LYRICS:
The message was sent
The task was done
Prayers offered up in the night
Faced the light of the burning sun
My brother was dead
By his own hand
A gun in the glove box
‘Cause he carried money
For the old man
They say he gambled
Friday’s payroll
Found him in his car
In a cornfield
Twenty one years old
He wanted to own
His own clothing store
Dressed like sam cooke
With the catholic girls
In his Fair lane Ford
Doing his job
Doing his best
Selling burnt orange
And avocado green kitchens
All across the midwest
The favored one
Me and my brothers all knew
My mother loved him more
Than she knew
What to do
The message was sent
The truth to tell
The officer tried to catch her
As she wept and fell
My father screamed no
And beat on the wall
Shook the foundations of the house
Shook the life out of us all
The priest came by
Undeterred
There to explain
The unexplainable
With god's word
The message was sent
A family gone
The death of a golden child
And nothing left
To carry on
The message was sent
The task was done
Prayers offered up in the night
Faced the light of the burning sun

I'm sure everyone here knows the facts surrounding the death of John's older brother. Going through that at 10 years old. No wonder he's just now able to put it into words. Knowing that and the fact that his first wife to her own life also makes this song so hard to listen to without tears streaming down my face. I'm certain I'm not the only one. John's song's have been doing this to me for decades now. Somethings broken, Learning how to love you,Angel eyes and many more. Thanks for letting us in John. That what true artists do.
Very well said. This song is just gut wrenching. At least Crossing Muddy Waters is a bit more metaphorical...
Great song wonderful lyrics and haunting music john hiatt poet of highest quality
Such pain. sung so Beautifully Love you Mr. Hiatt!
Emotionally gut wrenching
Craftsmanship....magic
unbelievable, but hey it's john hiatt, doin' what he's been doin' for ever, makin' magic..
One of the best songs of last years, one of the best lyrics too
Been following him for years, still great. One of the best.
An amazing artist, been listening to this man for years and I must say he's got a great band backing him!!!🌌
My 68th birthday was the day this album was released, thank you John, it's the best I've ever heard, what a great birthday gift.
Doesn't get much better than this. John said on NPR that this song just sorta fell out, he had never written about his brother's death before. Jerry Douglas and band do an exquisite job with their accompaniment. American treasures both.
JH is a talent that has always resonated with me. Thank you, John, for your humanity.
That sound is awesome - crispy and clear!
We have front row tickets to see John and Lyle Lovett next month!
You can't do better than that! I bet it was glorious!
ONE OF THE BEST AND PAINFUL SONG EVER WRITTEN..
just one thing to say " this is music" and i love music for sure
Thank you, I lost my brother to suicide at the age of 32, no one really understands what that means John Hiatt can put it into words, thank you, it comforts me after 23 years
No words can help, but my heart to yours.
“Explain the unexplainable with God’s word. “ I’m sure the priest meant well. Thank you, JH, for grieving with us.
One of the best songs of the cd. Love the voice but also the collaboration with Jerry Douglas. Nice solo's
Thanks for writing this one. My brother took his life this past Easter morning and I'm still trying to make sense of it. It's good to see something beautiful come from such a tragic event. This album is perhaps John's greatest work. If you haven't listened to the whole thing, do yourself a favor and take it in, just beautiful.
I’m so so sorry for your loss it’s too awful
The weird thing about this song is not only how tragic it is but sung with such truth it is still beautiful
I love this song and trying to learn it so I can teach it to my friends and we can play together one of whom lost his brother 50 years ago
Go as well as you can but grief is challenging 😢
Cried my eyes out.
You can't go wrong with such a band behind you ; Jerry Douglas , a legend.
John has aged in a good way ; now he's making finally the only honest music there is : Americana music in a good way ; when you listen to it you feel it , and that's whats this is all about.
I feel like this is his most personal song since Alone in the Dark. I'm surprised it took him all these years to write it but it must have been difficult to get right. It's a great song and everytime I hear it (probably 20 times already) it mezmerizes me. Seeing him next month, can't wait
Beautiful
Wonderful music
You’ve written a very powerful song. I hope it will help save lives, like your brother and my 17-year-old son. 🥀
Elegy of the Year

Budda: The emptiness, Ohh the emptiness.
Oh gosh.
If you don't know this John had a brother that killed himself. Like "Adios to California" & many other songs are about his life. It's very personal and very sad if you know about his life.
This is Marc Knopfler Music quality ...
21 years old.
Hurts me.
Lost a sister to suicide 2 years ago. Tough song. Doesn’t get easier.
I had a friend,John was his name, committed suicide in Las Vegas a few years ago. His brother wouldn't givee details or the reason, only text me a sarcastic comment.
Chicken skin music
no me convence
Horrible record I would like the time back I spent listening to it
