I think onions and garlic feel special, because it is a harvest that can last a whole year. There is a sense of empowerment growing what is the base of so many daily meals and you can store and survey your stored harvest at any time. 😊

I promised my granddaughter I would wait until I see her next week to plant garlic. We are both excited to grow it for the first time!
Yep same here. I have been collecting garlic from local people to separate and plant. I also love using garlic in everything. My granddaughter loves helping me plant garlic. I was late last year I did it in January but I did get some. I was so happy and it was yummy.
Such a great feeling growing and tending to the garden, harvesting and cooking with things that you grew yourself… makes the meal, or smoke😉 so much better!!
Now I know why my garlic was so pitiful last year. Because I did the refrigerator thing also.

Yes, pretty much all garlic will sprout.
I grew supermarket garlic last year without a problem. The organic is better for sure.

Canada🇨🇦 I planted local grown store bought garlic 🧄, green and yellow onions 🧅, potatoes 🥔 and mushrooms 🍄. Grows great especially the garlic 🧄 and green onions. I bought cherry and beefsteak tomato 🍅 and pepper 🫑🌶️ seeds also. I cant wait to harvest some and continue to grow more! I grow indoors during the winter and outside during warmer seasons.

I used garlic from a local farm last year. I planted all 6 hard neck cloves and all 6 came up. The last bulb did mold at 4-5 months but there is a lot of humidity in my house and it wasn’t certified seed garlic. I absolutely get a wonderful different feeling from growing my own garlic and it’s soooo easy! Well , I planted 214 cloves this year, in October. And 😂 4 varieties to share with my family 💗🙌🏻 🧄 my germination has been amazing 🤩

Loved the vid as well as the onion vid. I love growing both. I’m in MN and grow both the hard and soft neck. I watched the vid on refrigerating the garlic so I put some of mine in the frig and left some out. I planted my garlic the last week in September. I planted a 4 different varieties, 2 from a seed catalog and 2 from my previous year. I mulch the garlic for winter.
I forgot to comment on the onion vid. I either plant the sets or strands that I get from my local garden store. Most years, I get enough onions to carry me through the winter months. I have a few onion plants in the garden that reseed. I harvest these onions as soon as they get green while I’m waiting for ‘green’ onions to grow. I’ve never tried starting inside but think I will this winter. I’m going to order some of the crab and lobster this spring too. I used the harvest tomato fertilizer last summer and really like it.
I think the fact that garlic and onions are grown underground gives them a special "power" LOL 😆 😅 Just my opinion

I am such a huge onion and garlic fan so I definitely get where you are coming from Brian and strangely enough I am becoming really fond of carrot tops! You can use them instead of parsley in a lot of cooked items and I haven’t found anything they aren’t good in yet. ( I put them in my omelette for breakfast)! I put my garlic in the ground in mid October and can’t wait to see how they turn out. Next I’m going to try planting onions so I can’t wait for you to do a video on that!! You share a lot of great info. Straight to it. Planted garlic for the first time with our own compost 😁 so excited! On top, I put some rabbit poop and hay from their pen. Hoping it turns out well. They were already all sprouted basically.

There is nothing weird with that feeling, my wife and I feel the same, we also believe they ate much more flavorful❣️ Having a sence of accomplishment and pride over caring for your plants is nothing to feel weird over either, to many today have no idea how to grow their own food. I ordered my seed garlic as soon as I could find it as everyone was selling out. It arrived a few months ago and I put it in the frig to keep it from sprouting too soon. Hope I still get a good harvest. I was already planning to put it in this week so I think I'll be sure to plant more just to have enough in case the heads are small. I'm also here in SoCal (10a) but I bought some hardneck just to try; I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the informative video. Very good information. I’m in zone 10a but in a colder micro climate than your location. I’ve planted four varieties including two hard neck types ( Music and Chesnock Red) as an experiment. I grow Inchelium Red and Sicilian Artichoke (my favorite) soft neck types every season and they do really well here. I don’t know if it helps growing but I soak seed cloves over night in water with a teaspoon of 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer and 1/4 tsp baking soda per gallon of water. I learned that from a commercial grower in Gilroy, CA, again don’t know how effective it is but I’ve always done it that way. You packed a lot of good information into a short video - well done!

There's nothing wrong or weird about enjoying something straight from your own garden. Even if it's something as small or basic as garlic or tomato. It's yours, no pun intended, but the fruits of your labor. Your garden is beautiful and very inspiring. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
My garlic is up!! I planted it a few weeks ago due to where we live and I was delighted to see it had sprouted! After your video though I think one lot may not get enough sun?? It’s all a learning experience! Thanks for great video! ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️

How did you know what I’m doing today? 🤣Actually it’s a bit late, but I already have two raised beds planted with Music hardneck. What I’m planting today is some that came up volunteer in another area last Spring. Nothing to lose. I’ll be mulching heavily since we’re going to get some really cold weather her in SE TN this week. Do you harvest the garbanzos? I started buying organic dry garbanzos from the bulk section for my cover crop but have not had a harvest yet.
@@orleanaplytas4191 you really should not be growing cover crops for harvest ... In fact you should kill off the crops and incorporate into the soil just about when they start flowering. The reason is that all that nitrogen that is building up in the root nodules gets diverted to the "fruit" once they start to form. And you really want that nitrogen in the soil.
@@GreenLove1 well that makes complete sense. I did not think about the flowering process absorbing the nitrogen. You are the first to tell me this and I talked to farmers and Profesors in the field. Thanks for the information. Follow up question, how would you handle the following situation? Some areas can have year round aphids and an infestation can affect how the plant uses/produces nitrogen. Will the cover crop still produce enough nitrogen in the nodules to be effective? And a follow up to that. I know that it is important to use a variety of plants in my compost to provide a better nutrient density, is it the same in cover crops? Do some plants provide more than others? And I am understanding that it is the plant nodules on the roots that produce the nitrogen, is the whole plant turned into the soil in an effort to compost benefits? Or is there another reason?

Last year I didn’t refrigerate my garlic and bulbs never formed. This year I refrigerated them for a few months and I planted them a few weeks ago. It’s still “hot” in Florida so I hope something grows this year.
Just threw some organic garlic in my basket at target! I've tried growing garlic also from out of the refrigerator with no luck.

I'm in the UK, I bought garlic sets. They came as 2 bulbs, every single clove in the bulbs were enormous, none were small at all. I planted them the first week of October and they are coming through now, I don't mind if they are slow, I prefer that they form roots first.
I got scapes on my garlic that I bought from SD Seed Company and I'm in Zone 10a and getting ready to harvest them very soon and I see nice garlic heads under the soil.
I feel the exact same way when prepare something from my garden

I don't think you're weird at all! I think lettuce and other things we are so used to seeing especially just the green leafy plants. But a bulb of garlic seems more intricate and harder to make, I totally get it. 🤗

Love your channel! Thank you for all the great advice. I know you mentioned planting lettuce around the garlic. What do you do in spring with the warm weather crops? I assume you can’t dig and amend big holes between garlic for let’s say tomatoes in April, so what do you do with the space when it gets too warm for things like lettuce? Also, I have a container garden in San Diego (5 gal. to like a 70 gal. big smartpots “bed” ) do you recommend just devoting a container or 2 for just garlic or should I try to interplant?

It is the coolest thing ever to grow your own food and garlic is amazing--so, no, you are not alone in thinking that! I am sorry you can't grow the hard necks--the scapes are unbelievably delicious!! Like the green of a scallion, except that it tastes like garlic. (Great for pesto or even just raw.)
I by garlic from my local Farmers Market to use. It is cheaper than buying seeds. And because it is the local Farmers Market I know they have a better chance of success.
Fridge is best for pitted fruits. I could be wrong, but tulips are probably closer to tubers and if you put them in the fridge, it will extend the sleeping time
Cool! It was nice to learn about conditioning the soil. Crab and lobster shells interesting. What about egg shells? Kelp , what about old lettuce? I throw all my scraps of peelings in my garden, ( but sometimes they end up in my engine of my car! Lol!( rats). Would be cute to see your son learn how to intro your shows.

I think stratification works on the garlic that requires more chilling, like hard neck when growing in a climate that doesn't provide those same chill hours. I think the soft neck doesn't require as many chill hours.

That's a great idea for a video! I know a lot of green tops like turnips and carrots are edible, but there must be a lot more out there.
A friend of mine makes pesto from the scapes.
So here in Northern California (near Palo Alto) I just planted some hard neck garlic that a friend gave me. I'm going to pour ice over it every week this winter (once or twice). I'll let ya know how it goes!!

I’m curious how this will go. I’m also in Northern California near Sonoma, and planted hardneck garlic for the first time. I’m hopeful we’ll get enough chill hours for bulbs to form. I might try the ice water on a few of my plants.
I'm wondering if the refrigerators problem is that it also removes moisture from things. Perhaps if the moisture levels were maintained higher in their little corner of the fridge they wouldn't shrink and have less energy to recover later?
I've planted garlic all summer in strategic places. Of course the bulbs didn't flourish in the 115 Inland Empire heat.
HOWEVER. We got to eat some awesome chives up to now. PLUS... I said STRATEGICALLY. Garlic is literally my pest control. I only deal with worms and spiders thanks to garlic and MARIGOLDS. The other pests hate both!
Love your channel Oh boy, so I'm new at this. I planted my garlic at the end of June. I have pulled up two plants and there is no garlic at the end of the stems. Now that I've watched your video I see that I planted at the wrong time. So should I pull it all up? Maybe cut the tops off and put hay over it. Please help. I've babied it all summer long. I just never planted garlic, onions and leeks before. Real learning experience. and I've learned a lot from you.

I planted some hard neck garlic and I'm in the Bay Area 9b. Our coldest nights have been about 43. Will hard neck garlic not grow because it's not cold enough?
I've heard that planting potatoes about the same time as you do garlic is also successful. I was wondering if you have tried overwintering your potatoes before so they sprout early in the spring?

Ok, I really need advice. 2nd time I’ve grown garlic and both came out puny heads. Soft snd hardnecks. Planted in October and they grew really quickly..green tops. Winter came with some snow in Pine AZ (5600’ elevation, zone 7B), and in spring, they continued to grow until they appeared to be ready to harvest. So SMALL! What am I doing wrong? They require longer cold weather maybe? Plant in November or December maybe? Do they require much colder temps than 60-70’s in Oct…?

You touched on when to harvest garlic when the leaves turn yellow to brown in color. Odd question... Does this change in color also apply to elephant garlic even though it's not classified as a garlic?

Ugh didn't know about the fall planting (colder climate here) Why would they sell garlic clove seed in early spring... Still gonna try it though, even if they don't get nice bulbs, I'm planting them with potatoes so hopefully it will at least deter any pests?

Hey Brian. Do you put the clove right on top of the fertilizer you put in the hole or do you put dirt over the fertilizer than the clove?
I believe he said he mixes the fert a little with the dirt (Ha! I made a rhyme) before he sticks the clove on top.

Garlic has quite shallow roots. I can grow them in 5-inch herb planters with zero issues. When you harvest garlic, you literally just pull it out of the ground...that's how shallow the roots are.
Can I grow garlic in plant pots in green house in the UK ?

I think you only need to refrigerate hardneck varieties if you want to grow them in your area.
All garlic benefits from "vernalization" to set the bulb.....without it, even softnecks can grow small, weak bulbs.

I am in MA and planted Garlic last month. We had a snow also here in October. Now I see the sprouts shooting. Will they survive the snow or should I take any steps to cover them up? Already mulched it thick. Please advice.

Does cutting green stems for consumption interfer with growth of garlic?
Yes, it does. the only part you would cut before harvesting would be scape on the hardneck variety of garlic. You cut scape not later than after the first circle it coil, later becomes woody. You cut it to allow for a bigger bulb, but it will not go to waster - you can make a pesto from it, steam with other veggies or eat raw.
