  • Welcome to another episode of Tangents with Tyler and Todd! This week, things are getting real as we open up about why we made the difficult decision to move away from our property. We share our original vision for "The Land" and how our plans have evolved over time, the struggles we went through to maintain our vision, and important life lessons we learned along the way as we embrace the idea that it’s okay to shift gears from your original dream on the pursuit of happiness.

The last 4 years have been an absolutely wild ride and we both don't have a single regret...but the reality is; we just are not the same guys who were traveling around North America in an RV, or the ones who spent years living in a tent. Being able to let you into our thought process and pulling back the curtain on what life has REALLY been like these last few years was incredibly therapeutic for us. Life is just too short to not chase your dreams, even if they seem like a huge pivot or a risk..if there was anything at all that we didn't answer, don't hesitate to let us know in the comment section down below. Looking forward to chatting with you all! ❤

May I suggest, if you are feeling old at your age, you will spend most of your life worrying about that. I’m 76, and age better not be an issue. In your 30’s, comparatively, you’re still in your teens. Your 40’s, it seems to me, is when you finally start, to become, an adult. All my kids are in their 50’s and they said the same thing. RELAX!! You are doing GREAT!! What you are doing, is super fun to watch, and, the only people who get in a tizzy, are not people like you. They are NOT adventurers, NOT risk takers, and NOT interesting!!
By the way, they don’t have a successful content industry, which you have, in SPADES! And…THANK YOU, for that!❤️❤️

Most people would have said f@#$ this bs and move on. Not you, you and Tyler continued to push thru all the mishaps and others wrong doings. You never quit and your decision to move to the cottage is not a sign of giving up its a sign of moving forward! It's the entrance to another adventure. Those walls will hold for you and Tyler so many great memories just wait. I have always loved and admired your grit and ability to keep going but I am happy you guys stopped to smell the roses and realized they were 25 minutes away. Even tho times were hard on the land you're able to talk about it with smiles and laughter so how's that bad? Ya'll need to give each other big tight hugs and remind yourselves how successful you've been. As dumb as it may sound I am proud of you two for doing you.

The one thing I have learned in my 78 years on this planet is that the steps in our lives lead us to where we were meant ti be. So don't be discouraged ,it will all work out in the end .you are going on this trip that we call life and just enjoy and treasure the good stuff and treasure the bad stuff too because that teaches us not to go in that direction and puts us back where we are spposed to be going. You are in a great position to have your cake 🎂 and eat it too 👍👍. And what a wonderful road indeed ! Y’all will smash it - you’ll be fantastic dads . You’re grounded, motivated and have so much love to give a child: plus with grandparents to support you…… awwww 🥰 you got this ! As we grow, we get a little wiser. I don’t think you failed. I think you learned a lot, not just in physical skills but in perspective. Here an opportunity presented itself. One not available 4 years ago. Same dream, just years ahead of where you are now. You can do many things, summer on the land, continue the build out. Retire to it eventually. Sell off the dome, sheds, storage and keep the land and it’s infrastructure as an investment. Sell the land outright, kit & caboodle (there are many people who would love to live that journey, use the funds to combine the two dreams. You can add off grid solar, (with grid backup, (which is what we did) add your own well, etc. to this land, with a warm child friendly home. Nearer I assume to your families, schools and other children. Room to grow other projects. For now, winterize the land, (to keep your options open) move your must haves (including Christmas), be warm, cozy and have a think on it. The land will still be there.

My two cents: If you receive negative feedback from (likely a very small percentage of viewers) - see it as any other relationship that has run its course. If no longer on the same page - they can go look for other channels for off grid content - and new viewers will find you for 'cabin by the lake'. The rest of us will be here - please know how much we appreciate your authenticity and taking us on the ride with you. 💕🥰

I took away something I did not expect from this.
You very articulately described the fears that have held me back from embarking on my own UA-cam journey, here on our 16 acres of Muskoka heaven. What if my “life” gets in the way of delivering content, week after week? What if I burn out or decide to pivot? Shit gets crazy around here on a regular basis and I know I’m only human.
I dipped my toe into UA-cam, maybe 10 years ago, and it went reasonably well. But I couldn’t commit.
And yet, here I am, watching the two of you pivot and I ask myself, “am I any less interested in tuning in to Tyler and Todd twice a week? Not at all! Huh? Why is that? Because I’m over here soaking up everything the two of you choose to share because of YOU. Not the subject matter, but I’m interested in you two and what you’re up to. I’m attracted to your authenticity, your relatability, your dynamic and who you are.
So, my unexpected takeaway is this. People may find you because they’re looking for information, but they STAY with you because of who you are. You have nothing to worry about guys. Everything you’ve done over the past several years has served a purpose. When that pernicious thought bubbles up, and you wonder if you let something important pass you by, simply wave that thought away and say, with confidence, “I’m going to look back, cherish these moments, and say, I wouldn’t have changed a thing.”

Guys, you two have been through hell. Do you realize how many people would have bailed long before now? Regardless whether you keep the land and finish the container house or sell and cut your losses that choice is yours alone. We watch because you two have this incredible relationship! You teach others just by being together and being yourselves what a healthy relationship is supposed to be. You shared that there may be a child in your future, that in itself is a whole new adventure and I believe you two will make incredible parents. I feel privileged to be allowed to follow along and get a peek into your lives. Thanks for the honesty and thanks for this additional podcast. Whatever you do going forward is going to be exciting!

Too true...desperation, stress, anxiety - there goes rationality! I am just recovering from a nervous breakdown (freeze syndrome) where overload and overwhelm got the best of me. I had just bought a house...lost my job...felt pressure from every side. Four months later and I am now regaining my composure and clarity of purpose. Getting back on track with my own dream is now happeneing; and I pray that I am not too late! Let's all remember to recharge our spirits, minds and bodies on a regular basis, for only then will we have the energy reserves to go forward. You can't start/drive a car with a dead battery!

Hey Tyler and Todd!! I thoroughly enjoy watching your journey and sometimes in life our paths change and it takes us in a completely different direction than where we thought we were headed and that's totally ok. It's like being on a job you may have liked in the beginning but, over time you realize that even going into the office is consuming you and it's more of a chore, it just changes your mood and you find yourself dreading it which, is a sure sign that it's time to go! So, I look forward to seeing this new journey and I can't wait to see the changes that you make to your new home. It's already beautiful and the view of the lake is breathtaking. So I know it will be spectacular when you're done.

You know, I only started watching you guys this year while you had already been in the throes of building the shipping container for years, and I often wondered “are they really happy?” Don’t get me wrong, I can see a natural joy in both of you and you have amazing personalities that are very go-with-the-flow.. but I was EXHAUSTED watching you guys shovel snow off the solar panels, while helping the contractors and cooking for them (!) and then living in a geodesic dome! Having camped in the early spring in my home of CALIFORNIA I truly wondered where you guys got the grit to live and work daily in that kind of climate all while FILMING. I gave you guys SO MANY props and even considered I must just be a p*ssy for thinking I could never. But hearing this makes it all make sense. You guys STRUGGLED like I thought any normal human would under those conditions. You are actually really human lol and not little cute robots. I guess it’s nice to hear the real of it.
I have been in a similar position since 2019, constantly telling myself “it’s ok!” through my failures just so I could keep myself motivated to achieve my dream. And I recently GAVE UP TOO. It was unnecessary suffering I was putting myself through and it just wasn’t fair to me.
I guess what I’m saying is SAME GIRL, SAME.
I wish you both the best with the new cabin. I know you’re going to enjoy the break and eventually making that place all you.
Just please, rest a bit first. (I’m also taking this advice.)
Soooo much love to you both 😘

I was beginning to think you two were superhuman, the way you negotiate on-going series of obstacles. Optimism has its limits. Its important to not have distractions in your bedroom, such as TVs, the Office desk, a kitchen, a stove needing to be constantly fed, Bedroom is just a place to go and sleep, it makes your brain and body shut down when you walk in because it knows even if you dont. your new place will be great and restful. THANK YOU for this conversation. I’m currently living off grid in almost the exact same situation as your early years (rv, no hookups, bucket toilet, 600w solar generator, using a cooler as a fridge, etc). I’m trans & disabled & I’m currently only making ~10-12k per year, so sometimes it’s frustrating to watch you guys putting in all this infrastructure that is clearly a relatively large investment. It’s easy for my brain to get caught up in the whole “living off grid must be so much easier when you have that kind of money” mindset but I need to constantly remind myself that we’re all on our own journeys. I especially liked the part about pivoting & changing your mind too, because I originally moved out here with the intention of building a tiny house to live in, then I was considering a school bus (my dream for literally as long as I can remember), and now I’m back to the tiny house idea, except designing it as an airbnb instead, and then I’ll convert my 94 suburban to a little off-roading / overlanding rig to live out of part time so I can travel around and live in intentional communities when I need more human interaction. Anyway, all of this is to say thank you for not wrapping it all up in a neat little bow & instead embracing the mystery & nuance & ambiguity of life. Follow your hearts & you can’t go wrong ✨

There are no failures and Tyler is correct in the value of not ‘planning’, and just simply ‘being’ for a spell. Quieting the mind is the most important skill to master. I challenge you to do what Charlie has to do this winter: simply stop, rest, clear expectations, and remain trusting, comfortable and loving while not ‘knowing’. Hey guys, wow - this was a lot to digest, but I'm glad you let us know your struggles. I felt especially bad that your viewers were giving you a hard time for buying the cottage. I think part of it was that throughout these past few years, you never let on the depth of the struggles of living on the land. I also think that we were all so wrapped up in your projects and what was coming next, we never took into account what it was like on a day to day basis to do basic human functions like going to the bathroom and taking a shower. Honestly, I'm surprised you lasted this long. It shows your true passion and commitment to The Land. I'm so happy for both of you that you decided to take this step back and hopefully enjoy life more than always working on a project. I just can't tell you how much I love the two of you. You are premiere story tellers. You are so honest and interesting and caring. Anyways of course, when Todd got emotional I started to cry (as usual). You are so right, things have been terribly hard and quite honestly, I don't think your followers realize just how hard it has been. Most of these ppl come from temperate climates. I bet if you had any followers from the Scandanavian countries they would not be giving you such a hard time. Canadian winters are hard af, if you don't come from here, you don't get it. I am thrilled you have a new home. I am so excited to see where all this is going to take you. I am along for the journey. Also if you are interested, I would love to hear the shipping container story, not only because the two of you will slay that conversation but also because I think ppl need to realize what you have been through and also the drawbacks of these types of homes in this climate. Sorry about the long comment but I also agree about the children thing. If you are going to have them, you don't want to put that on hold indefinitely. I am also reminded of Simply Living Alaska channel, they moved to a better place for their old dogs to live out their senior years in comfort, I really admire them for it.
