has issues with acknowledging bad things that happen, or bad moods, or that sometimes people just make you angry and it's okay to feel emotions other than happiness. (this is a result of prolonged parental narcissistic abuse - and actually a big reason why his wife left him-because he would never own up to anything he did that might be seen as wrong or toxic.) because his mother was the one who instilled that absurd belief that you are ONLY allowed to show happiness. You're NEVER supposed to be disappointed in someone, especially her. Autonomy was against the rules. When I hear this song I don't hear catchy lyrics and an upbeat tune. It's cathartic that the person in the song finally accepts responsibility for his part in a failed relationship and that he has been lying to himself all along about being happy. That's how you get better and learn from your mistakes.
Duncan paved the way for John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Howie Day
VERY TRUE!!!

Such a sweet, humble guy. I've met him 5 times and he's always so genuine.
Jealous.

Still perfection over 20 years later.

Yes, Duncan, you indeed are a really good singer. ❤
One of the most cordial, genuine people you will ever meet. And this is, hands down, one of his top songs

Let's see if Casimero can still get it done at the age of 35 and after all the setbacks he had in the last couple of years...
I've got a huge crush on him back in the day.
great tune
