  • Actor Troy Kotsur and the heartfelt movie CODA were featured on CBS Saturday Morning. Enjoy the entire segment, fully captioned. Interviews were filmed at the Fountain Theatre.
For 30 years, The Fountain Theatre has been committed to creating, developing, and producing new plays with Deaf artists. We love what the CODA team has accomplished.

Finally a movie that shows people who are deaf are no different than the hearing world, we just communicate with a different language.

This was a great movie, Apple TV did a great thing for the Blind community and added audio description which means they describe what’s going on when there’s no talking and believe me, there’s no way as a blind person that I could get through this movie without sound kind of description. And I am somewhat familiar with sign language I’ve interacted with a few deaf people. Great movie.

As a mom of a young adult with autism, I could feel Ruby’s struggle. I see it in my other son who feels responsible for providing coverage. It was nice to see a movie of this portrayed out of love. This is many peoples reality. Seeing the dynamics of families with disabilities in a movie helps to normalize it.

This movie is very similar to the French movie called, “La Famille Belier “ created a few years ago. The main character wins a music scholarship to Paris instead of in the the US. The family owns a farm and there is a deaf brother, as well. I am wondering if the writer had seen the French version. Louane is the singer in the French movie. You can see it in French with English subtitles. There’s a trailer on UA-cam.

One of my most thrilling experiences in theatre came when we did A Midsummer Night's Dream with deaf actors. They shadowed us and signed while we spoke. The audiences were great, and the effect of having the audience react in waves, first from t rehearing and then the laughter from the deaf audience members and it was beautiful. Working together with the deaf actors was beautiful. Their enthusiasm and their love of performing were brilliant. The last week of the show we did without them and we all felt let down by not having our 'buddies' with us, the stage felt empty.

If you read the comments, it's full of people saying, "we're disabled, but we're healthy, whole, capable people who want to be counted as 'normal'," and, imo, that's what _CODA_ does. It normalizes disability.
If you look around you, the world is full of people who have daily challenges who fail to recognize other people with challenges because it's not part of their own lived experience. I have a fatigue disorder, and I am fully capable of thinking, "at least I'm not deaf!" even though everyone in this cast is far more capable of far more things than I am (I hope I _don't_ do that, but...)
We need to demystify "difference." You'd think we would have by now.

@Icy Rock not the same as having actors who don't know the language memorize lines. It's hard to act in a language you don't know, and native speakers can immediately tell that its not good. Even non-native speakers can tell sometimes (see: nearly every non-English line in a Marvel movie before Shang-Chi).

If you were making a movie in french would you want an actor who spoke french fluently, or a german who promised he would memorise the words phonetically? Of course it's possible to act something, but to learn a whole new language well enough to pretend it's your first language takes a long time and is hard to do convincingly. And there are so many little details of e.g. being Deaf that most people wouldn't even know they should try to do. It's possible but a lot harder and you'd need to have some Deaf people on the staff to teach the actor about things they didn't think of. Plus intensive language courses for months to get at least fluent (like the actor who played the daughter actually did), even if it would probably still be obvious to people who knew the language that you learned it as an adult. There is a lot to be gained by having an actor who is already Deaf and can focus their acting on the actual story.

Parts of the interview with the writer/director just don't ring true. She makes it appear that, right from the start, she wanted to cast deaf actors to play the deaf parts. But Marlee Matlin herself, on CBS Sunday Morning, says that hearing actors were originally considered to play the dad and the son. Also, watching even just the trailer of the French original (available on UA-cam) will show just how much CODA copied from it. Even the scene in which the dad asked her daughter to sing the song she had just sung at the concert while he held his hand against her neck and chest to feel the vibration of her voice-a wholly original and touching moment-was copied from La famille Bélier. Don't get me wrong; I thought CODA is a great movie. Emilia Jones' vocal and sign language interpretation of Both Sides Now was really moving. But perhaps the writer/director is taking credit for more than she ought to.
