Did you hear the Chief engineers non-answer? It sure sounds like they are planning to make an EV... If they can build a 2023 Maverick EV with 200mi of range, it will sell like crazy.
@ Philip Biron. Only if they have batteries to put in them. Per Ford they are production constrained to ~50k MachE due to battery availability. They are counting on SK Innovations to build their factory outside Atlanta GA. The total capacity being built is only for a few 100k vehicles and that factory is also suppling cells for VW’s ID4 production in Tennessee. The made an announcement of a new investment with SK but that 60 GWh is not scheduled to begin production until “mid-decade” With the MachE, F150 Lightening, Lincoln & Ford mid-size crossovers (CDC746/747) all in production by 2023 there won’t be enough batteries to go around. If they can easily sell everything they make they will focus on higher margin vehicles. A well equipped F150 Lightning (~$60k) will have much larger margins than a $30-35k BEV Maverick. Don’t get me wrong I want one. I just understand the time table of global battery ramp so won’t expect to see a BEV Maverick before 2025.
Thinking about how to make the bed more useful is great! I've drilled holes in beds to install tie downs that should have been provided and cobbled racks together. Ford has thought about how to make this stuff easy. Two position tailgate - wonderful! "Back then" tailgates used to be supported by chains rather than wire cables. When hauling stuff we'd unhook and twist the chain in order to make it shorter and hold the tailgate in a 'half down' position. Ford reinvented what we did. Great utility and seems to solve the problem of holding sheet goods in an undersized bed (sedan with no trunk lid).
Yeah.. but it’s begging for a battery plug in.. even if it’s a hybrid plug in with just 50 electric miles.. it’s just 100% necessary.. i know the price will probably kick up to $25k then.. but it’s just necessary. And the money saved on gas in a few years makes up the difference! Not having a plug these days is just a major drawback. If nothing else, for future resale! Everything is going to have a plug in 5 years.. resale counts.. this is not future proofed at all. 40mpg is pure shit in 5 years.. but i get it.. the price point is huge.. and it’s decently designed for uses.. but really wish it was plug in capable

Ford, you better get cracking on a BEV Maverick before Tesla comes out with a mini Cybertruck and steals your lunch again. I've already decided that my next vehicle would be an EV and a BEV Maverick would have been the ideal replacement for my 2010 Ford Escape. The new Escapes are basically cars not SUVs.
Sign me up! In the 90's, I asked Chevy if I could buy an electric S-10, but "they are fleet only" they said. "We will take them back in three years and crush them" was unsaid.
@@kenchow8213 Tesla always announce things 2 years in advance, and the full Cybertruck isn't here yet, so I don't think there will be a mini one for quite a while. It's a pity it's not a BEV or even a PHEV, but there's still a lot of people wary of electric cars and still a lot of people buying gas guzzling trucks (Ford sold 790,000 F150s last year compared to Tesla's 490,000 total worldwide sales) so Ford are probably correct in taking baby steps at both ends of their range. With battery costs still around $100/kWh I don't think anybody could profitably make a $20k BEV that doesn't suffer from severe range anxiety at the moment.
@@Error6503 I sure one of the reason Ford isn't making a BEV Maverick is because they don't have the batteries. I won't expect it to cost $20k, but I would be willing to pay $30k for a BEV Maverick, more if it was 4WD.
@@kenchow8213 That's one thing I foresee most other companies, including Ford, falling flat in the short-term. Battery demand will skyrocket once things like the F150 Lightning starts production. Way to go Ford - the transition truck for folks who didn't know they NEEDED a truck but just wanted to go greener. Keep it up Blue Oval, we're pulling for you. And thanks Sandy, for sharing.
Look at the interaction of old (sorry Sandy :) ) & new. Mutual respect, BOTH listening to eachother & both learning from eachother. Truly was "an honour", but for BOTH guys. I love that!!
Looks awesome except for the short bed. A camper shell & a pass-through door from the bed to the rear seat area would enable secure storage of surf boards, etc.
This truck is going to be a top 10 selling vehicle in the US without a doubt. I was nervous for them when they got rid of the sedans, but if this is what the future holds for them, well, lets just say I think they know what they are doing.
Firstly, I really think Sandy is awesome! I highly recommended to anyone interested in progressive car tech. When I first heard about the Maverick, I thought, "Great! a low cost hybrid truck." And then I realized that if we don't make plug in hybrids the minimal, then we're just kicking the can down the road; A plug in would have been perfect. Taking a closer look...the stronger engine of the Maverick aren't even hybrids anymore =(
They need to focus on investing more on expanding battery production. They are going to have a bunch of popular vehicles that are all production constrained due to batteries. Just like what is happening now with the MachE. The new announcement with SK Innovation of 60 GWh by “mid-decade” is too little too late.
Thank YOU 🙏 AGAIN Sandy for your excellent work 👍👏👏👏👏👏 You had a Ford Engineer talk design and customer experience like we never get in any tv commercial 👍
As a long time Ford investor I'm thrilled to see the direction the company is taking. Sure, this isn't an EV, but it isn't $30,000 either. This is ideal for their target market. Ford will sell as many as they can build.
I'm really excited about this truck. The interior dimensions are the same or a little larger than my current Explorer which works great for me and I would love a truck bed to go along with it! Also love that it's a hybrid!
I’ve driven a Fusion Hybrid since 2016, when it was new, and I am sure this Maverick will beat the epa rating of 40 mpg. My Fusion beats its epa rating easily.
Small trucks definitely have their place, even for those beyond starter trucks. I would like to see a longer bed with a lower deck personally but I understand why this is built this way.
This is nice and all, but vans are far more practical, and I'd appreciate it a lot more if they offered a $20k plug-in hybrid van that focused on doers, rather than families.
🔴🔴🔴🔴 I love the way that Ford is thinking. They are really doing their homework. What a great company! Thanks Sandy for bringing this to us. Under $20G ... you can't go wrong.
I think this is more likely than a BEV version. I could see them sticking with BEV or ICE only for the F150. Then have the Maverick get the choice of ICE, HEV & PHEV. They also need to add more torque to the PHEV version. The current hybrid Maverick can’t be upgraded to the 4000 lbs. And 2000 lbs towing just isn’t enough.
Problem with a plugin hybrid version: It'll probably get ~2 miles to the kwh with that profile, and a kwh costs ~13¢, call it 6.5¢/mile. It gets 40mpg, and at $2.60 a gallon that's 6.5¢ per mile. If it costs the same to run on electricity as the motor, why bother? Chevy saw this with the volt that a number of people just never plugged it in. I suspect they could do a PHEV real quick, (of they haven't done it already) but by but doing it this way they save battery manufacturing capacity for other vehicles, they keep the price down, and they have a shiny new PHEV drive train to sell you in a few years. All that said, I'll probably wait for the PHEV version myself.
One thing Ford and other Auto manufacturers miss is publically soliciting customer input during the design process. This encourages customer engagement and provides a sense of ownership in the final product.
The secondary hood latch is annoying but it is a safety feature to prevent the hood from flying up into the windscreen driving down the highway when you’re texting and accidentally pull the hood release inside the car.
I love my civic but I need a truck now that I live in the northeast. This truck is EXACTLY what I've been looking for and at just the right time. CANT WAIT!!!!
As with any new vehicle, things almost always look good and/or promising but until they are 'in the wild' for a period of time it is impossible to tell if they will have the reliability/dependability needed to make them worth buying.
Finally, a Chief engineer who beliefs in the cardboard approach. But what i'm still missing is some space for the drive-in food. ESPECIAL in the American truck.
Can’t help but wonder is this too little too late. I had always been a Ford guy, Taurus, Mustang 5.0, Explorer then the new “redesigned” F150. That truck was the last straw. Quality issues from in your face obvious paint flaws, leaking sunroof, etc etc. Then the piss poor dealership experience. I really hope they do ok, thousands of jobs depend on it. Thanks Sandy and Munro team for another excellent post and for the share !!!!!!

I own a 2000 2 wheel drive Ranger I put new heads on it because I like the form factor. It has rust that needs fixing but nothing that can't be fixed. I own a Prius car. They took the two and put them together! Then the 3d printer community will make this the options endless with the support of DIY . The all electric version or plugin version must be in the plans in a few years. This will be popular but if they do a plugin and all electric they will have a market killer.
I love this. Ford starts a car design with carpentry and arts and crafts. It’s cool to see the back end stuff that’s hidden instead of just the finished product.
Great content! Only thing I'm a little worried about is all the DIY and removable things. I get they want to keep the price down but I'm worried this will turn into a trend where you get a very stripped down car, no cupholders, matts, half an armrest
I am very happy to see this kind of engineering & solution 1st design coming back. What do the customers want and do with their vehicle? Let's make that happen. What a concept! How much does it cost us to make that? Essentially just the up front cost of designing it. Now to keep the bean counter MBA's out of it and screwing it up.
Always Always Always wanted a small pick up again that had amazing fuel economy. My first vehicle for high school my parents pasted down to me was a 2001 ford ranger with over 200,000k. After giving it up due to problems i stuck to sedans because lets be honest i was probably getting 13 miles a gallon on that ranger lol. The newly remolded ranger was nice but went too large for me and the mpg just wasn’t there for me. So happy i wanted longer before getting one because this!! Is my type of truck!! Height, length, and Mpg is perfect! I never wanted a full size truck or needed one with all that horse power and torque. Now lets just wait for those live road test and ratings to come out! Hopefully its a 5 star little pickup⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cool Truck! I am excited for Ford to come up with a bridge truck. Hybrids fix a lot of the problems with gas vehicles. It uses existing fueling infrastructure. It gets good fuel economy. It eliminates brake wear until after 100K miles. The engine should last hundreds of thousands of miles in the hybrid application. The simple tailgate cable solution is innovative. Never saw that before. The published cad model for the cupholder attachment is nice. My first new truck was a Ford Ranger. I loved it, and it met the needs of my growing family. This Maverick would have been my first new vehicle out of college if I were starting today. My daddy did not buy me anything to drive to college. I drove old junk I saved up for from my own jobs until I could afford the new car payment out of college. I guess it builds character, but it was definitely more stressful. My Girls got hand-me-down cars, but I had to deal with repairs and maintenance until I started buying them Toyotas and hiring out the repairs. Not having to worry about vehicle reliability while going to college is essential. For a parent, Its nice to not have to worry about your child's vehicle breaking down. Affordability is hugely important. Front wheel drive makes sense. It should be better on winter roads than the rear wheel drive. Not sure why other trucks are not front wheel drive. Like everything else on the truck, I hope the battery is reliable. I have Toyota hybrids. The NiMH batteries last 140K before you have to replace them. Because Toyota makes so many of these cars, the aftermarket or reman batteries are very common. I hope Ford sells enough of these trucks to sustain the aftermarket/reman/used battery industry. They need to make the aftermarket price of the drive battery affordable to allay fears that the battery reliability will be a problem. Otherwise people will avoid the truck for fear that resale will be a problem. Toyota learned that lesson and offers new replacement drive batteries for about $2500. Originally these batteries were $5000. Another nice thing is that my local dealer did not charge me to diagnose the battery failure when one occurred on an older prius. This truck competes directly with the Toyota Prius hybrid for young adults. Its no joke! The prius has a ton of cargo capability if you put the back seats down. Over all, great job on this truck Ford!!!
Saw my first one of these yesterday parked in a "High Efficiency Vehicles Only" space at the market. It always annoys me to see gas guzzlers parked in these spaces. I looked up the MPG on my phone and BAM! 40mpg! Nice surprise.

My 3 has been trouble free. Also my 2001 Jeep Cherokee ( last year in a 18 year run). Has been completely reliable and is still my daily driver with over 320,000 miles no major problems.

I really hope they make a electric one.
Jim Fields Ford CEO did not say yes but also did not say no. Though he did seem more direct that the Bronco was going to have an electric option.
Did you hear the Chief engineers non-answer? It sure sounds like they are planning to make an EV... If they can build a 2023 Maverick EV with 200mi of range, it will sell like crazy.
@@kschleic9053 without question they will easily sell a quarter million the first year.
@@kschleic9053 Yeah that sounded to me like "We are but I'm not allowed to announce that"
@ Philip Biron. The made an announcement of a new investment with SK but that 60 GWh is not scheduled to begin production until “mid-decade”
With the MachE, F150 Lightening, Lincoln & Ford mid-size crossovers (CDC746/747) all in production by 2023 there won’t be enough batteries to go around.
Sandy out here trying to get us answers about full electric
Or even plug in hybrid…… for those that want to store some stuff underneath the back bench still.
I would never thought that I would say this but Ford has a winner on its hands.
Yeah.. but it’s begging for a battery plug in.. even if it’s a hybrid plug in with just 50 electric miles.. it’s just 100% necessary.. i know the price will probably kick up to $25k then.. but it’s just necessary.

More complaints from customers then the law allows, bad built quality, panel gaps galore, mismatch plastics used in all vehicles, doors that don't close half the time and need repair, Windows that don't roll up and work half the time, blackout infotainment screen, waiting weeks for a flatbed to pick up the car for repairs and let's concluded with the range that is over promised and under delivered.
Is that why Road and Track, Edmonds, Car and Driver, Motor Trend and several others rated the Mustang Mach e over the Tesla Model Y. Fuck off Dude!
Get with the program... Ford's not going anywhere and the Lighting is going to change the game PERIOD
As a small contractor using a euro wagon , I like this small truck. 🔨🔨🔨
Trans should be reliable since it is ecvt like a Prius (uses planetary gears and two motors).
The old Ford escape hybrid was extremely reliable as NYC taxis. Hundreds of thousands of miles
I would buy an all electric Maverick TODAY!!
Tesla is the only one who is building their own battery manufacturing plants... everyone else will be depending on LG and CATL and other third parties, and they'll be in a bidding war for capacity while Tesla can chug along using their own factories.
Once my focus is paid off I'll be all over this thing. First time I've been excited about a vehicle in a while. I'm self employed and work from my vehicle in NYC . I had to get the focus ,my old f150 was too big and not fuel efficient.
Wife and me love our Focus. P*** off Ford stoped making it. Upset. We also have a F150. The Mav is perfect. Got one on order.

Awesome video Mr Munro!! I can't believe anyone would buy a civic over this, from a logical position; less expensive, more versitile, as good or better mpg and it does all that truck stuff! $23K for the XLT. Not bad.
I ordered a Maverick. The biggest concern for me is long term reliability.
About time Ford take the needs of customers seriously. Love the creativity and original thinking. Coming up with inexpensive solutions in a creative manner is second to none. Thumbs up for Ford.
The cup holder idea is soo simple, but GREAT, that kind of thinking needs to be expanded 10 fold 🙌
Like include powered metal tabs underneath the cup holder insert, so something can be plugged in 12v that they 3d printed at home. Actually impressed with this idea of open sourcing design.
With the software they make the same aproach years ago with the developers
What an excellent review of the Maverick and it's development. Ever since first discovering this new pickup I have been extremely interested in it. After this review I feel very excited and confident in actually purchasing one. Thanks again for another great video. Much appreciated! 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Way to go Ford - the transition truck for folks who didn't know they NEEDED a truck but just wanted to go greener. Keep it up Blue Oval, we're pulling for you. And thanks Sandy, for sharing.

I loved the Maverick, my wife already ordered one for her.
Sun visor mirror, check. Dual cup holder, check. I think we go ourselves a great truck here.
I'm concerned that camper shells are not very secure. Is there a camper shell with factory automotive grade security?
Nice to see how creative Ford’s team is.... impressive! Thank you Sandy.

That Mazur guy is good. Ford is poised to leapfrog a few vehicle makers if they continue to head electric.
Yeah I’m shocked in the progress they’ve made. 18 months ago I woulda put Ford at the back of the pack. Now? They’re top 3 with VW and Tesla
@@Mathis218337 Yes. They really slimmed down by dropping out of the small car market. They now realize (I think) what they must focus on. 🌩 💡
They need to focus on investing more on expanding battery production. They are going to have a bunch of popular vehicles that are all production constrained due to batteries. Just like what is happening now with the MachE.
The new announcement with SK Innovation of 60 GWh by “mid-decade” is too little too late.
Ford definitely made the right choice by selecting the 4 cylinder engine with the hybrid!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great choice Ford!!!

This is gold! Fantastic review of the vehicle. Loved seeing the market research that went into designing the bed! Thanks Sandy.
I tried reserving one was told by ford dealership they will have a 5k mark-up. Buying a toyota this weekend.
I can't wait to see this thing in person 😍
As a long time Ford investor I'm thrilled to see the direction the company is taking. Sure, this isn't an EV, but it isn't $30,000 either. This is ideal for their target market. Ford will sell as many as they can build.
I'm really excited about this truck. The interior dimensions are the same or a little larger than my current Explorer which works great for me and I would love a truck bed to go along with it! Also love that it's a hybrid!
I especially like the bed versatility. The simple, two-position tailgate for sheet stock is very clever.
I agree, but it's a different market for the Maverick.
Snipes Aside... GREAT STUFF.... Please a Part II with the Yellow Bronco!
🔴🔴🔴🔴 I love the way that Ford is thinking. They are really doing their homework. What a great company! Thanks Sandy for bringing this to us. Under $20G ... you can't go wrong.
Make it a plug-in hybrid with ~40 miles ev range and I’m sold
I think this is more likely than a BEV version. I could see them sticking with BEV or ICE only for the F150. Then have the Maverick get the choice of ICE, HEV & PHEV.
They also need to add more torque to the PHEV version. The current hybrid Maverick can’t be upgraded to the 4000 lbs. And 2000 lbs towing just isn’t enough.
Problem with a plugin hybrid version:
It'll probably get ~2 miles to the kwh with that profile, and a kwh costs ~13¢, call it 6.5¢/mile.
The 3D printing part is huge!! I hope they expand on this part with more options in the front. I love this
Can’t help but wonder is this too little too late.
The Civic was mentioned multiple times, but not the only other FWD pickup currently on the market, the Ridgeline.
Size, the Ridgline is bigger overall and has a price to match its size

It's great to see a small truck on the market again. Small, but bigger than my 1997 Tacoma, which is a perfect size. And a hybrid to boot. If Ford were to offer a PHEV or EV version, I'd buy one.

This will be popular but if they do a plugin and all electric they will have a market killer.
i looks nice i wonder what cost of ownership will be
i will wait till it has at least some plug in range even like 40 miles would be a game changer

Great content! Only thing I'm a little worried about is all the DIY and removable things. I get they want to keep the price down but I'm worried this will turn into a trend where you get a very stripped down car, no cupholders, matts, half an armrest

Love it. I'm driving a 2004 Tundra and think this may be my next truck.
How can we Android Auto and Apple Platforms work in same vehicle, sounds secure. Got ASIL's?
