Great video and spot on. Car manufacturers spend years designing, engineering, and fine-tuning a vehicle. There are good reasons, for example, Toyota engineers didn't think it's a good idea to build a 4Runner that's 74" tall (instead of the 71.5" stock height) or have the stock wheels move out by 2" for a "more aggressive stance." I lucky to have a Toyota LandCruiser 78 series and it Didn't need anything added to it to access the remote parts of Australia it had a 1100 kg payload from factory and 180 litres of fuel tank capacity, but the number of these vehicles that are overloaded with unnecessary accessories is worrying.

Edward Bernays "Propaganda" is a must read. . Written in 1928 but so relevant today in understanding the world, and more specifically the country we live in. Great stuff as always brother.
Love it.. yes, I agree the overland culture is quite toxic. As a kid I grew up camping throughout California. We had stock Landcruisers and a few AMC Eagle wagons. Now I roll two stock 5th gen 4runners that I’ve put over 350k combined miles on without a single modification. I do a lot of trout fishing in the Eastern Sierra. Over the last decade I’ve had a handful of people tell me my stock rig will get stuck or not make it to my destination. Some of the trails I was “warned” about don’t even need 4wd to be used. I just laugh to myself and continue on my merry way.
Great video! Save your money for things that really matter. Here’s my question for you, are bull bars necessary on the GX 460, or any over-landing vehicle for that matter, since most of them are all light duty vehicles? Or are bull bars/ bumper deletes all essentially just ego stroking regardless of manufacturer/ maker in an offroad setting
@dzonin.8403 NO. I would NEVER add a steel bumper again The goal is to increase approach angle. Simply cutting the bumper and adding edge-trim accomplishes that goal. Our silly bumper added like 200lbs and is Chinese garbage qualitywise... we'd simply cut the OEM next time.... IF for some reason you are in deer/moose/elk country it could protect from an animal hit... but otherwise it's just added Chineseium weight
I think this craziness with bull bars started with the aussie channels. Over there, indeed they have a problem hitting kangaroo's . Unless you drive some place where hitting animals happens very often, you just add useless weight to your car. They do 0 to improve your off-road ability. If you need the lift or tow points, there are other ways to do that.
The only thing I would do if I had the money for it is portals. Other than that even without a bumper cut I managed to get by in big bear with no problem for my first outing with the gx460
I don't want to defend those people, but those UCAs make up for the down travel you lose when lifting your IFS. I did a mild 1.5" lift when replacing my old worn out suspension, and lost about that much in down travel when I measured before & after. I then replaced my factory UCAs because they were also worn out and the aftermarket gave me an extra inch of down travel, which brought me back to where I was with factory suspension. It certainly helps to get all the down travel you can get when in off-camber situations.
@ again how often do you really use or need it I think anything under 2 inches the OEM uca’s are fine otherwise your just blowing money on something unnecessary.
zomg.. don't get me started on upper control arm blingery... literally the least important suspension conponent... I wonder if they realize the entire vehicle sits on the _lower_ control arm 😆... but hey, it's painted metallic red wirh silver flakes so...
@@iheartgs400 In my case, it made a tremendous difference while rock crawling in off-camber situations. It gave me the down travel that I lost when I lifted my IFS. For stock vehicles, or glampers, I will agree that UCAs are a waste.
I stopped being friends with a guy I have known for decades because I'm doing the very bare minimum of modifications to my FJC. He kept texting and having discussions about "go with these guys because they're an American company". Or you need to use that company to lift your rig. I got so tired of his BS. I called his gladiator Queen Costco. We haven't spoken for eight months now. Anyway, thank you for bringing this up. It never bothered me when people asked why I try to keep it as stock as possible. But every once in a while, I do get annoyed. Thank you. 👊🏽
we pass lifted gladiators on trails all the time, their wheelbase is horrible... a GX/4runner has a shorter wheelbase and your FJC has an even _shorter_ wheelbase... your keyboard-offroader friend is rambling about things he doesn't understand. Maker aside, the cardinal angles are what matters the most offroad... approach, breakover, departure... 2 door wrangler is obviously the best, and the FJC is literally the second best (wish they made them still), there is a 2 door Landcruiser Prado/GX460 in Columbia called the Landcruiser Prado Sumo with w short FJC wheelbase. The Gladiator is a limousine in comparison to your FJC which is why your pal is rambling about lifts... your FJC literally has the best breakover angle of any toyota made in like the last 60 years... explaining that our GX460 has a _shorter_ wheelbase than a 4 door Rubicon is always amusing ... and I don't think we've ever seen a Gladiator on a black-diamond trail locally due to that long wheelbase
I'm new to the whole off-roading/overlanding world and I'm already using a lot of those words. I know they may seem cringe to some but you can't fault the marketing geniuses who know how to tap into a "guy's" psyche.
I keep thinking I need a 4Runner in SoCal (I have a 2018 Outback) but I see people who live in very rough road areas of the world and they get by just fine with their families in a daewoo Lanos

2 things (among about 1,017), that 'people' do (not limited to vehicles) that I find annoying AF. 1). Whatever it is that people do, that causes their vehicle to be obnoxiously LOUD. Good neighborhoods, with affluent people are quiet. It TENDS to be (but, not "always", that poor and/or trashy people are always in, "LOOK AT ME!"/SUPER LOUD mode. 2). Those ridiculous North Korean prison camp LED spotlights newer vehicles have, which blind EVERYONE on the road. If you have that much trouble seeing at night (with halogen lights......or halogen high beams), then, you should NOT be driving. DMV should confiscate your license........TWO-DAYE! See, those two things negatively affect A LOT of other people. YOUR (the collective "YOU") lifted 4WD with roof baskets, boxes, winches, shovels, gas cans, etc. etc. etc.? You can spend $100,000 on the vehicle and another $100,000 on a "build" and IDGAF. Does not affect me in ANY way. YOU can fill YOUR truck up with dirty pennies, bury it in sand, and only drive it 3 days per year for all I care. And, while YOU'RE at it, I ENCOURAGE you to only change your oil every 107,000 miles. Again, zero effect on me.......and I don't 'get' why anyone else gives a damn about the next person's, "pavement princess". And, it SHOULD be super obvious that the U.S. has become SOOOO "gynocentric" in the last 30 some years that, YES, the cubicle dwelling paper pushing office drone who spends his nights following his emasculating wife who's the size of a side by side refrigerator (with a face like Shaquille O'Neal.......but not as cute), around the grocery store, asking his second mommy, "Can we get the Oreos?" SHOULD have SOMETHING in his life (that requires little effort), that makes him FEEL masculine.......and dream of weekend adventures on the Rubicon Trail........when in reality, his second mommy gives him his list of chores EVERY weekend........and he damned well BETTER do them, if he wants his monthly missionary session and a pot roast.........on his birthday.
I agree. The most important ingredient of offroading/over landing is just getting out there. Stock GX can do 90% the of trails that some glamorized & SPONSORED youtubers are driving through. Truthfully though, gear flexing is also important because we're huMEN.😂

@strider1-140 they never seem to understand that GVW or payload rating do they? 😞 The desire for "the look" (wedding dress for men) outweighs adherence to personal and community saftey
My Tacoma build came with bright red painted shocks from the factory. It looks good on the rig. Gives it a nice, aggressive, look. So when I was configuring my build, I took off the basic black front tow hooks and I did a build by painting them with some red spray paint to give it a little better stance. Now the shocks match the tow hooks. Just working though my mods slowly to get the truck ready for some gravel parking lots.

If going out in the woods with your vehicle is your hobby why not spend money making it better? Better ground clearance and water fording capability is never a bad idea. I do hate the idea of pavement princess trucks posing as overlanders but if I'm going out in the woods with my truck you bet im going to fit the biggest tires I can fit, a winch and some armor
Generally...agree, but I know people who do this stuff in an $8k used SUV and think spending $30k-$50k on a luxury Lexus is just as foolish as all this stuff people bolt on their vehicles. So anyone can criticize anyone. The stock ride in my truck was so bad my wife would rather stay home. Bigger tires and good shocks made the ride bearable for her which makes it more fun for me. The difference is significant. It's the difference between going or staying home. I could care less what anyone else is doing nor does it bother me.
Jeeze, calm down a notch. How did you get so butt-hurt over other peoples hobbies?? Of course there are countless examples of bad modifications, but there are also countless examples of options that make someones vehicle fit what they want it to be. How about using all of your knowledge and insight to build up a community instead of tearing it down. Just a thought brother.
No. I have already explained that the "community" is TOXIC with unnecessary "gear" and is deterring people from entering overlanding. The "gear" is mostly unnecessary and that is the positive message of this series.
Agreed. It’s amusing that I’m often asked why I haven’t done more to my Bronco. Well I haven’t found its limits yet stock (well I did get stuck in deep ruts to the frame. So a minor lift may have helped. Better advice: go with a friend who can pull you out!)
"Lets make a video about a problem that doesnt exist" Who gives a damn if people want to "build" their jeep or tacoma, why does it matter to anyone else. Its funny that you say people that you hop on the bandwagon of hating on other people for their rigs for views while accusing them of following "trends" and being caught by keywords... just get out and do what you enjoy and quit throwing stones at people for enjoying things in a different way.
@BrandonWatkins614 it's not a feel-good video, it's a reality-check.... repeatedly it is stated that this is not about "your freedom to do whatever you want", rather this is guiding the neophyte who thinks they need to "build" their 4x4 to accomplish the most common US overlandingnl trails/situations. @olliechristopher467 understanding payloads would require math and science so no... they prolly won't consider overloading so long as it "loox kewel"
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD😂😂😂
Contemplating building a footlong meatball rig right now.
I lucky to have a Toyota LandCruiser 78 series and it Didn't need anything added to it to access the remote parts of Australia it had a 1100 kg payload from factory and 180 litres of fuel tank capacity, but the number of these vehicles that are overloaded with unnecessary accessories is worrying.

Edward Bernays "Propaganda" is a must read. . Written in 1928 but so relevant today in understanding the world, and more specifically the country we live in. Great stuff as always brother.
Yes, excellent book! I like this channel educating and being educated!
Love it.. yes, I agree the overland culture is quite toxic.
@joey1957 "toxic" is a perfect word to describe "the community"... ❤️ ✌️
I think one of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagons comes stock with portals from the factory... look it up 😃
Just make sure you get the portals where the brakes don’t fall off!

@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I'm running Little Caesars and 2% milk
Another big beef I have with the Overlanding community is UCA ppl in GXOR community always pushes the idea you need to replace x, y, z and put UCA’s.
Thank you. 👊🏽
Honestly not much is really needed with the 120 J Series GX/4Runner/FJ just min lift and ATT and thats it.
we pass lifted gladiators on trails all the time, their wheelbase is horrible... a GX/4runner has a shorter wheelbase and your FJC has an even _shorter_ wheelbase... your keyboard-offroader friend is rambling about things he doesn't understand.
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I'm going to look for the Land Cruiser Prado Sumo. Thank you, sir. 👊🏽

I'm new to the whole off-roading/overlanding world and I'm already using a lot of those words. I know they may seem cringe to some but you can't fault the marketing geniuses who know how to tap into a "guy's" psyche.
@TheFamilyCruiser250 yep... can't knock the brilliance of the marketing... example: the new GX550 and LX700h "Overtrail" trims 😉

Get the bro you described a prescription for testosterone and a gym membership
I agree. The most important ingredient of offroading/over landing is just getting out there. Stock GX can do 90% the of trails that some glamorized & SPONSORED youtubers are driving through. Truthfully though, gear flexing is also important because we're huMEN.😂

Darn it I even have air-conditioning and heating with zero breeze three. Let’s see how much my payload is gonna be.
I call it overloading not overlanding.
Overlanding puke is good for business. 😊

"Lets make a video about a problem that doesnt exist"
Who gives a damn if people want to "build" their jeep or tacoma, why does it matter to anyone else.
