Couldn't agree more. JLR have been very slow on the electric transition after the iPace. Why is that? It's rather sad that a company known for innovation with cars like the E-Type has lacked innovation in this area. Sounds like the board at JLR just don't believe that electric cars will last or that there's something better around the corner. Very few people liked the old Defender which is why it sold poorly around the world. That is a fact. The new one is a brilliant allrounder. No contest.
I kind of expect to get help for a nice guy in a defender when my car is stuck. No problem mate, I will just hook up this winch...... Oh, the new defender didn't even come with a winch, and it has almost normal road tires so it will not get the grip needed to pull out any stuck car. Yes, the new one is much nicer to drive long distances, because it is an SUV as a base. But when you really need the qualities of a defender in the wilderness I am not convinced that it will do the job.

He also claimed it had no traction control system, which it did as it was the 2014 model, it was the TCS system that caused it to bog down and lose while Mat lied his face off.

Now where will I find a place to charge over landing? Rather stick to the diesel power defender, the electric one looks great...but practicality wise I’d give it to the diesel powered one
A full electric new Defender is only a matter of time. Just where to squeeze in all the batteries it's going to need. The other issue is whether they do it the quick and easy way, which is to just attach an electric motor to the existing power train (although dropping the gearbox of course), or the optimal way which would be to power the wheels, or at least the axles separately. If it was done wheel-by-wheel, then it wouldn't need differentials and the traction control potential would be amazing. Smaller motors for each wheel of course, but at electric power produces maximum torque at 0 RPM that might not be an issue. The traction control would be almost entirely new of course; it would be less about applying brakes to transfer torque to the wheels with grip, but more about direct delivery of power. A four motor system would also require a complex cooling system as well. The packaging of the batteries and motors would be the difficult part.
Off-road EV's should be equipped with roof mount solar panels, so that even if you run out of power during off-roading the car can charge again and not get you stranded.
Nice idea, the panels should provide enough charge to get to safety (or a charging station). Just have to get around the extra weight, complexity and cost
Do you realise how long it takes even a claimed 100w panel and charge module takes to top a battery off? You would need 3 large 1meter panels to top a battery off within about 5hr 🤣 the ones you see on RVs and boats barely maintain the battery when you leave the stereo on or if the bilge pump is having a wet day. Anyone who thinks solar panels can charge large batteries quickly needs to stop talking about electricity immediately. Some of the top end solar panels are just about managing half the claimed output.
@@lastaccountbannedfortalkin1449 Yeah, but it is anyways better than a stranded vehicle out of charge and hopes. Remember this would be best only in case of extreme emergency where it is a matter of life and death.
@@lastaccountbannedfortalkin1449 we weren't talking about using solar panels for charging the batteries upto 100%, it'd take over a day to charge even with the best and most efficient of panels. Just needs to provide enough charge to get to the nearest charging station.
The old defender looks great, but the new defender is a much more usable vehicle. Which also looks great. The new defender is such a base model. If it was black, with the added fenders, roof rack, wheels, ladders and so forth would compare to the old one in looks and I would actually want to drive on a daily basis. Nice job on the review.
They would most certainly sell a ton more electric defenders than the v8's. Besides the upcoming regulations, it's faster and quieter, and quite possibly more capable. They might just be trying to clear their V-8 inventory over the next 3 years.
🤣 what a 🔔 end. So how exactly do you get an EV going again in the field when out of battery? 😂 let me guess, you're so uneducated that you think solar panels? 🤣🤣😂

Stay safe matt am suprise this channel still post daily
Ehh? You still believe a flu is killing folk?
@@lastaccountbannedfortalkin1449 idk mate ask the hundred thousands that have died from it
I actually like both
Hi Matt great video as always . How is your Suzuki Jimny ownership going???
Great video just wish you talked a little bit about how much consumption was used by each vehicle
We want drag race with old electric defender❤
Now where will I find a place to charge over landing? Rather stick to the diesel power defender, the electric one looks great...but practicality wise I’d give it to the diesel powered one
Please please please take the electric defender to a drag race i want to see the 1/4 mile time
They are both beautiful in their own right
done love your videos
Next: new land rover defender vs jeep grand Cherokee pls do it
A full electric new Defender is only a matter of time.
That is genius
Maybe under them should be a small storage bit tho for the extra space
Just needs to provide enough charge to get to the nearest charging station.
the old one looks much better
Would LOVE a new all-electric Defender - I would buy one in a heart beat!!
It was a personal request.....carwow ...EPIC ...EPIC
The EV Defender lights looks like a photo glued on
The old defender looks great, but the new defender is a much more usable vehicle. Which also looks great. The new defender is such a base model. If it was black, with the added fenders, roof rack, wheels, ladders and so forth would compare to the old one in looks and I would actually want to drive on a daily basis. Nice job on the review.
These guys are DEFINITELY only for the "UPPER CLASS"!!! COMMONERS need not apply to buy.
Old electric defender is such a great vehicle dream car
They would most certainly sell a ton more electric defenders than the v8's. Besides the upcoming regulations, it's faster and quieter, and quite possibly more capable. They might just be trying to clear their V-8 inventory over the next 3 years.
🤣 what a 🔔 end. So how exactly do you get an EV going again in the field when out of battery? 😂 let me guess, you're so uneducated that you think solar panels? 🤣🤣😂
