honestly i wouldn't care if they had a small section for funko, kpop, or fandom stuff if they still kept their original aesthetic and continued to cater to the emo/gothic style
as an 18 year old, it’s sad to see. i was always way to shy to wear what i wanted. i never wanted people coming up to me asking me about band tees or anything so i never wore them. now that i’m coming out of my shell a little bit everything i wanted to be is just gone.
i definitely saw the biggest change in hot topic around 2011 when they clearanced All of their cds and started sizing down the T-shirt section bit by bit 😔 miss the Invader zim hoodies
right! it was still in tact that year for my local hot topic. I didn't return until around 2017/2018 and i was surprised to see that the band tee section was just all the way at the back and so limited compared to the rest. sad day indeed. there wasn't even any screams going on in the music that was playing. that was the biggest sign to me ):
Hot topic won’t go back to “the old hot topic” because punk, goth, scene, and emo fashion isn’t as popular as it was back then. They change based on what’s popular or trending. So their stores will change once the kpop nerd thing dies down lol who knows what’s next. Future former Kpop kids 10-15 years later from now will be making videos about how they miss their “old hot topic” 😂😭
@@zimmylolz7702yes. What I mean is that the reason why Hot Topic isn’t the same as it was like 15 years ago is because they’re evolving with the trends for MONEY. I understand people’s points, but they’re acting like as if Hot Topic became a clone of Aeropostale or Hollister, when in reality it just became more of a pop culture store that still has its punk/emo roots. But if they want a store that caters to specifically scene and emo kids, they can make their own store. Like start off of an Etsy site and then go from there. It’s kinda like how goths have all of their own stores.
Hot topic at rivertown mall michigan, is still pretty alternative, it still has some pop culture stuff, but they realized how many emos/scene kids/goths/punk etc. Still shop there so they brought all the stuff back!
me seeing michigan and wondering how close it is bc that's my state to find out it's 8 hours away- if i ever am in the grand rapids area though,, will definitely check it out
I dont mind the anime stuff it's always been there but the kpop, disney anything non dark related gotta go. They're pretty much catering to the e kids and the "other" audience. The same people who called goths and emos a freak back in the day. Yeah them. And for God's sake they were playing wap on the speaker inside the store cringe. I can't find anything emo related anymore.
I have no problem with them branching out into things that aren't “alternative”, but the fact that they *removed* most of their “alternative” stuff is the thing that bugs me.
HT follows the hottest trends of the years. That's why goth, scene, and punk is no more, or well, not as prominent as it was. I just recently stepped foot in a HT and I did see punk/goth-inspired clothing but not much. I believe scene, goth, and punk will come back to HT. I remember the early 2000's when Tripp pants and trench coats adorned the walls. Displays of SLG comics and books by Voltaire, and Joseph Vargo. I would pick up change I would find around town and used it to fund my comic collections (most cost $2.95@HT). One day I walked in and NONE of that awesome stuff existed anymore. It makes sense trends change, and stores have to keep up with it. I miss the 2000's goth :( with my art I still try my best to keep it going. Goth, scene, and punk is not dead it's more underground nowadays.
I only "discovered" Hot Topic in 2019-2020 at around 27 years of age I don't live in the USA and I couldn't possibly have access to it when I was 16 since Shopping online in my country wasn't as cheap and as accessible as it is today So right now I'm reliving my teenage years! I can buy all the band shirts and fandom merch that I want from Hot Topic right to my door in Israel What a wonderful time to be alive! Shame I'm not a teenager anymore, eh? 😂
I'm 18, and i remember getting scared at hot topic back when they had living dead dolls at the back, my sisters would always tease me to get inside and i would hide behind my moms back at 7 or 6 😂, nowadays i still vist hot topic, i just miss the spooky vibes it gave me when i walked in during the 2000s (like 0:27). It just feels a bit...bland now imo
I remember going to universal city walk in Hollywood and back then the hot topic had gargoyles on top with real fire coming from behind them with the old logo and everything then around 2011 I went for universal horror nights and then saw the change and was completely saddened.. and even my dad who worked at Barneys New York met I believe someone who was up there in hot topic and asked her what happened to all the band shirts and change and she said to keep up with the latest trends and market.... but now I noticed they started bringing back the older variety of band shirts like they used to probably since vintage style band shirts are the trend.

I got one from there(or the vans store) probably in 2016 >< sadly it got too small so it sucks that they aren’t sold there anymore ;;
There should be some at ur local spencers! Thats where i got mine from
I get mine of ebay or amazon I'm from England so we don't even have hot topic here
my sister gave me one from there she saved and i can’t wear it cause to big
I bought one from there in like 2018
As a 14-y.o., I really want emo-gothic-scene-punk culture to return so bad.
as a 13-y.o, I agree
17 year old goth here, we definitely need to go back. There's barely any alt clubs or specialty stores anymore, it's saddening
I'm actually a metalhead but I'd love to see the other subcultures (emo, goth, punk, scene) come back as much as I want metal to come back
